Hump Day Giveaway: Your Inner Beast?

September 22, 2010
by

As much as entering a designer women’s boutique freaks me out—six items on a rack, nothing in the store above a size 4, including the waify, silent salesgirl—I do love unique things. I could browse etsy for hours. (Oh, wait I do.) My favorite (non-running) skirt is a wrap-around madras number, circa 1970 or so, that first belonged to my mom, then lived in our dress-up box for 20 years, and I saved from the giveaway pile 8 years ago. (I pretty much can’t breathe when I wear it, but no biggie right?) And I can’t bring myself to give away my beloved, really awful red jeans that I bought in Germany in 1993 because, well, they’re red jeans I bought in Germany in 1993—and who else has those?

Strong and beautiful: best combo ever.

So when I spotted an Oiselle tee at a race this spring, I did a double take. I love the fresh graphics, the simple colors, the fact it doesn’t look like a shirt every other runner is wearing. I had no idea how to pronounce the name, but I knew I had to remember the spelling so I could look it up. Fast forward a few months, and I’ve finally done my research. Oiselle, founded in 2003, by Sally Bergesen, a swift running mom who describes running like this:
“For me, the sport has always been about something more. At times, it’s been my religion, my therapy, my escape, my girl time. But perhaps simply enough, it’s been my sense of freedom.”

No wonder I was drawn to her designs.

So you pronounce Oiselle wa zell, which is a French word for bird that also alludes to weightlessness. A clunky German major, I have never described my running as weightless or bird-like, even if we’re including the flightless ostrich in the avian family. But on really good days, when the wind is at my back, my legs are willing and my mind is able, I have felt slightly antelope-esque for a short stretch. When that happens, I feel invincible. And, as Sally says, free.

Live. Run. Fly. What else is there?

At the risk of sounding like Barbara Walters, I’m wondering, what animal would you use you describe your running? Cast your net widely; it doesn’t have to have a speed characteristic (although a whole pack of cheetahs are welcome). Maybe it’s a nurturing animal, like a hound; or one that’s simply content with the same old routine, like the cuddly koala; or a predator, like a great white, which is my son Ben’s current fave animal.  (“How do they chew the seals, Mom?” he asked the other day. “Kind of like how you chew a chicken nugget,” was the best I could do on such short notice.)

Humor me with this slightly juvenile inquiry, and you might be one of three random winners who are rewarded with a very sophisticated prize: an Oiselle top from their new fall 2010 line. (Two are displayed here; I will e-mail winners a couple of choices.)

So where do you and your running land in the zoo?

p.s. Speaking of unique, a fun video of Oiselle’s running dress. Maybe it’s time Grant and I talk about renewing our vows?

I think when I start running I feel like a sloth. Slow going, working my way slowly to the next level. Once I get started, perhaps a miniature pony. I am the short gal and not the fastest. I’ll never be the quarter horse or stallion, but I am still a horse, just a small version!

Hmmm – my first reaction was an elephant – I am not small and when I get tired my feet kind of thud. But then I thought no – I may not be small but I am strong – and while elephants are strong they aren’t the animal I think of when I think of strength. So lets go with a Clydesdale – I will keep with Andrea’s horse analogy. I am on the taller, and bigger side, I am strong, when I am feeling good in my runs it is almost magical (for me not for anyone watching) and yet I can still plod along when it isn’t as good.

The first thing that came to mind was a chubby lab or golden retriever. You how they just trod along and look like that are singing in their head “do de do, do de do”, but then the longer they plod a long the more their tongue hangs out! Not sure that my tongue hangs out but I probably look like a lab after too many ball chases by the time I get home, but all the while trying to keep that do de do while out there. And what I’d give for that doggie nap afterwards 🙂

It may be cliche, but I’m a turtle. Actually, I’ve always thought of myself as a turtle…can hide in my shell, rarely sticks her neck out, etc. So it’s fitting that my running is about as slow…but it also goes with the age-old fable where “Slow and steady wins the race.” I may never win any races, but the race of just getting out there and running is enough for me.

I copied copied a bible verse onto my race bib of my first 5K, and I think it applies here.

“It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to stand on the heights.” Psalm 18:32-33

I really liked the anaolgy of the deer because they are swift and agile animals.

Absolutely, I run like a goat. I trot along with no real compulsion for speed. But I’m easily distracted and curious so I can pulse ahead to check out something or someone interesting. Curiosity satisfied, I return to my clippity clop. Love the trails, and I’ll eat almost anything when I get back home!! ( I really need to prepare healthy foods before I head out the door!) BAAAAAAA.

When I go for a run I often feel like my running partner – my chocolate lab. He just goes wherever I take him and he’s happy to just trot along at whatever pace I go. He doesn’t have an especially pretty gait but it gets the job done. He’s usually dirty and a bit smelly when we get home but happily tired and thirsty. He always has that dog smile on his face – just happy to be out there.

A squirrel! I have a tendency to run here, there and everywhere on every run but my long run! If I was more coordinated I would probably resort to hopping, skipping and climbing trees because of my jubilation of being alone for a few minutes! It also describes my thought process until about mile 3 when I have worked through all lifes problems 🙂

Do they have chameleons in zoos? Is that even how you spell it? That would be me…totally blending in with my surroundings. Raining out? If there is no lightning, then it’s out the door and loving it. Marathons I’m mid-pack. Less than, I save some for a great finish. Not sure if that is the chameleon way but it’s me!! K, gotta run. Peace.

If I HAD to pick one (and I do, because I heart oiselle and can never justify the $$!), I’d pick a mountain goat. I’m trying out trail running and completely falling in love, as I sort of knew I would. Even on the roads, I run a lot of hills and I feel like I am jumping along the hills, not like a bird, but like an agile animal who’s exactly where she needs to be.

Just wanted to comment that I was surfing around on the oiselle site and their prices are pretty good, and they do have a sale section. I saw them at a local running shop a while ago and it seemed like they were higher, so don’t want to misrepresent a great company (that seems to pay attention to “green” stuff too).

I think my animal might be a working horse at a ranch. Some of my runs are more work than fun…plodding along, carrying my heavy load, feeling discomfort and not enjoying much of it at all. But then some of my runs feel like freedom runs…like the ranch hand opened the gate (my front door) and let me loose and I am loping along, wind blowing through my hair, kicking up dirt, singing along to my tunes, feeling like I could go all day and loving it. The pain doesn’t register on these runs because it feels like progress and power!

  36. September 22, 2010 8:21 am

I would have to say a puppy…. I get really excited about the thought of a run. I want to run as fast as I can and I think it’s all great….just a few minutes into it, I’d rather go lay in the shade and take a break panting from all my hard work. But if you make me go back to the house, I’m going to cry the whole time begging to go back out again. I’m fully in whatever moment is RIGHT NOW. That’s good when it’s a good moment, but really bad when I’m tired, or sore, or distracted!! 😀

  52. September 22, 2010 9:32 am

The animal I look like or the one I feel like? Because I’m pretty sure there’s a difference! When I run, I feel like a big cat like a panther or jaguar. I feel the strong muscles in my haunches (do we have haunches?) and legs, eyes narrowed and focused, arms doing their part to move with the rhythm. I am sure-footed and nimble. I feel fast and slightly mean. I am aloof because I’m all up in my head.

Now. What I look like when I run. God. Probably something like a rhino. I come down hard on my feet, wheeze, and sway from time to time.

So maybe I’m a combo animal like Napoleon Dynamite’s “Liger.” I’m a Jagrhino.

I shuffle, I plod, I trudge but then there are brief intervals of true speed where I think I look strong-muscles tight, steel determination. At those times I see a cheetah or jag or even a housecat with their eyes on their prey. Almost as soon as I start feeling kick arce though I either trip, my knees start to hurt or my ipod shuffles to a lame song I forgot to delete. Immediatly I am back to the well intentioned trudge which more resembles a burly bear on the sauce.

True story: while on a trail run a few weeks ago, I heard a rustling noise in the woods to my right. Out popped a red fox, carrying an unfortunate black squirrel in her mouth. She started trotting along on the trail behind me, and stayed there for nearly a full mile (I tracked her on my Garmin). Her presence thrilled me, but made me a little nervous too (I mean, she had a dead animal in her jaws). Since then, I’ve adopted her as my totem. So, to answer your question, I am a fox! I am shy. I don’t have the sharpest teeth, the rippliest muscles or the most glamour. I tend to hunt (run) alone, and I don’t catch big game (great times, age group wins etc.). But I’m persistent, enjoy trail runs and every now and then I capture a squirrel (a PR).

One of my fave motivating songs is “Run Like an Antelope” by Phish, which features the lyrics “Set the gear shift for the high gear of your soul, you gotta run like an antelope out of control!” It always puts a goofy grin on my face and a bounce in my step.

I would have to say that I start out feeling, or looking like, a duck. I kind of waddle my way through that first “ouch, ouch, ouch” 1/2 mile or so. But once I hit my stride, I feel a little more graceful like a swan. I certainly am not fast, but when I hit my stride, I feel like I’m gliding over water, nice and smooth. By the end of the run, though, I’m sometimes back to waddling. 🙂

When I used to cross country ski in college, I was described as a butterfly as I had a pretty graceful stride. I rarely ran back then. Now, however, with more weight around the hips I feel more like a Clydesdale and pictures from races often show that both feet are on the ground. In my mind, though Clydesdale’s are big and strong and go on forever. That’s what I hope to do.

I have enjoyed reading everyone’s comments. As for myself, I would say a Bobcat. I am not fast, and not great at long distances, but I think I run a little like cat. I try to stay light on my feet, and I naturally run on my midfoot/forefoot. Or like a giraffe because I’m tall and stretch my neck even taller when I start getting tired. Random, and I couldn’t tell you why. Probably from dance training.

  105. September 22, 2010 2:08 pm

I think I would have to go with a mini horse. I’m short, I feel like when I run, my legs look stumpy, and I have a shorter stride. I have trouble keeping up with the average-to-tall runner and their go-on-forever long legs, and of course, I’m slow.

Well, as much as I’d like to be all about the CHEETAH or GAZELLE, I instead had to focus my thoughts more along the lines of, “If Barney Rubble was an animal… what kind would he be?”

I’m the one in the group who plans the route, pre-runs the route to make sure it’s safe enough and makes sure we all stay together, in a pack, and did I mention, is everyone safe? But I have short legs (in proportion to my extra long torso)… and I have to sort of trot to keep up with my pack. So. Yeah.

If running solo, I enjoy whatever route my little legs meander towards and just enjoy the sights, sounds and smells ’til I’m ready to come home–1 mile or 20–when I’m calling my shots, life is good–It’s this freedom that created my love of running in the first place.
On weekends, I also have an awesome little running group–my pack–who keep me in line and on track. The 7 of us are completely diverse (ages, genders and capabilities), but we are our own gang–great friends who have been exploring and conquering (we began with halfs and moved up to fulls & 50ks!) with the loyalty of man’s best friend. With them, I feel confident, content and more importantly–capable of anything.

Well- I just don’t know what animal I am. I am 5 foot nuthin, 180 sumpthin’ and slow as…well…you know. What I DO know is that when I started running last fall, it was very easy to get going…feeling pretty good about myself being out there, trying to improve health and actually making an effort UNTIL, and it inevitably would happen…UNTIL the perfect 20 somthin’ yr old, 110 lb gazelle came running past with the wind flowing through her perfect ponytail, in her perfectly cute running shorts like she was out for a run just ’cause she felt like having a little breeze in her face while waiting for her nails to dry. She would run effortlessly, hardly even out of breath, no IPOD necessary to keep her going, no sweat band around her head, no sweat pools under her perfectly perky boobs. There I am in my completely drenched oversized cotton sweatpants (yes, now I see the error of my ways) soiled hat with hair falling out of the edges, fighting the wind, about to keel over. So if she’s the gazelle, what animal did I feel like? Cow, elephant, rhino., or maybe something green with envy like Kermit the frog..take your pick. BUT you know what? Me, the green rhino…I was out there. I was out there, and I kept getting out there. I am slow, I will probably never win a race, but I DID finish my first half marathon in April after training through some cold ass winter nights (at 13 weeks pregnant no less), and I’m counting the days till I can put my shoes back on and get out there again. (waiting for my Oct 8th due date now 🙂 )

Penguin is what comes to mind when I think about the beginning of my run…plodding along on land, flippers slapping the ground. That’s me as I start my run…slowly getting my breathing and legs in rythm…And then as the penguins enter the water, they become steady and smooth, picking up speed as they go along, until they step back onto solid ground and are plodding along one flipper at a time until they rest. For me, there is a beginning, middle, and end to my runs. At the end, sometimes a loud noise (which I imagine penguins do as well),to say, “Well done!”

Long gams weren’t necessarily made for the sprint!

With her as my inspiration, I’d like to aspire to be a wolf: smooth running, tough, able to handle any elements and resilient. Not sure I am quite there, but it’s something to aspire to!

Last week I had my first run in the rain. It was exhilarating and in that moment I was completely happy. I came across a little black chihuahua who was prancing around in the rain too. He looked as happy as I was! In the runs since that day I think of him and try to recapture his (and my) enthusiasm. So I’m a happy little chihuahua!

A black widow spider. I’m all legs. Oh, and I’m the nicest person you know… that is till you get me on the trails. I’m oddly competitive and will devour anyone in my sights… or at least try too.

    P.S. I ♥ Etsy too!

I have to go with a 13 year old yellow lab. We had one of these until recently, and I watched him laboriously make his way from the living room floor (with a huge grunt as he lifted himself up) and then out the front door (after much coaxing) for his daily walk. The vet said he needed exercise to stay healthy, so we often took him for small walks around the neighborhood. Very, very, slow walks. He panted and sometimes heaved as we went along, but gamely made it out the door and got his daily exercise. That pretty much sums up my running. A little grunting to get off the couch, a little coaxing by my husband, and then a little exercise whether I really wanted it or not. 🙂

I’m like a hamster — low to the ground and squooshy and round in the middle no matter how hard I run . And I just go round and round on that wheel — the variations on my neighborhood loop allow me to rack up anything from 4 miles to 10 miles without much thought (or variety).

(I’d also stay up all night if my kids didn’t like mornings so much!!!)

Am I allowed to be an insect? I think I run most like an ant. I may not be the fastest, but I work hard at it and keep on trudging along day in and day out.

A little on the elephantish side – being a beginning runner who could stand to lose a few pounds. I shuffle more than I have an elegant stride – but I’m o.k. with that for now. But, I am dreaming big dreams and I’ll soar like an eagle one day!

In the words of my mother, I most closely resemble a “gazellephant.” This of course is the unfortunate result (I guess) of a romantic union between a gazelle and an elephant. It wants so much to be graceful like the gazelle but simply cannot get there due to its imposing size and strength.

It is of course very beautiful in its own unique way, not the fastest, lot the lightest on its feet, but happy to trumpet about its mileage to anyone who might listen.

In defense of my mom who loves me more than most people, she referred to herself as a gazellephant and I stole it!

I am that little bulldog running with my strong little legs and just clipping away at a steady pace. I usually have that slightly pissed off face just like bulldog, but I don’t stop. Bulldog determination. That’s me.

I would say I am a running bear.

    Why?

Because I am an on again off again runner. I run for a few months, get injured or lazy, then I hibernate for a few months with Ben and Jerry and any cookie within site. Then I realize I have put on a few layers of extra fat and decide I need to start running again…until…then it is back to my cave full of latte’s and sugar laden delicacies.

The flip side? I am a killer Mama Grizzly, do something to my kids and look out!

    LOL!

I have been a runner for a really long time and it wasn’t until I started training for races that I thought of Rage, that’s my old Pug. I used to take Rage out for 4 mile runs all the time and his short little legs would go go go and then once he was tired he would plop down and there was no one that could get him up. I ended up carrying him the rest of the way…he was always content with that!

Sometimes, during my long runs I feel like Rage. I want to plop down and have someone carry me the rest of the way. Now wouldn’t that be lovely 🙂

Most likely a turtle – or a ‘penguin’. But it doesn’t matter, because the best thing about running, is that I can be whatever I want to be. And today, I was a gazelle : )

I had to give this lots of thought but I finally came up with my answer, hope I’m not too late! I run like a lioness. I run in a pack, more often than not. I’m not fast, so I’m happy to pick out the weak one to hunt down. And like the lioness it’s my job to bring home the groceries.

I would say a bear. I can be slow just chugging along, but often, every once in awhile speed it up. Also, I don’t like to run outside in the winter here in New England, so I always say I hibernate and run on the treadmill. Going to try the whole running outside in the cold this year though!

Too funny. A friend often encourages me by telling me I’m a beast on my runs. Silly I know, but it’s never occured to me to decide what beast I am.

I know I’m not the only one who gets this mantra stuck in my head “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming” (Thanks to watching Finding Nemo for the zillionth time) So I guess I’m a fish and if I get to choose which kind. I’m thinking a Salmon, sleek and strong swimming up river.

maybe an ostrich ? I have long legs and in middle school we were watching a film showing different animals running and someone said that looked like me – crushing to a 14 year old girl, but I have learned to appreciate being tall, and I am enjoying my running and reaching new miles that I never thought I could at 44, or at any age.

Since I am a new beginner- back to running after a back injury and surgery- I see myself as a baby duckling. I am doing my best to keep up with the Mama and Papa ducks I see cruising past me. Don’t want to be the slow one. Getting stronger, faster and running longer each time. I know the more I keep up with it, the better I will do, just like those little ducklings!

I am a manatee. I go with the flow of the road or the trail, I take the hills and swells as they come and go. I am not competitive but am playful like the manatees I once saw at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. I encourage any other runners who are around me and wish them a good day. I move with grace and assuredness but speed is not my strength. I run as a manatee.

A few times a year I visit my in-laws at their farm in southern Alabama and even though the threat of getting chased by a wild animal is probably high, I still love to run on the dirt roads that surround their house. When I step out of the slow routine of farm life and head out, three dogs join me. Most dogs at “the farm” could not fathom the idea of being on a leash or contained in a fence or in a home, so when I jog by, they immediately jump up from their comfy front door mat and invite themselves to run with me. (Yes, the Forrest Gump scene always comes to mind). I have decided that I am most like Rocko, a white dog with black spots that appears to be a bulldog and pit bull mix. Rocko and I are not too skinny, not too fat, more toned than muscular, easygoing, and just happy to be outside going for a run at a nice, steady pace. We never have the desire to catch up with the other two dogs – a hyper, petite jack russell who everyone fears will get ran over on the main road or the loyal, black lab who has the ability to run fast, but prefers to run just a little ahead, so he can keep an eye out for any possible dangers or to round up some more friends.

So, As I thought through this my mind went through so many animals as I feel like my runs are all so different – long and steady, short and all out, my burnt out days………… Overall I would have to say an Eagle (a mother Eagle that is). They are both beautiful and strong as I feel ANY mother embodies these traits. They leave their nest, their home & family they have so diligently and thoughtfully built and they SOAR. I feel like I soar when I run, I take in the beauty around me and fly during my little piece of time, my escape for that moment. Then I so proudly return to my nest, feeling as I have been out doing something to bring back to my family. Maybe not an tangible gathering as an eagle would have for her family but my soul, my body & my mind are fed as I walk through those doors a little more clear to begin my nesting again.
