Hump Day Giveaway: Skirting the Issue

August 4, 2010
by

A showdown at the starting line.

You either do or you don’t. Or you’ll try it or you won’t. I’m not talking about going vegan, getting a Brazilian, teaching your infant sign language or any other slightly divisive topic.

I’m talking about a much more serious subject: running skirts.

As much as I cringe to admit this, I notice what others wear, especially when it comes to running. I’m human–and female–after all. I notice who matches their running outfits, who tries to slide into the crowd by wearing a race tee and black shorts, who is bold enough to go with just a sports bra, who wears bun huggers. Unless there’s a glaring fashion don’t–a sports bra that is not doing its job or buns that are falling out of their huggers–I pretty much use my observations for research, not judgment, noting what companies are well represented, what styles are cute, what trends I should follow (or not).

And I, like anybody who has been on a race course in the past few years, have noticed that skirts are big. We spread the gospel of skirts pretty loudly in RLAM: they don’t create that unfortunate crotch-bulge;  they’re much more universally flattering than shorts; they remind you not to take yourself too seriously. I wear them exclusively while spreading the RLAM love during book events, but I’m not ready to give away any of my shorts. These days, my running feels serious, and most days, I’m not in a fun, flirty mood when I head out. I’m in shorts, and I’m all business.

I may be in the minority because I equally embrace both shorts and skirts. Monica, who interviews the running world’s movers and shakers for her blog, regularly asks the question “Running skirt: friend or foe?”and the answers are solidly yes or no.

Kara Goucher answered this: I have to admit this to everyone. I modeled one for a Nike catalog in 2007 and I really liked the skirt. I wore it a lot, even in the Olympic village! I got a lot of compliments on it. But I could never wear it for a hard serious workout, I just couldn’t.

Writer Liz Robbins said this: When I run, I want to wear shorts. When I play tennis, I wear skirts. When I played lacrosse and field hockey, I wore tartan plaid polyester skirts. Enough said.

Writer Rachel Toor simply proclaimed: BFF.

According to Skirt Sports, you can save the world in this skirt. Seems possible.

Where do you fall in the skirt debate? Does it add to your run or subtract from your seriousness? Have you tried one or will you never? Do you own more than you can count? Let us know and a random winner will take home–huge surprise here–a Gym Girl Ultra from Skirt Sports, the company that got this whole flippy party started six years ago. The GGU, their most popular style that is available from XS to XXL, has a modest length, shorts underneath and two pockets–one on either leg–for music, gel, keys and other essentials. Promise, regardless of your skirt stance, you’ll smile just putting it on. (If you win and you’re firmly anti-skirt, you may convert. Or you’ll make one of your running buddies very, very happy.)

So do you skirt? Why or why not?

P.S. Winners of this giveaway and last week’s running allowance one about budgeting in running in tough times–a $100 Asics certificate–will be announced on Friday. Promise.

I LOVE the skirts, without actually wearing one running yet! They’re pretty new here in Australia, and mostly worn for tennis or netball. But I’m using a cute, patterned one I saw online as my motivation/reward for continuing to run through the rest of winter. As soon as the weather warms up, I’m going to get out in my (new!) running skirt and convert all the other Aussie’s. 🙂

  2. August 4, 2010 3:27 am

i don’t skirt because they are hard to find at a good price here in Aus. I do have a couple of running dresses I made. I like that they aren’t a short skirt and give some modesty, and for those long treks/trail runs are great for when nature calls.
I have just started looking into running skirts as it would allow a little bit more mix and match. And I just like the way they flick and feel as you run (the dresses, not the skirts but I am sure a skirt would feel the same)

I love the short/skirt combo (shorts underneath with skirt on top – one piece). I feel feminine and feel that it is more flattering to the figure (hides more lumps and bumps). But I must confess that I wear shorts more because I prefer to not shock those around me with my white legs.

I love skirts! I think they’re more flattering and feminine than shorts on most body shapes. I’m dead keen to express my Scottish heritage by running in a kilt! http://www.sportkilt.com/

I’m a new runner. I’ve been slogging through the PA heat and humitity trying to find my legs. I’m making progress but its been slow. My typical running outfit has been gym shorts and old tee-shirts. I figured I’d don a “real runner’s outfit” when I had accumulated a respectable running route. Enter into the picture my two little girls who are forever playing dress up. I overheard my youngest exclaim to her sister “you’ll never have a bad day wearing a pretty gown.” That afternoon I bought my first real running outfit – a skirt and a tank. And, holy princesses, Batman! She was right! My next run was great. The heat and humitity didn’t bother me as much and my legs felt stronger. I’m all for the skirt – a shift in attitude does wonders for new runners!

Where in PA are you running? I’m in NEPA, and new to running, too.

I will admit that up until this year I never thought I would evern try on a running skirt. I mean, come on; I’m an athlete. I’m a runner. I am way to serious to try to think I should look cute whilst running my ass off!!! That is until I stopped taking myself so darn serious! I can still compete and wear a skirt darnit! I belong to a running club and the skirt is gaining popularity among the group. I overheard there was a sale near by and after practice ( I was a sweaty, stinky mess) I went and bought the LAST one. I wore it the next day on a solo run ( early morning so nobody could see me) and I fell in love. I have yet to buy another one, but I will. I have worn it once to race in and every time I wear it I can’t help but to feel cute- I don’t mind looking cute as I pass abunch of people either- it makes me feel powerful-even more so in a skirt for some reason! 🙂
    Yes to the running skirt!!!

I have never been able to find shorts that work for me, no matter how many I try on. So I always ran in pants or capris until I bought my first skirt (yeah Skirt Sports) and now I have 3 (2 short and 1 with capris underneath). Such a life saver for me in this warm weather!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my skirts!! I prefer to wear skirts rather than shorts. Maybe its the girlie girl in me. In a skirt – I can get my workout in and then go straight to running my kids around, doing errands, etc without having to worry about changing. I may still have that haggard, post-exercise look but at least I have a cute skirt on;).

  9. August 4, 2010 4:37 am

Love the skirt! Finally an alternative to my gazillion pairs of Nike running shorts. So much more flattering. So cute. Feminine. Fun. So for all of those reasons I think it adds to my run. I’ve never felt like it takes away from my seriousness as a runner. Yes. I’m a skirt friend.

I have never worn a running skirt. It is just not me. I play tennis also and I don’t even wear a skirt for that sport. I am much more comfortable in shorts. Maybe I am just traditional (old fashion) and not a hip running Mamma. If I won one, I would be winning to try it out.

Love my running skirts! I guess after I got married and had kids I stopped spending money on trendy, fashionable “going out” clothing. The running skirt has allowed me to indulge in clothing again while being somewhat fashionable while I run. I love being able to look cute while I run my long run. Comfort is another bonus. I do still wear shorts a lot, but on days when I’m up with a teething baby, haven’t had my hair cut in months, and my nails look like I took up chewing them, the skirt lets me feel fun and flirty!

  14. August 4, 2010 4:55 am

I have one running skirt – and it has a frill around it! I ran my first half wearing it and loved it! I have three sons, so I try to be as girlie girl as I can possibly be. I always wear capris under it because my legs are nothing pretty to look at – but I love having a skirt on. I’m training for my first marathon and always wear something pink when I run – whether it be a shirt, socks, hat, whatever. I’m all girl and proud of it!

I love the idea of a skirt, but haven’t bought or tried one on yet. I’m tricky with sizes. I have a very large butt attached to a very small waist. Often there’s not enough fabric in shorts and pants to go all the way over my butt, or if there is, the waist is huge on me. To give you an idea, I wear size 6 tops and size 14 bottoms.

So I’m reluctant to buy without trying them on, and the stores I’ve checked near me don’t carry them or carry only one of the super short ones.

Would love to try one on!

    • August 4, 2010 5:02 pm

I’ve got major curves too–11 inch difference between my waist and hips!–and find that running skirts are SUPER flattering on me. They are always stretchy so seem to accommodate both waist and hips! Try them! 🙂

  18. August 4, 2010 5:05 am

love.love.love the skirts to run in. maybe because i am not a serious runner :), so i can still afford to try to look cute when i run, simply because i do not run nearly like you, or many of your followers…just getting started again. 🙂 i just “found” this blog, this week…but love the inspiration it affords me. 🙂 happy trails. melissa.

I am converting to skirts from shorts. I ran my first race in one in May and loved it. I did not have the need to pull at something or fix something during the race and it was great. I still wear shorts on training runs on most days. I save my skirts for the long runs and when I don’t feel like running. They seem to give me a little extra something early in the morning!

  20. August 4, 2010 5:12 am

I am a running skirt devotee, it just makes me feel like I’m having fun! Plus, I love what Kelly said about spending money on yourself, I realized I spend money on running skirts and little on clothes, which is fine with me! Hooray for the running skirt!

I think running skirts are just about the best invention ever — but ironically, I never wear skirts in my regular life, I just love the running skirt. I guess because I can wear them with running shoes — if I could wear other skirts with sneakers I’d probably wear them more often too.

  22. August 4, 2010 5:20 am

LOVE skirts… but, sadly, have only worn one once. The trouble is I just don’t feel like I can justify how pricey they are. I bought and wore one once from a Nike outlet store. (It was $13! Even I couldn’t argue with that price!) It was purple and adorable and, sadly, too big. I had to roll the waist band over to make it work. Not a terribly attractive addition to my waist. They only had Med & Lg sizes and running has moved me very solidly in the Sm zone… which is great but not if you’re looking for running skirts. (Whenever I see them anywhere I check them out and I’ve noticed that there’s hardly any size smalls available. Makes sense that they would run out first… but also seems like the store managers would figure this out and order more smalls…)

So, put me in the “yes to skirts” category, even though I can’t claim to have a lot of first hand experience with them. You’ll see me in the same running shorts I’ve had since the Clinton Administration.

P.S. The friend I gave the Med running skirt to LOVES it… so at least there’s that!

Phoebe–check Target if you have one near you. They carry a C9 by Champion running skirt that is inexpensive (under $20) AND runs small/short. I bought the small–my usual size since losing some weight last spring–and it is REALLY small!

I dabbled in skirt wearing while living in Colorado but frankly, most days it was too cold to wear one. Now that I’m living on the sun, er south Florida, skirts are ALL I wear. With spanks, no shorts. And they are the only way I can survive the heat of this place!

I would love to go ahead and order a skirt (and I will someday) but the brokerage and shipping to Canada just about killed me. Ended up being almost 2x the cost of the product!!! 🙂

I never thought I’d be the running skirt “type,” as I generally don’t care much what I look like when I run. However, one of my friends convinced me to try one and now I love them. I’d say my runs are split evenly between skirts and shorts these days. I’ve learned that I don’t like the wet diaper feel of the compression shorts in my skirts when it’s very hot/humid and I’m sweating a lot. So for my long runs and hot days, I wear shorts and on other runs I wear skirts.

    • August 4, 2010 5:06 pm

This Skirt Sports one they are giving away should be perfect for you. I have one, and it is longer, a bit “larger” (the skirt is more A-line than tight/narrow/athletic), and seems more modest to me than some of my other running skirts. You’d love it.

  33. August 4, 2010 5:32 am

I’ve always loved skirts for whatever activity. When I was 10 I think the only pants that I owned were the snow pants my mom made me wear over my skirts to walk to school in Minnesota winters.

I bought my first running skirt from bornfit while pregnant last summer and loved feeling cute while running (it worked really well postpartum too when none of my other running stuff fit). Now I think I’m just going to go skirt for warm weather runs (but will definitely not wear them under snow pants for winter runs).

I wear a skirt every time I run. I don’t even bother trying to buy shorts anymore- they just aren’t comfortable. When I’m wearing it I’m really not concerned how “serious” I look, I guess I just don’t care whether or not someone else takes me seriously or not because of what I’m running in. All I care about about is my comfort.

I’d love to try a skirt – the women I see running in them usually look so powerful and feminine and strong all at once. I love that. BUT – I wear a fuel belt on long runs, and every now and then you see someone running in a skirt with a fuel belt, and her skirt has ridden up and bunched up over her bum so the spankies are exposed and THAT terrifies me, because I don’t want to be running along with my rear hanging out without knowing it. So….I haven’t tried one yet, but I love the look (when it works).

    • Kate permalink
      August 4, 2010 7:39 am

Skirts and fuel belts require compromise – when I wear tights in the winter I can have the fuel belt low on the hips. With the skirt I wear it at my waist – no bunching up issues.

  38. August 4, 2010 5:48 am

I bought one of the SkirtSports skirts several years ago at the Minnie 15k expo – a girlfriend and I each got one. She looked way better in hers than I did (maybe I’m just seeing it through the eyes of someone who had to wear a uniform skirt for 6 years in school). I kept meaning to wear it, even taking it on trips with me but never having the guts. In my recent household move, it appears to have vanished. I’d love another opportunity to try it out……my current go-to, which always makes me feel like a runner (and feel like I look like a runner) are Nike Tempo track shorts. For long races, I need something with more storage and cuter than RaceReadys – maybe the Skirt folks could work on that!

  39. August 4, 2010 5:48 am

I’ve never tried one, but I totally would! I have SUPER short hair that is not very feminine (I just got tired of dealing with ponytails, etc. so WHOOSH — down to a #3 on the clippers and I’ve never looked back). Since I cut it, I have gotten a kick out of wearing SUPER-girly clothes/makeup/etc. because I like the contrast with my sort of boy-looking hair. I think a running skirt would fit into that nicely because I especially do not look very girly when I run, and there is only so much pink a girl can handle!

  40. Suzanne S. permalink
    August 4, 2010 5:52 am

Total fan, though not so much for distance running. Anything under 10 miles, I skirt it. Over 10 miles and I find that the inner-short liners get bunched up just like running shorts, so I end up fighting the skirt to pull down the liner. It’s much easier to fight the shorts (and I don’t look like a pervert).

I agree that for shorter runs, the skirt is way more comfortable and I feel more confident. I’m not exactly sure why but I love it!

  41. August 4, 2010 5:55 am

I don’t own a single running skirt but I’d definitely try one if I won. Most of my runs I am just happy to get out the door, thinking more about ‘are my shoes tied’ than whether or not I look cute but comfort is important so if the skirt works and it looks good, then why not?

  42. August 4, 2010 5:58 am

I am a skirt-a-holic. I only run in skirts. I just can’t run in shorts. But oddly enough, I crosstrain and lounge in running shorts.

  43. August 4, 2010 6:00 am

I love running skirts! I have shorts as well, but I almost always wear my running skirts instead. More comfortable and cuter, too.

  44. August 4, 2010 6:00 am

I mostly wear shorts, but love my running skirts just the same. It’s all about how I feel heading out into a run. If I feel simply fabulous, I want to flaunt it …. in a skirt.

I haven’t been wearing them most recently, because my body has changed shape with my running and increased mileage (though I haven’t necessarily lost weight) and most of my running skirts are now too big in the waist. I constantly have to pull them up when I run and my tops always ride-up. Causing a constant battle with the “mommy buldge”. I’d love to get a new addition to my runnign wordrobe! 🙂

  46. August 4, 2010 6:04 am

Love my running skirts! I have a few pairs of shorts I keep around, and I may pull ’em out when the skirts are in the wash, if I really must, but it’s skirts all the way for me. I just feel better wearing them, and I still feel as strong and athletic and serious as I ever would donning shorts — probably more so because my confidence is higher. It just is. Now my running partner on the other hand…she won’t touch them with a ten-foot pole. I tell her one of these days she might convert, but she insists no way. We have a good laugh about it.

I’ll admit I’ve never even tried a running skirt on. I would like to, but like so much else in my life, it’s just not high on the priority list right now and so it’s not happening. I don’t know, maybe I’m a tomboy at heart and that’s why I don’t wear the running skirts. It’s not that I think I’ll look like an ass in a running skirt, but I think I’ll feel less athletic (which didn’t stop me from playing field hockey and lacrosse in little plaid kilts in high school and college). When I run I like feeling the sweat pouring down my face and burn in my muscles. I feel tough, like I can take on the world (and the insanity in my house). Add the Beastie Boys or Snoop pumping in my ears and I am certain I could take down Mike Tyson. Ok, maybe not. But I guess I think if I did all that in a skirt, I might lose that invincible feeling. Like I said, I do want to try one on and give a whirl, and I will…someday.

Wearing a skirt during a race generates lots of comments – from that looks great to one woman saying to another ‘I wear skirts for tennis but not for running.’ That cracked me up because do you not run on the tennis court? If anything the risk of exposing you spankies/bloomers is higher on the court than the trail.

I started running again (sort of in earnest) about a year ago. I’m in the Army, so I’ve always had A relationship with running (either themandatory relationship, or at time a voluntary one). In recent years, it was the mandatory one. when I decided to pick up running as my social outlet (I run to get to the expo/food/drinks/girl talk afterward), I needed to pick up a few non-Army work out items. I immediately fell in love with the idea of running in a skirt — you can’t get much more opposed to the Army-mandatory-running-uniform than that! I picked up one, and ended up washing it every night. I’ve picked up a couple more since and have probably only run in shorts 4 times (yes, I can actually remember each time) since then. When my kids see me getting ready to run or returning, they see a strong active Mom, who hangs with other strong active Moms and it feels normal – at those times, I’m not the Soldier that walks through the door each evening. Serious, lazy, fun, nervous – I bring more to every workout in a skirt.

I was hesitant to try running skirts. I work in an engineering office as the only female engineer and usually try to blend in as one of the guys. Some days I’m climbing ladders or crawling down into dirty places on job sites so I never wear skirts to work. In fact, I rarely where skirts, ever, because I hate the looks they draw on the days there are no clean khakis and I don’t have a choice. “Hey, look! She has legs!” Thanks, guys, I hadn’t noticed.

When my son came along, however, I found myself embracing the tiny shred of my inner girlie girl and letting her come out to play more often. Now that I’ve tried running skirts, I don’t know if I’ll ever buy shorts again. I hate the way shorts fit, ride up, fall down, etc. I love the way the skirts fit, hide a little bit of butt that shorts don’t hide, and just feel fun! I train in them and LOVE racing in them. My running bottoms drawer contains only skirts, capri tights and long tights. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  58. August 4, 2010 6:31 am

I want to. I really do. But $62 does NOT fall into the budget. Especially when I own so many shorts.
But, I believe, given the right skirt, I could do it. I promise to try at least.

  59. August 4, 2010 6:31 am

I just wore my skirt for the first time this weekend and loved it! As I was heading out the door, our 8 yr old son asked if I was going to go running in a skirt (yes, he noticed!) since, as he put it, “you don’t even wear one to work!” When I got back, I was telling my husband that besides being cute and fun, it was super comfortable and for those reasons it made the run easier. At which point our son said, “well, then maybe you should it wear it work!” Yeah, maybe…..
I’ll buy some more and hope the novelty doesn’t wear off!

I was a tomboy growing up so the thought of wearing a skirt while running made me laugh! I did try one on though last month and my husband laughed when I came out of the dressing room and when I looked at myself I looked so silly…how can I be a serious runner in this thing? I’ll stick to my Nike Tempo shorts they work for me and make my butt look cute!

    • August 4, 2010 5:15 pm

I wonder why some women think running skirts make them look “not serious” as runners?? Is Serena Williams not a serious tennis player because she wears a skirt/dress? It’s interesting to me to read comments like this, too, because I have always actually felt the opposite–that maybe I’m not a “serious” ENOUGH runner to wear a skirt. The runners I see in skirts look, to me, to be super athletes. Maybe it’s because the skirt is often expensive and, especially when paired with a matching running tank, is so obviously “running gear” (as opposed to just running in whatever shorts and tee you have lying around). I don’t know. I wear skirts every time I run, but have often wondered if I am athletic/fit/thin/muscled/serious enough to be wearing one!

  61. August 4, 2010 6:35 am

I have one skirt and I love it, but I don’t hate shorts. I wear shorts most of the time, only because I can’t bear to pay an expensive price for a new running skirt.

After a nasty chafing incident involving my shorts, I have been almost exclusively a skirt girl lately. Love how cute it is and how relatively comfy and non-chafing. But I do feel kind of visible when I’m wearing one, I don’t see them often. I would like cuter ones than my plain black one!

  63. August 4, 2010 6:38 am

Shorts. I live & run on an Army post, and I’m not sure if I would be taken seriously if I were wearing a skirt.

I rewarded myself with a running skirt after completing my first double digit run. I tried some on in the dressing room a month before and felt magical. When it came time to buy the skirt I randomly found one (not at a sports store) on clearance and got it instead. It doesn’t fit well or look great, but I still love it and wear it every week. I have my sights on a better one I’d like to get before my 20 mile race next month. Love them.

I think they are so cute and would love one. However, with my limited budget, the only ones I’ve tried have been off-brand types from discount stores…baggy or tight in the wrong places, not flattering, and definitely not comfortable! Until I save enough dough for a nice one (or win one!), I’ll stick with my trusty shorts.

Skirts rock! Traditional running shorts have never done it for me and when I first tried a skirt with the compression short underneath–I thought I’d found perfection. I only have one, though, and would love to have another. Plus, just looking at my skirt makes me want to get out and run.

  68. August 4, 2010 6:55 am

I love my running skirts – and, yes, I own more than one. Running skirts make me feel flirty and powerful at the same time. I race competitively in mine, often winning overall or category awards, so I am serious about my running. But if I happened to be going to the Olympics, I probably wouldn’t wear one there either. I’ll make that decision if I ever come to it:)
My shorts sit in a closet. I won’t throw them out; one day, I may need them again.

I still feel a bit silly wearing a skirt on just a normal run, but they sure are nice when I do. Given how hard it is to find shorts that fit and work well for running, I could see myself moving towards more skirts, but right now I just have two.

I LOVE running skirts. If I’m not wearing a running skirt, I run in capris or longer spandex shorts. In all my 20 years of running, I have never found a super comfortable pair of shorts. Running skirts have been great for me for long runs, short runs, track workouts, grocery store runs…

I like my skirts. I’ve never had the “I feel less athletic/tough” feelings that some have while wearing them like I know some women have, and I’m not even that much of a skirt girl in my non-running life (more accurately, I’m not a pantyhose wearing girl – Yuck!). I have both shorts and skirts, and I’ve worn my skirts in all race distances from 5K through marathon. I just happened to be looking back through some race photos the other day, and I have to say my skirts really did make for a more flattering picture – now if I could just do something about that horrible facial expression…

  73. August 4, 2010 7:08 am

Before I had my second kiddo, I wore them to run all the time … but as I’m still losing a little extra, they are not my friend chafing wise. 😛 I really like them and still wear a couple casually with t’shirts since they’re super comfy and very cute. But to run, at least for now, I’ve got good ol’ capri pants. I look forward to the day I can race in a skirt again … I love the cute factor for sure.

  74. August 4, 2010 7:12 am

Yes to the skirt! And here’s why: I do all of my long runs in an Atalanta Commitment skirt. I’ve worn it for all three of my half-marathons too. I’ve never considered that it’s silly or frivolous, but then again, I’m not fast enough to take myself too seriously. The simple fact of the matter is that the skirt performs the way I need my running gear to perform. The shorts stay in place. They don’t rude up. Nothing chafes. These are two LARGE pockets for gels, my ipod, and a cell phone (if I think I’m going to get lost or need some assistance!). Unfortunately, none of my running shorts can meet all of these criteria. They either chafe in strange places (like the waistband) or ride up. And none of my shorts has the holy grail: pockets. I just bought a pair of Addidas with a hip pocket, but it’s barely large enough for my iPod.

When it comes to going the distance, the skirt gets it done!

I just recently discovered running in skirts. My running partner bought one, hated it, and passed it on to me. I fell in love and immediately bought two more. They make me feel cute while sweaty, feminine while athletic, and fashionable while I’m giving it all I’ve got.

  92. August 4, 2010 8:13 am

I’ve thought a lot about this topic. I even spent a half hour on a long run trying to explain the issue to my husband. I guess it is the kind of issue men don’t get…and don’t have to! I have friends on both sides. I’ve nearly always worn shorts. When I tried a skirt a few years ago, I liked it, but at that time I ran mainly at the gym, and I didn’t feel comfortable getting off the treadmill and strength training in it.
After reading RLAM and while training for my last mararthon, I decided to re-visit the skirt. I would be running the marathon for my anniversary with my husband, so I thought it might be fun to feel a little cuter than shorts can make me feel. After a few short training runs with the skirt, I loved how it was so cool and so comfortable. I felt like it actually kept me moving at a faster pace, because I didn’t want to be seen lumbering along at my usual snail’s pace with it.
When I took it out for an 18 miler, things changed. I chaffed where the shorts ended, (something that I’m happy and feel lucky to say NEVER happens when I wear shorts) and honestly, wearing it was just one more thing to think about…At the last minute I decided to run the kid’s run with my daughter in the skirt, and the marathon with my husband in the shorts. Now I still put on the skirt for shorter runs, and I will likely wear it tonight for the running club’s run (which will be followed by a street party down town).
It is a fun topic, in any case. I love laughing about it with my skirt loving and my skirt hating friends!

When I trained for my first half this summer I did my first 7 mile run one weekend in one, I loved it! They also give me a little more motivation to keep on going and smile while doing so. I know people sometimes give me sideways looks when they see me, but hey – I’m the one out running, you’re in a car! I also love that my skirts set off my thighs (which I run hard to make sure they stay fit) in a very flattering way. I’ve recently been seeing the running “dress” pop on in ads and catalogs – I can’t say I’m ready for that, but my skirts hold a special place in my heart and keep a smile on my face, something very important for a run!

Are you kidding me? I run my hardest training runs in skirts and my most intimidating races in skirts. Why? Because it sends the message LOUD and CLEAR that, “Yes, I am a girl, and yes, I just beat you…in a skirt.” It sends the same message of fierceness and femininity as wearing skirts in a mostly male office and being completely certain that I AM smarter and more balanced than my male counterparts, and I can look cute while doing it too. I think being a girl is so fun, and wearing a skirt while running is just one more way to celebrate and announce my pride and strength! I mean, come on, it’s also one more thing to make the boys jeaouls. Sure, they can wear skirts when they run, but they don’t look half as good as we do in them! Cheers ladies!

I am a newbie runner. Wanted to be a runner for a long time but for whatever reason I couldn’t “find my legs” (or lungs for that matter!). I turn 40 this year (on Saturday! Woo Hoo) — it is so LIBERATING! This past February I wondered what the heck I was waiting for and started training for my first race (6.1 miles) in Boulder — my Mother’s Day present. I ran an 8:44 minute mile. Better than I thought I was capable of. I am surprising myself each day and setting an example for my 5 year old and 3 year old (and husband). I am determined to break the “couch potato” lifestyle of my kids grandparents. Now that I have remained consistent in my training (the longest I have ever remained consistent) I am finding I want to be a little more “sassy” when I am running instead of trying to disappear into the trail or asphalt. I LOVE running!

I swing both ways on the issue. Mostly it depends on what’s clean. I have 2 skirts, both with shorts (not briefs) and 2 pairs of running shorts. I have to disagree with those who believe they are not serious enough for “real” athletic endeavors. A bigger issue–what up with the giant, body-strangling shorts worn in the NBA in recent years??? 🙂 My take on it: The running skirt offers restraint-free leg movement (and some ventilation on hot days) and the built-in shorts give a bit of compression for tired legs.

  111. August 4, 2010 8:46 am

OBSESSED with the skirt! My husband does not let me out of the house with only spandex on (thank you!), but I get chub rub if I do long distances in shorts. So, skirts are the best! Once I found out about running skirts, I got one right away. I was slightly overweight when I started running, and shorts had a tendency to ride up between my legs. I love the fact that many running skirts provide a little more coverage and have compression-type shorts underneath that help prevent “chub rub”. 🙂 Besides, the skirt makes me feel a little “kicky” when I run! Now that I have lost weight I have tried a few pairs of running shorts, but I still prefer the running skirt because it’s so flattering.

I love running skirts! I have been running for over 20 decades and I spent the majority of that time doing it looking just terrible. I’m talking poorly fitting Army PT uniform terrible. Now I own 3 running skirts and need – NEED more! I have to admit that when I am running trails I often feel odd when I am sporting my skirt because I am frequently the only skirt out there but I’d like to think that skirts will catch on more with trail ultra runners and I’ll be able to say, “Yeah. I’ve been wearing them for years!”

I am a new runner, started in March, ran 5 races so far all 5 k, got 3 more lined up and in November my first 10k. In the last 9 mos I Lost about 67 lbs due to health issues and major lifestyle changes and when I started running I was not ok wearing real running shorts so I wore basketball shorts to cover more of my thighs…I wish I had found these skirts! Now that I lost all that weight I do wear running shorts but I am still not 100%. confident that I should!!! I am 5’11” (now down under 140 lbs) so lots of legs to cover or show depending on the point of view!! I still say cover my husband says show ( nice guy!) Running skirt would be the perfect solution for me! I would love to try but cannot find any in stores near me only tennis skirts! So I am a yes on skirt!

I think the running skirts are great! I have one, by Champion, but only because they are super expensive! I can’t justify spending more than $40 on one piece of running clothing other than shoes. If they were less pricy, I would wear them all the time.

I wear skirts/dresses in my “other” life for the most part. Just the love the freedom of movement and the way they make me feel when I’m on the road. I wore one for my 1/2 marathon in January. I couldn’t have been felt more comfortable when I was running. Made me feel better post run as well! They can be expensive, but I’ve found them at TJ Maxx and outlet malls. That helps cut down on the cost.

I have to preface this post by admitting that I don’t run for hours at a time and I’m not training for a marathon but I do run regularly. Since reading Run Like a Mother, I have purchased two running skirts and I LOVE them. I love the North Face version because it has a pocket for my iPhone so I don’t have to worry about how to carry my all important music (and safety net in case something happens) plus I’m not self conscious that all my wobbly bits are exposed like when I’m wearing shorts. Plus – I have been working hard to lose 20 pounds this year and I feel more feminine so I like to look more feminine. I say running skirts are a boon to this runner girl!

I love my running skirt! After looking at all the pictures from my first 1/2 marathon I had a hard time not looking at the thigh that was exposed. I’m not a super thin runner, but I do love the muscle tone in my quads! I had seen so many gals in skirts so I tried one on at my neighborhood Fleet Feet. I LOVED IT instantly. I have bought a couple of running skirts at Target. I like them for runs of an hour or less. They are cute and functional without the expensive price tag of other brands. I’d love to find one that I could wear for the longer haul.

I am definitely a skirt girl, all the time. A running skirt is the only reason I can run in the warm weather of summer. I hate how shorts never stay put, bunch, and I always feel awful in them. So RLAM convinced me to try one by mentioning “the unfortunate crotch-bulge.” Newly postpartum, I knew any of my regular running shorts would have that problem, and I wasn’t quite comfortable pulling on bike-type shorts because, ahem, not everyone needs to see that my post-baby body isn’t quite in shape yet. I found one on clearance at Sierra Trading Post and fell in love. (The only thing I don’t like is its bright pink color–mostly because my double jogger is red!)

Now I’m on a quest to figure out whether I like the skirt with briefs more, even though it requires body glide on the thighs (see: not quite in shape yet), or the skirts with compression shorts. Thus far I’m a fan of the brief-type when it’s hot out, and of the compression shorts when it’s a little cooler or when I’m literally running errands with the jogger.

I’ve always struggled with what shorts to wear if I want to stop at the library or grocery store on the way without attracting too much attention and the skirts do the trick. (OK, maybe not the bright pink one, so that doesn’t get worn on errands.) I also like the longer compression shorts because the shorter ones, at least at the moment, ride up enough that they might as well be briefs. (It took nine months to get that out of shape, and another nine months to regain it, right? Right?!?!)

I still love my shorts too, especially for treadmill days, speedwork or, thus far, races. Now that I have a skirt with long compression shorts (Skirt Sports Happy Hour Skirt) I might bring it to a race so I can stretch without exposing anything afterward–but we’ll see.

I was skeptical when I first saw them, but having tried one I LOVE the concept of a skirt. And I do not normally wear skirts and dresses in “real life” as a rule. However, being of stocky build with legs that are not “runner slim” yet & will not be for some time, I have not found the right one yet. I really need the compression shorts for my thighs. I am limited budget right now due to cuts at work and going to school, so I can’t buy many. My first one was fine the first run, but the second time out, without a waist belt, it totally proved worthless. The skirt fell DOWN and the so called compression shorts rode UP! I was tugging & pulling the whole run. Not fun. I really have had my eye on the GGU, want to try one of the Skirt Sports dresses to. I see no reason why you can’t do a serious run in a skirt. It doesn’t change the train & power that you have, and if you can be more fashionable while doing so, why not?? How does that take away from the accomplishment??

I love rocking the running skirt look! I’m a total convert. I always have, until I got my first skirt with bun-huggers, and with those, I don’t!).

Honestly, I think wearing a skirt makes a runner-girl look MORE serious, as in — “Hey, I’m confident enough to be sporting this awesome, girly, flirty skirt while I kick ARSE on my 10-mile run.” 🙂

I also don’t wear shorts. They ride up and they make my thunder thighs look/feel even bigger. Right now, I love me some capris. I love my running skirt, but not for every run. I rotate it in with shorts. That’s because sometimes I don’t feel like looking very girlie for a run. Also, you have to wear a cute running top to wear the skirt and if I’m just slumming it with an old race shirt it looks better to wear shorts. I just bought a pair of running pants (yoga style) with a skirt attached for this winter and I can’t wait to try it out once it starts to get nippy again.I look a lot to see what other running ladies are wearing and noticed when I was vacationing in San Diego last week that I didn’t see ANY running skirts on Mission Bay near Fiesta Island. I like running skirts because I feel less exposed when doing errands etc. after doing a run. My biggest problem with them, however, is that the shorts underneath ride up almost every time, forming a sort of “bunchy panty” which can be very uncomfortable. In addition, I’d love to wear them for spin classes too but with those shorts riding up, it just wouldn’t work out. I’m still searching for the perfect running skirt – have tried 3 brands and haven’t found the perfect one yet!

I picked up my first skirt from the inventor of running skirts, Skirt Sports founded by Nicole DeBoom, in 2005 and felt so darn cute that I had to get out there. 10 minutes led to 20 then 1hr… you know the rest! Now, picking my skirt is just as much part of my workout as figuring out my route or interval lengths. I love the feel of skirts and will never wear shorts again. Since then though, I have ran in it. No real reason why, but I think I feel more like a hard-core runner person if I have running shorts on! I wear my running skirt when I need to carry my cell phone or things that need to be in a zippered pocket, but I love my shorts too! So fun to have a choice! I have been following your blog since it was on RunnersWorld and am excited to read your book too – can’t decide whether to get a copy for a belated mother’s day present for my mom, or just for myself (I probably won’t be a mom for a while yet…) – might have to do both!

I either wear a running skirt or shorts. My father in law actually introduced me to the skirt by buying me one for my birthday and I like it. My only complaint is that the little shorts underneath tend to ride up.

I have never tried a skirt but I definitely would (especially if one were to come my way free, ahem). As I sit here getting ready to nurse my 10-day-old boy for what will be one of 10 times today, I feel anything but fit and glamorous — so I would definitely be up for slipping on a running skirt sometime in the not-too-distant future and seeing what these now-somewhat-mushy legs can do!

My husband gave me a running skirt for Christmas last year and I was a little hesitant about wearing it. Once I tried it; I loved it. It’s so comfortable and fun. I didn’t realize it was such a divisive issue until I brought up how much I love running skirts on a girls’ weekend trip. I’m now working to convert my anti-skirt pals.

I have not yet become a skirt convert, but I am willing to be convinced. I have several friends that run with them and love them, but I have not yet bought one. In fact, I am often teased by running buddies that I must be afraid of being called girly:) Thus far shorts and running capris have done the job, but it couldn’t hurt to have something cute to wear on the days that you just feel icky about yourself. Maybe I will try one…

  198. August 4, 2010 1:10 pm

Wow, a lotta people love the skirts! I am – so far, anyway – firmly in the long shorts/capris category. I think anything less than an 8″ inseam would probably cause chafing for me. Also, I own exactly ONE dress and ONE skirt, so clearly, I don’t love skirts in my non-running life, either – mostly because I get chafing if I have to walk any distance when I’m wearing a skirt. But since so many women here seem to love the skirts, I may have to reconsider…

I need to try one because I have yet to find a pair of shorts that I like! I worry about my legs rubbing together though, and not to share too much, but I sweat a lot, so I would need a skirt with absorbent shorts underneath. Is there such a thing out there?

  200. August 4, 2010 1:17 pm

I would love to have more skirts. I bought one and the shorts underneath ride up in the middle like crazy. Definitely takes the “cute factor” out when you are reaching under a skirt to straighten/tug. So, I am on the hunt for one with a little more length and some breathability. But, I think they are about as cute as it gets while being sweaty and stinky. Although, I have to admit, I felt like I should have a tennis racket in my hand the whole time I wore it. Maybe I’ll get over it with the right skirt. So, I’m sort of on the fence, but am willing to give it another try.

I like running skirts as long as there are the right length of shorts underneath. The gym girl ultra is perfect and the shorts underneath don’t ride up. I have a couple of other skirts that I can’t wear for long distances, the shorts are too short and ride up. I love the pockets on the gym girl ultra. They are sturdy enough to carry Gu and chapstick.

In spite of having never worn one before to run in, the moment the doctor cleared me to run again (I just had a baby 6 weeks ago) I went out and bought a super cute running skirt. After reading your book, I was on the lookout for skirts. Found some Nike DriFit tennis skirts at Marshall’s. These have shorts underneath (like my nieces wear) and not a panty. I love them! I feel so much “prettier” than the middle-aged tomboy that I am. I immediately emailed a friend of mine and told her to run, not walk, to Marshall’s to get some skirts. She already had a few, and commented about how cute outfits are motivating for her. I need, however, to explore other brands. I want to try the panty kind, and I am desperate for pockets. I’ll take the humpday giveaway–two pockets would be great!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE running skirts! But, it has to have a longer compression short underneath. I, for the most part, only run in a running skirt now. I will ocassionaly run in shorts still, but it is rare. But, when I go to the gym to lift weights or cross train, I will NOT wear a skirt . . . not sure why, but I have not had the courage to sport a skirt at the gym yet.

  217. August 4, 2010 1:51 pm

I really love the skort for most forms of exercising – dance classes or working out – by the skort, I mean, a good type of water-resistant fabric skirt that actually has a pair of shorts under it. However, I’d love to have the courage to try running in a skirt! It sounds like a great liberating idea and you’d be able to get your legs moving more freely. Why not? The only problem I could forsee is if it’s a very windy day, it would not be good for modesty.

Haven’t bought one yet (see last week’s topic!), but am slowly thinking that I could convert. I was in compression shorts, but found that they exacerbated my GI issues so have switched to shorts with a liner which are MUCH better for my tummy. I recently bought my first running skirt and I love it! Very comfortable and I feel light and faster somehow when I wear it. I will say though, that I love that it’s not so skirt-like. It’s black, it’s not pleated or flouncy and it doesn’t really bounce and move around when I run. So it’s still kind of tough and sporty even if it is technically, a skirt 🙂

  222. August 4, 2010 2:01 pm

I haven’t worn a running skirt before but if I won this one I promise you I will wear it in the 1/2 marathon I’m training for in November!

I really like my skirts and don’t actually have any shorts that I can wear running that dont ride up unless I am wearing tights underneath them. They still ride up but tolerably.

I like the look of the Sugoi Moxie shorts. I don’t buy anything Nike so that is out. I would try shorts but am dubious that they wont ride up and give me a crotch wedgie 🙂

My skirts allow me to be feminine while living a very active dress unfriendly lifestyle (unless its a pretty long dress)! I have four boys and worrying about flashing the world my nether regions is nil when wearing a skirt with boy shorts. I am constantly bending down, squatting down, getting in and out of the backseat of the car or van ect.

Icing on the cake, they are very comfortable and I wear them all the time and not just running. Since I am a barefoot runner its nice to just kick off my flip flops and go for my run instead of lots of prep 🙂

They are a staple for me while coaching, working events, and as my everyday work as an Athletic Trainer and Massage Therapist. I can’t bring myself to ride or run in them, but not because people won’t take me seriously. Here in Florida that would just be waaaaaaaay to much fabric! The skirt being soaked with sweat? Skirts – yes! I was turned onto them by, no surprise, an article in Runner’s World and a pretty pink one from Skirt Sports was my first. I love them because there is (as SBS points out) no unsightly bulge, they reduce chafing in my experience, and I look better at the grocery store (who has time to change?) I wear them to work out and have worn my pink one in a marathon (actually a huge women’s running group pulled me over and asked about my skirt while running it!) My pink one from SS is super lightweight and I don’t look as horrible when it sticks to my legs in this humidity (compared with shorts). I ran during my pregnancy in a wonderful skirt from RunningSkirts — it had this great panel that covered and supported my belly and eventually protected me from the support belt I wore in late pregnancy. AND I think I looked cuter running in it. LOVE SKIRTS.

When I first started seeing skirts at road races 4-5 years ago, I silently scoffed at them. Because we are running toe to toe with men, I felt that no one would take a runner seriously if she was wearing a skirt. I wanted to be taken seriously. Fast forward to 2010 and I admit–I am kinda skirt-curious. I read about them. I look at them online. I asked skirt-wearers about them. I circle the racks of skirts at sporting goods stores and stare them down. I think about buying one… a lot. But I haven’t… yet. I think they are cute and that cute might not be so bad. When I played lacrosse I LOVED the phrase “dirt in a skirt!” Why am I being prejudiced toward running in one? And apparently they are pretty functional, so if I could go for a run without pulling my shorts out of my crotch even one time, I would be a happy (and cute) runner. So I am almost–ALMOST!–a skirt convert. Thisclose.

I’m a skirt girl 100%! I chick lots of guys in my skirt and win my AG a lot. My friend places in the top women all the time at trail races while sporting her skirt. I think trail runners embrace skirts more than road runners. I see more skirts at trail races than road races.

I have about 6 skirts and am venturing in to running dresses as well!

  265. August 4, 2010 4:27 pm

I’ve been known to sport a skirt a time or two. While it’s not necessarily my favorite thing to wear, I have to admit a wicked sense of pleasure when I pass a guy during a race while wearing one. Can’t help but think to myself, “Dude, you just got passed by a girl in a skirt.”

I love mine so much that I ration them to make sure one is clean for my long run each week. Plus, something about the cut of the waistband allowed me to wear both of mine until 26 weeks pregnant and still be comfortable. I get some inexplicable mental boost from doing a hard, dusty trail run in the mountains of Colorado in a hot pink skirt!

I started running a couple years ago and up until recently couldn’t bring myself to put anything but basketball shorts on to run because of the extra weight I carried on my thighs. Today, I am many pounds lighter – thanks to my new love for running – and the skirt I bought almost 6 months ago is too big for me! It’s time for a new one 🙂 I love that they make me feel girly!

I am still very much a novice runner. I love the feeling I get after a run knowing I have done something good for my piece of mind and body. But I am not one of those women who feels comfortable in “feminine” clothing. I like the idea of looking nice and dare I say a little sexy but I also love the idea of a woman who can kick it with the big boys. I looking at the running skirts and said “no way!” But I took my first running class through Gallagher’s Fitness in Salem, OR (Thank you Susan for all the support) and asked the question “what’s the deal with skirts?” Well to make a long story short I was tempted enough to try it out and love it. My big booty is covered, I feel pretty (which is hard for me to feel like in my mommy jeans and tees) and comfortable. I am a converted skirt 🙂 I can kick butt and look good doing it! I was so excited the day my thighs were finally toned enough to go without the compression shorts, and just some body glide! I’m not sure I would have survived the brutal heat this summer without them.

I’m a skirt girl…bought one before my first marathon in 2009, one last training run in it and I was sold. Every since I grew 4 more inches in HS to be 5’10” and turned into rowgirl I haven’t been able to find shorts that don’t bunch up between my thighs…the skirts end all of that and I feel like a girl. Honestly, never wanted to feel like a girl before I became a mom, but now I revel in my skirts, my mom-power, and my time on the road and trails.

…Sarah, tried the capris…I’ll likely do it again in the fall and in temps closer to 40, but anything hotter and I’m just too hot!

  288. August 4, 2010 6:56 pm

While I have not completely given up on shorts, I do admit that I LOVE skirts. In fact, I actually rely on skirts to give me a boost in confidence when I’m feeling down…whether due to lack of motivation or injury. For me, skirts put the FUN back in running, especially on days when all I feel like is a run-down mom of two always-amped-up boys aged 2 and 4.

I do both. I only own one running skirt and loved it initially but have put on a little bit of extra weight and while it still fits, it rides up. I’ve yet to purchase a new one, the cost of a good one feels a bit more prohibited then some cheap shorts that do the job. I agree with those who feel that shorts seem like they’re needed for “serious” runs. With shorts I don’t fear chafing.

I just bought a skirt this summer, and I wore it in a 15k, and now for every long weekend run. It makes me feel like I’m naked, in a good way. Kind of makes me dread winter.

  291. August 4, 2010 7:14 pm

I do ‘skirt’. More often than not these days it seems. I started wearing them for races, as kind of a treat to add to the celebratory atmosphere. I’d do my hard training in whatever but when it came race time I’d be all gussied up— like prom.
I find myself reaching for skirts more often these days, even for the sloggiest of training runs….the ones in extreme heat…the ones that are complete before the sun makes its appearance. They help remind me that I am special, not just on race day, but everyday, just for getting out there.

  292. August 4, 2010 7:15 pm

I have never tried a skirt, simply put. I am also one of those people who thinks it just seems a little weird. However, I have in the last month become more in tune to the blog-o-sphere and even started my own blog. I have found many sites that I really enjoy reading about running and parenting and other fun topics like food and having a fun career! RLAM has been a great source for me to find other running mom blogs and sites and I have really enjoyed all that I have seen. But one thing that I am seeing a lot on all of these sites is this addiction to running skirts and it is starting to really tempt me to try one out. Wouldn’t this be a perfect opportunity for me to give it a try? On the running end, I have been running for about 3 years, but I mostly consider myself a wanna-be runner. This summer I have gotten serious though…I completed my goal of running 100 miles in the middle of July (from the start of June) and now I am working on finding my next race to run! Regardless of whether or not I win this skirt, thanks for your book and thanks for this site!

I’m always self conscious of my butt when I run, so a skirt would be perfect for me. My only requirement would be that it has spandex shorts underneath, as I tend to get the chub-rub (I mean, honestly, you’d have to have about -4% body fat to NOT have chub-rub), and there’s nothing more irritating (both physically and mentally) than shorts that ride up between my thighs.

I was not a running skirt girl. In fact, I had seen some articles on Runner’s World about the uprising of the running skirt and thought to myself that I was just to “serious” about running to flit around in a skirt (HA!). I thought it would make me seem like I wasn’t serious. I thought if I showed up at a race with a little skirt on….well, I might be mistaken for a “girl”. After all, these women out there are serious. Serious about what they eat, drink, how they train, and most of all what they put on there body for a race.

Then Valentines Day came— my sweet, amazing husband knew that I was not the kind of girl that would like $100 roses delivered to my job. No, I am a practical girl. So, he went to my favorite store and the sales girl told him about the “newest fad in running apparel”. Home he came with a little black running skirt and a matching top and sports bra. I won’t lie to you, reading stranger, but I did to my precious husband. “Oh, I love it….It’s to cute and thoughtful…..I’m just not sure about the size……oh, you’re are right…..you smart man…..it’s the same size as my other shorts from that shop…….what? run tonight in it? oh….well……hum….”

I decided to give the skirt a try, then the magic happened, and I fell in LOVE. It was so breezy and cool. It stayed in place and swayed just ever so slightly, making me feel like the girl that wore a dress to P.E. and the coach made her play in it anyway. It was so liberating. Nothing bunched, pinched or stuck out. It was like wearing yoga shorts, or better yet, just my underwear, but without the fear of people stopping and staring. There was no pointing or laughing—it was amazing.

I started training exclusively in running skirts, and therefore on the morning of a race didn’t think twice about running in my skirt. However, when I showed up at the race, I stuck out like a sore thumb. I could just see the other women staring at me, sizing up the competition. based on my clothing choice they were planning on eating me up in the first mile….or at least that is what I perceived. How wrong we both were. I placed beautifully, and now my mantra stands, “beware of the skirt!”

I had never heard of running skirts 2 months ago. 2nd of September I’m going to run a 5k race. In march I couldn’t run longer than 200 m at a time. I was devastated. One reason was my poor muscles after two births. When I heard about the skirts I went and bought one. I live it. It makes me remember I do this for myself. Here in Sweden I haven’t seen another skirt yet. Now I run 25 min straight and I have no problems at all. To me the skirt is the icing on a cake that’s just for me.

I love running in skirts! It feels like they cover the bum a little better than just a pair of shorts. And they play up my best feature – my legs. I started running in a tennis skirt 5 years ago,and have since added a few running skirts to my kit. However, I’ve lost some weight and now my skirts droop a bit, but I honestly just safety pin the waist and keep wearing them. Skirts rule! 🙂

Just got my first skirt about a month or 2 ago and I can’t wait until the budget allows me to buy MORE!

I love running skirts, but not for running. I think they’re fun to wear around, but I don’t find them comfortable while running. Honestly….I’ve never had a good skirt (just a cheapie), so I could easily be converted.

I’ve been working on a new site, fitpy.com, that helps you compare fitness gear and prices across multiple online stores. Under women’s apparel in the Running category, there is a selection for running skirts. There are pages of them appearing from eBay!
