Hump Day Giveaway: Creating the Ultimate Running Playlist

March 24, 2010
by

Up for grabs: Accessories-O-Rama!

I’m not delusional enough to think my music tastes are current; my last adult CD I purchased was, I’m pretty sure, The Rising by Bruce Springsteen. (The last kids one? Not Naptime by Justin Roberts. I love his voice.) I could chalk my lameness up to everything going digital and download-able, but the truth is, I’m a little lost in iTunes land. Unable to make a decision based on 20-second sound bites, I gravitate towards the same artists (Counting Crows, Lyle Lovett, Dixie Chicks, Indigo Girls) that I’ve known since, oh, about 1989.

So I was thrilled when SBS recently mailed me two homemade CDs labeled, simply, Fast Tracks I and Fast Tracks II. Right now, I replay Britney’s “Piece of Me” about four times before I move to the next song. Then I bob along to the other tracks that have remarkably similar lyrics that go something like, “I wanna get wich chew.” (For the whole list, see this note on our Facebook page.)

Still, I need more variety. And I bet you do too, if you run with tunes. So the contest for today is simply this: what’s the best, most motivating song you like to run to? Sorry: “Eye of the Tiger”, “Tonight’s Gonna Be A Good Night”, Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”, and “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond are out. Got ’em already. But don’t think you have to be all hip and 2010: if the melody is not available in a Muzak version you typically hear strolling the aisles of a supermarket, we’ll take it.

Let us know by noon Thursday and you could win a RLAM accessory kit: the signature cotton tee; a very cool, limited edition RLAM Headsweats visor; Bridgedale Bamboo Lo ultra-cushy socks; a Hydrapak Purebot EA-free water bottle; four flavors of Fruition, a favorite of kids and moms alike; a roll of KT Tape, good for supporting weak joints; and, last but not least, a RLAM bumper sticker. (And by bumper sticker I mean,  the only way a car behind you can read it is if your bumpers touch. Better call: stuck on a water bottle or in an inspirational place.)

And the best part? We all win! When the contest closes, I’ll compile the ultimate RLAM playlist, and post it on our Facebook page.

So what chew got, Mix Master Mommas?

I like “Golden” by Jill Scott. I helps get me moving on speed work days.

  4. March 24, 2010 6:27 am

I’m partial to 80s hair bands for good running music – Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” are two favorites. Of course I will never admit to listening to this music at any other time. 🙂

I have quite a few, but my “go to” song, especially up hills is, Depeche Mode’s “World in My Eyes (Cicada Mix).” Great, fast beat.

  6. March 24, 2010 6:45 am

I am Old Skool! For a warm up I like September (Earth Wind & Fire), and for filler songs I like My Baby Daddy, I’m Coming Up, Nasty Girl remix w/128 BPM, Pump Up the Jams, and I Think We’re Alone Now remix. I don’t listen to any of these other than on my MP3 running play list, by the way 🙂

“Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N Roses always puts a huge smile on my face and gets my speed gear going! When tired and digging deep within yourself – “Its a Beautiful Day” by U2 is also very motivating.

“Come On Girl” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The guitar and bass lines float along during the verses, propelling you forward, and the chorus drives harder on the drums — like they’re screaming, “Double time it, baby, I dare ya!” Perfect for a mini-interval set in the middle of a longer run.

    • megmelinda permalink
      March 24, 2010 6:54 am

(bonus: “come on girl let’s get it right…” over and over in your head is not a bad motivator, either.)

Lose Yourself is one of my absolute favorites! Never would I have thought I’d like an Eninmen song.

  11. March 24, 2010 6:58 am

“Bhangra Fever” by Midival Punditz…it’s awesome! It has this rhythmic motion for mid-run, when I am just in the zone, baby! I actually listened to it several times during the last few miles of the New Orleans Half because it was motivating for me and kept my cadence at a good clip…I wasn’t counting my steps, though 😉

Anywho, ITunes is really fun to explore when you just type in the style of music you like. I like a lot of drums, almost tribal sounds. I really like some of L’il Wayne’s stuff…def not for the kiddos…he has a serious case of potty mouth. Stuntin’ Like My Daddy is good.

Lastly, I really like Jason Mraz – the Remedy, in particular.

    Fun post!

    Jump – Pointer Sisters
    3 – Britney Spears
Your Love is My Drug – Ke$ha

I couldn’t decide, they all make me happy when they come up on the iPod!

  16. March 24, 2010 7:31 am

Oh gosh, where to start? I’m loving “How you like me now?” by The Heavy (good album all around)!

  17. March 24, 2010 7:40 am

I really like Pink “So What” is a fun one, but also “Funhouse”. OK, so really her whole Funhouse CD.

I also love GO Fish Guys, yes a kids CD but my kids and I dance around the house to it. So two of their songs are on my race list because I picture my kids. And on longer races I have the songs my husband wrote each one of our kids on my play litst. Bonus to being married to a talented man with a recording studio. Sappy I know, but it always makes me smile.

That’s about as current as my playlist get’s. Otherwise it’s 60-70-80’s. CSN, little river band, lots of Queen, elton, heart, etc

I am also Itunes challenged. It has taken me months to spend an itunes gift card. I just can’t make up my mind! But I did buy Kelly Clarkson’s latest cd last year and I used to play “My Life Would Suck Without You” on repeat while doing speed workouts on my tm. While running the Vancouver Half marathon last May, that song came on my ipod and I ended up repeating it 5 times during the last few km’s of the race. That song really makes my feet move!

    Rockstar by Nickleback

    Bad Romance – Lady Gaga

  29. March 24, 2010 9:02 am

Anything by Toby Mac but especially Gone or Stories from Welcome to Diverse City. I just went out and bought his two most recent CDs so I’d have more Toby Mac variety to run to. Also, Fly on the Wall or See You Again by Miley Cyrus. (Stop laughing!)

  30. March 24, 2010 9:05 am

My current fave is and old country song called “I’m in a Hurry” by Alabama. It has a nice rhythm and the words are perfect!

I find that for long runs I really like the rhythm of country music. That may be cause I am a country fan at heart, but that country two-step rhythm is a great motivator!

I Love that tee and visor, thanks for the chance to win such a great prize pack!

  31. March 24, 2010 9:07 am

I like to warm up to “Free Falling” by Tom Petty.

LOVE the shirt and Headsweats hat!

  32. March 24, 2010 9:08 am

Brick By Boring Brick by Paramore or pretty much any Paramore song. 🙂

  33. March 24, 2010 9:13 am

So many of the above-listed are already on my iPod. I try to make a new mix every month to keep from going stir crazy. Usually anything by the Black Eyed Peas, All American Rejects, Cake, Muse or a local Pittsburgh band called The Clarks.

The Clarks did a cover of Louie Armstrong’s Wonderful World for a Pittsburgh Penguins’ team commercial. I’m a huge hockey fan and any time it comes up I see Sidney Crosby hoisting the Stanley Cup and get so pumped to run fast, or jump up and down like a school girl as I did last June when they won.

Uprising by Muse is great. ESPN played it often during college football season so the song makes me feel like it’s a football Saturday. Adrenaline rush!

Current fave, however, is Short Skirt, Long Jacket by Cake. It’s the theme to NBC’s Chuck and hearing it lets me imagine I’m on a mission with Zachery Levi ;).

I am a BIG fan of “Run this Town” or maybe it is not called that. LOL!! I have not updated my Ipod since May of 09, OOPS!! I had my Blog friends send me CD’s so I can update before the Eugene Marathon. Pretty sure new tunes will help me to that coveted BQ. I’m not getting my RLM e-mail feeds anymore. Hmm….

My “long run” playlist is nearly four hours long now. Here are a few of my recent faves:

Party in the U.S.A., Miley Cyrus (in my defense, I have two girls, ages 4 and 6)
Tik Tok, K$sha (really hate that dollar sign in her name!)
    Untouched, The Veronicas
    Evacuate the Dancefloor, Cascade
    Hey Ya!, Andre 3000
Mr. Brightside, The Killers (no idea why but this song always makes me feel like a runner)
    Sweet Home Alabama, Lynyrd Skinner
    Hot N Cold, Kate Perry,
    Bitch, Meredith Brooks

Love this idea, BTW. My long run playlist could always use some new life. Plus, it needs to be longer since I start training for my first marathon in June!

Warning I’m showing my age here, this is not current, it’s totally last century:

Fat Boy Slim: Right Here Right Now

During the Olympics, every time the Dayquil commercial featuring Apolo Anton Ohno ripping off his pajama top to reveal his uniform underneath came on, I got a little bit of a tingle up my spine. I think it had as much to do with the background music as it did Apolo Ohno ripping off his shirt. I did a little googling to find out if it was a real song and sure enough, it is. “On My Way” by Billy Boy on Poison is now my new favorite running song. 😉

Thanks for this contest! Everyone can use a few good running song suggestions. I would suggest anything by Vampire Weekend. They have two cds, (both fabulous) and it almost seems their music was made for running. They combine a ton of different influences (but mainly AfroPop) to create a really unique and refreshing pop music. They are quite trendy now, and with good reason.
Put in either album (or both) and head out for a long run. You’ll love it! To pick just one of their songs is difficult, but I’d say APunk first place and Run at a close second. Enjoy!

Don’t Wanna Lose You (Whatever You Want) by Black Violin. It is not peppiest tempo but it is great for my long run pace, and I play it over and over again at the end to stay on target and as a little anthem from my brain to my body.

  65. March 24, 2010 1:38 pm

OMG! Total mix of new and old for me.
On my fast list all the time is
“Too Legit to Quit” MC Hammer (can’t beat that!)
“Memories Remain” Dropkick Murphys (who am I kidding… anything Dropkick Murphy’s will do just fine)
    “Super Freak” Rick James
    “La Grange” ZZ Top
“I’m Too Sexy” Right Said Fred
    “Pump It” Black Eyed Peas
    and
    “Rockstar” by Nickelback
My favorite song right now is “I Run To You” by Lady Antebellum

    Lovin the RLAM swag~

OK~first off *WARNING* let me say that lyrics in these songs are *not* the best choice for young ears~and you might want to look for clean versions even for yourself. Although I am a 42 year old boring midwestern mom, XM radio’s 20 on 20 has inspired a somewhat younger (and naughtier!) musical version of me. Here are my latest favorites~

Praise You-Fatboy Slim (good warm up)
I Made it (Cash Money Heroes) -Kevin Rudolph featuring Birdman, Jay Sean and Lil Wayne
What You Got-Colby O’Donis featuring Akon
Morning After Dark-Timbaland feat. Nelly and So Shy
    Shut it Down-Pitbull feat. Akon
Feel It- Three 6 Mafia with Sean Kingston and Flo Rida
Shooting Star- LMFAO, Pitbull and Kevin Rudolf
Break your Heart- Taio Cruz feat. Ludacris
I Can Transform Ya- Chris Brown feat. Lil Wayne
Sexy Chick- David Guetta feat. Akon
    #1-Nelly

Well, this may sound like I’m ancient or something. I like to run to music with no words. Vivaldi is always great for running. I don’t like anything in 3/4 time though. That makes me want to waltz. The best ones are theme songs like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I even have the Olympics them song and fanfare. When I was practicing to sing in a production of Messiah, I downloaded it and learned as I ran. I also have hip-hop playlists and southern rock, but I always come back to my music only playlist.

All of the above are good!! One song that motivates me on a LONG run is “King of Pain” by The Police. One of my favorite runners, Dean Karnazes, has it on his play list and that guy can run, a lot! So I figure, if that guy can run 350 miles, I can go ONE more mile.

Okay I don’t usually listen to music like this, but I got to go to the Rose Bowl (GO DUCKS!) this year. While we were in the stands they played this video and as the music played my husband and both said this song would be great to run to. My husband wrote down some of the lyrics and came home and found http://www.averywatts.com the song is “this is what it looks like to be the best” I love this song and it totally makes me run harder.

    Hi ladies,
You can’t beat the following songs to pump you up when you need some speed:
Shipping Off to Boston – Dropkick Murphys
Rockstar – Nickelback (and pretty much anything else they play, but I was too embarassed to choose “Somthing In Your Mouth”!)
Know Your Enemy – Green Day
Supermassive Black Hole – Muse (along with any GN&R song – it’s a great way to pump you up in the car on the way to a race!)
Shady Esperanto and the Young Hearts – Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers (weird name, great song, great band!)
One Week – Bare Naked Ladies (and if we are going old school – pretty much any BNL song!)
    and finally…
Cracklin’ Rosie by none other than Neil Diamond himself…
Love the contest – love all the ideas. Will definitely be making some new playlists based on this – thanks Ladies!!

I’m in absloute awe that no one has suggested “Mama Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J! I love, love, love that song!

My PowerSong Playlist that I use for running hills and doing speedwork is:

Mama Said Knock You Out – LL Cool J
Push IT – Salt N Pepa
    Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
Here We Go Again – Joey McIntyre (I’m a big NKOTB fan!)
    Lose Yourself – Eminem
Party in the USA – Miley Cyrus

I love that I’m not the only who’s admitting to being a Miley Cyrus fan 🙂 I guess our kids really do rub off on us, though I will never admit to screaming “There’s a Bubble on my Snuffle” in the midst of a long run because it accidentally found it’s way onto my running playlist….

I’m late, but I’ll share anyway. My two new favorites are Unwritten by Natasha Beddingfield (I’m in THAT stage of life..wait I’m ALWAYS in that stage of life) and I Run for Life by Melissa Ethridge. Both are outside of my ‘normal’ taste in music.. particularly workout music (I’m more a hiphop/rap kinda girl), but I heard these during a spin class and found them highly motivational!

Looking forward to the RLAM list!

A close second would be ‘Til I Collapse’ by Eminem.

I love rhythmic, repeative running songs to keep me going on my long runs.
