Hump Day Giveaway: What’s Your Dream Race?

October 6, 2010
by

Thousands of thrashing bodies and no pool wall for a break. What's not to love?

I’ll give mine up right here: Kona. Hawaii. Ironman World Championships. 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking, then a marathon to finish things up. (It’s this Saturday. I won’t be there.)

When I was growing up, I used to watch the Hawaii Ironman on ABC’s Wide World of Sports on a rabbit-eared black and white television. At the time, the athletes just seemed insane to me. I remember watching a 23-year-old Julie Moss, about to win the race, collapse just feet from the finish line. Who pushes their body that hard? My athletic resume, at that point, consisted of a random dodgeball game in gym and left field in softball, and just watching her collapse, then get up again, then collapse again almost made me want to collapse.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen–and this little bit of intrigue about the human body, and what it’s capable of doing, crept into my still-forming brain. It remains there, and these days, when I can get past the grocery list, the e-mail inbox, the bill paying, it makes appearances, like a ray of sunshine poking through a  cloud cover.

To me, an Ironman still feels ridiculously ambitious, but not totally impossible. Twenty years of being an endurance athlete has taught me that if I train smart and give myself enough time to get my body strong and stay injury-free (read: I start training now for a race in 2012), I could see an IM finish line. But in true Dimity fashion, I’d go to finish, not to read what number is on the clock when I do.

(And although I said I’ll never run another road marathon, I won’t eat those words entirely. I’ve heard that the running portion of Ironman is actually easier than an a straight-up marathon: you’ve already gone so far, another five or six hours of walking/running really doesn’t feel that bad. I’m not sure if I really believe that, but I’ll believe it for now.)

Kona is my dream race because it’s the pinnacle of the sport, but I know I’ll never race there. In order to pilot your wheels on the famed Queen K Highway, you either have to qualify by being a top age-grouper or enter a lottery, and given my luck lately, I think Ben would write me an apology note in cursive before I’d get in there. So if I entered Kona, that means I’d have to a) race really fast (not gonna happen) and b) do *two* Ironmans (definitely not gonna happen). One complete, kinda crazy test of my endurance will be plenty, and you’ll be sure to hear about it when I sign on the dotted line. (I’m thinking 2012, but I’ve got a little time to mull it over and, um, get stronger.)

The blade-light: shoes that mince PR's.

What’s your dream race? It could be a dream that you can make come true–oh, that’s sounding vaguely Disney-esque, no?–or one that truly just lives in your head for inspiration, like the Everest Marathon. (Which, btw, sounds like hell to me. Talk about dehydration-induced headaches.) Let us know and one random commenter will win a very sweet Ironman-flavored outfit from K-Swiss.

The shoes are the Blade-Light Run, neutral racing shoes that which weigh in at a waifish 9.3 ounces. (Julie Dibens, a pro British triathlete who has a shot at winning in Kona will be sporting an even svelter variation of them on Saturday. I love her blog since she gets flat “tyres” and calls a good race a “cracker.”)  Pairing with the blade runners is a awfully cute, but very functional running skirt and wicking, high-peformance raglan tee, both branded with the infamous MDot that signifies you go the distance. I doubt Julie will change into a skirt in transition two to finish in Kona, but we figured her skin-tight race suit probably wouldn’t be your outfit of choice when you hit the neighborhood streets at 5:30 a.m.

So where do you run in your dreams? Any race, any distance, any reason.

p.s. Three winners of the yurbuds giveaway will be notified on our Facebook page today. Like us if you haven’t, please; love it when the winners actually chime in on FB!

My dream race: Ironman 70.3 Muncie, Indiana… I know, right?! Not a glamorous location but it is close to my family and friends and they could watch me tackle it! I think having them there to cheer me on to the finish would make it my dream come true race! 🙂

    • October 6, 2010 6:31 am

I think that Indiana sounds fantastic. Having familial support sounds like a glamorous location to me. 🙂 I ran my first 1/2 in Omaha, Nebraska a few weeks ago – nothing was glamorous about the location but my family made it the best ever, cheering me on.

No doubt, the Iron distance has its twisted allure, but my dream race since 2003 has been the Mount Desert Island Marathon in Bar Harbor, Maine. MDI has been my family’s home for decades, and I ran my first marathon a year after seeing marathoners pass my parents home in Seal Harbor, while I was home during my father’s final illness. Now, my mother lives a half mile from the finish line, and my brother has a restaurant a block from the finish line, and I’m hoping to stay injury-free in 2011 so that I can make this dream a reality 8 years after my father’s death.

    • October 6, 2010 4:08 am

Nancy – I live in New Hampshire and I am thinking of Mt Desert next year. I hear it is simply amazing. What a beautiful way to race – with your family around you and your dad in your heart! Go for it!

      Hi Nancy,
Good luck with your training! I am running my first marathon at age 57 in 2 weeks- the MDI marathon in Bar Harbor. I guess I could have chosen a marathon with an easier course but wanted to run something “special”. My dream has been to run a marathon and decided this year that time was ticking away. What was I waiting for? I am nervous but determined. I’ll think of you when I run the hills in Seal Harbor.

My dream race is any that I could do with my boys…. NOT pushing them in the jog stroller! They aren’t quite old enough yet but in a couple of years we may be able to start on some 5Ks.

(P.S. It would be pretty cool to run ANY race in Hawaii… that SMELL!! But since this girl doesn’t so much swim as she “avoids drowning”, I think the Ironman is out!)

    • October 6, 2010 6:29 am

I’m with you on the IM. LOL
I can’t wait for my boys to be old enough. They’re too heavy for me to push them far in our stroller, but to run with them. I love running outside with them but something farther than 50 yards would be even better LOL

I started running about two years ago with my now-16 year old son. We do 5ks all the time, are doing two half marathons this year and I dream of doing a full marathon with him. We have the best routine. We travel to the race together, warm up together, and then he takes off once the race starts. But the best part is he waits for me at the finish line with a big hug and a bottle of water. I wouldn’t trade these memories for anything in the world.

My dream race isn’t glamorous or even that challenging for most of you! But being a military wife, that has moved 7 times in 13 years….I now live 3000 miles away from my family. So my dream is to return and re-run my first race. Bloomsday – it is a 12k on the first Sunday in May in Spokane WA. The first Sunday in May is also always close to my birthday – I ran it the first time ON my 10 birthday – so I have convinced my husband ‘help’ me fly home and run Bloomsday in 2012 for my 40th. If all goes well it will be me, my husband, and both of my girls finishing the race together. Well that’s the dream anyway!

I don’t think my dream race would be anywhere specific…it would be some random 10 mile race with perfect running weather (50’s w/a few clouds). Some rolling hills but relatively flat. Prefer somewhere near the ocean so I could hear the surf while we run. i’m totally prepared – hydrated, well-fed the night before. I would run with purpose but take in and enjoy all the sights and sounds around me. I would finish strong and my running buds would be waiting for me with cold beers in hand. Life is good!!

My dream race would be any race that my sisters and I finish together. Right now we are training for a 10K next summer (neither of my sisters have ever run before and are very over-weight). I just started running in January and I love it. Someday I will finish a race and not feel like puking my guts out….but until then….I’ll just keep trying.

    • October 6, 2010 6:27 am

My dream is to run the Disney Princess 1/2 with my sisters – but I’d take any race! It’d be even better if my mom would join us.

I have a near reverence for Iron(wo)men. Kona is definitely number 1!

I’ve secretly dreamed of completing Antarctica Marathon, as well as the Ironman Lake Placid triathlon. But, to tell you the truth, my ultimate dream event would be any race (any distance) that I could complete with my friend Doug whose own journey to health and fitness got me out the door and running (actually training for the Army 10-Miler) nearly 10 years ago. A year after completing my first Army 10-Miler, I was running marathons. I haven’t stopped since, but sadly have never gotten a chance to run a race with my friend Doug–mostly due to our geographically remote work schedules and his deployments overseas.

    • October 6, 2010 6:27 am

My sister is in the Air Force & is being deployed soon. I hope she gets back in time to run a 1/2 marathon here in Nebraska with me in May. Plan soon enough and hopefully you and Doug can work out a time to run together. 🙂 Good luck

  10. October 6, 2010 5:58 am

Maybe Julianne and I can go to Antarctica together because that’s my dream race, too – the Antartica Marathon. I read a book about it this summer and thought it was the coolest thing ever.

If I did that, then I may as well work to become a member of the 7 continents club.

…That led me to Google ‘China Marathon’ and there’s a marathon on the Great Wall of China. My daughter was born in China so that’s added to my dream list of races. 🙂

    • October 6, 2010 6:26 am

I moved from Pittsburgh to Tennessee just over a year ago, and my dream race is still Pittsburgh-oriented. I’d love to run the Great Race 10K someday, after running each of the city’s neighborhood 5K’s that summer – the Greenfield Glide, the Brookline Breeze, the Run Around the Square, etc. Someday I’d like to make this happen, even if it means half a dozen weekend trips in the course of one summer.

  15. October 6, 2010 6:24 am

I have two. The Disney Princess 1/2 – with my sisters. That would be fun (but it’s not cheap).

The other kind of goes along with the Kona IM. It’s the Underpants Run – around the same time as the Kona IM. I don’t know if I’m that daring to run in my undies (well…it’s more the stretch marks on my stomach I’d care about covering).

If anyone wants to see more, check out this link to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8hUHmiEFA8). It just looks like a blast!

I would love to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Mardi Gras Marathon in New Orleans! I have serious doubts that I will EVER run a marathon, or even a half, but if I did that is the one I’d pick. It just sounds like so much fun!

A dream race for me would be one where all of my different running partners from over the years would be there together to run with me. I think that would be a blast. I’ve moved a bit (and some running partners have moved) and so I’ve run with a number of different people. They don’t know each other, but I think that they would get along fabulously.

Definitely Boston for me. Ever since my first marathon, the seemingly impossible qualifying times have kept me striving harder and harder. Back then I thought I’d BQ after 4-5 marathons – but I’m still a long way out timewise. I don’t want to do it as a charity runner, I want to earn it. Just to say I qualified, and to run that famous course that so many others have run, would be the absolute pinnacle of my running “career” – I tell my husband that I’ll retire and just run for fun once I’ve achieved that goal. For now, it still seems like a very Don Quixote-ish impossible dream, but it remains a dream all the same. And – in the meantime, it does keep me running and racing and gives me a reason to stay fit and leave Ben & Jerry in the freezer where they belong. There’s a ton of marathons on my “someday I’d love to…” list – but Boston is the only on I dream of.

I have a dream of running a marathon (only done 5ks so far) and in a few years, when I’m not working full time and going to school full time and could actually commit more time to training, I plan on running the Des Moines Marathon in Des Moines Iowa. It’s close to home so family could come and for me that is the best way to run a marathon. My friend and I always joke that if we did a marathon in Hawaii at least we could rest our weary feet on the beach for awhile instead of the snow in Iowa!

The Lobsterman Triathlon in Freeport, Maine! My family went to Bath & Phippsburg every summer and we would always stop in Freeport, sometimes 2 or 3 times. I thought “who is that crazy that they run for 26.2 miles?” Now that I run I understand why people do and I respect the race even more. I have friends that have run, they say there’s nothing quite like it. I want to run it-I want my family & friends to be able to coem and cheer me on. I want my kids to see thewir mom run & to see what dedication and perserverance can brign you. I want to qualify….right now I’m sizing up plans do my first full so that I can see how feasible a dream this is for me. I just completed my second half marathon on Sunday-as I was leaving i walked past some of the mararthoner who were on the final strectch to finishing. Until I met my husband, I forbade myself to “daydream”. I felt like it was a complete waste of time….if I was going to spend my time thinking of something, it darn sure better be a GOAL not just a dream. After meeting him (a fiction writer of all things!) dreaming is becoming easier. However, the longer I run, the more my dreams become goals. (Like the dream of finishing my first 1/2 was realized 9/25 at the WHM.) So…my dream race, that one day could become a goal race RIGHT NOW is conservatively set as the Venice marathon. Venice is my all time favorite city in the world, and the idea of running a marathon there is more than a little intoxicating!!

My first choice would have to be the Boston Marathon of course, which I WILL qualify for this year. I think I can. I think I can. I KNOW I can. However, my second, less obvious choice would be the Fargo Marathon. It’s where my family lives and I cannot think of a better venue to run a race that would have a family member cheering me on at every mile, a completely flat course that would be a sure Boston Qualifier and the brisk temps of late Spring in North Dakota. Perfect!

Everyone got No. “1” as their race number, it was not timed, and hundreds of kids, especially young girls, and their Moms and Dads ran the race. It was an excellent race and so wonderful to see so many young kids with their families doing something good, spending time together and having fun!

Thirteen years ago, at the age of 30, I was five years past my running-ending knee injury and walking an easy 10 minute mile. I had decided to train for the Honolulu marathon and was well on my way. A move across country and life got in the way and I put this away – carrying my training manual from state to state, back and forth across the country. Recently, a bunch of (RLA)Mothers have inspired me to consider it again. But now instead of getting to Hawaii, it’s the Marine Core Marathon. Maybe it’s the mystical idea of marines – but that seems like company that would inspire me to just finish it. So the new goal that is forming is to do a marathon before 50. I guess the RLAMers have made me want to be part of something bigger than me. Damn RLAMers!

I dream of running a marathon someday. I want to before I’m 40, and the countdown is getting closer (only 2.5 years left!). I would love to do it in Seattle just because it’s summertime (I’m off from work, kids are out of school) and it’s SO much cooler than where I live. And a totally different climate as well. If we’re dreaming, I might as well dream big and say that I’d qualify for Boston at said dream Seattle marathon and then feel obligated to go do it as well!

Reality check says that I’ll probably end up doing a local 5K for my 40th! 😉

My dream race was 15 years in the making. It came true this summer when I finished the Leadville Trail 100 mile run. It didn’t have exactly the outcome I’d planned, but it surely was a dream come true.

My dream race doesn’t have a name (yet) but it would involve a 50-degree morning in October, slightly overcast, and either a 10 miler or a half marathon AND (and this is what makes it my dream race), I would PR (1:40 for the 10-miler and under 2:00 for the half) with gas left in the tank. The cherry on top would be having my husband and 3 kids waiting for me at the finish line.

That would be my dream race. 🙂

I’m not yet ambitious enough to dream of Ironmans. I have maybe once or twice allowed the thought of a marathon to float through my head. But what I really am intrigued by is the Hood to Coast relay. I would love, love, LOVE to do this some year. I have very few friends who run right now, but I do have a few. I am thinking in a year or two I may propose this idea to some of them. One is a college friend and we live several states apart. How fun would it be to stage a get together in which we totally drain ourselves running a relay race? But it would be hard to work out the details with my two babies (okay, one of them is 2 and the other is nearly a toddler now, but still…) and the guilt I am sure I would feel at leaving them for a race. Or the guilt I would feel for leaving my husband to fend for himself with them (lies, we live 5 minutes from his parents) or his having to take the time off from work. Would he even be able to? Not to mention travel expenses, etc, etc. But this is why it’s a dream!

Tenzing Hillary Everest 1/2 Marathon. I trekked the same trails as the race 10 years ago this month and I would love to go back–it was an awesome experience. I choose the 1/2 because I don’t have a desire to do a marathon at sea level, much less at 17K.

Oh, the list is so long!! I always said NEVER to marathons, but after watching my sister complete the Goofy Challenge (and me with only my Donald Duck 1/2 marathon medal), I felt a bit jealous and put it in the back of my head… someday. Then after a few 1/2 marathons, I realized I needed to get the full marathon under my belt. Can’t decide which I would want to do – Boston, NYC, Nike Women’s, 26.2 with Donna Breast Cancer Marathon, or some exotic location like Paris! They all sound so exciting. Also would like to get a triathlon on that list too (but an IM sounds impossible to me- can’t wait to see what Dimity decides!)

After years of trying to convince my family and friends that I am not in fact crazy for loving to run, my little sister (okay she is 21 but she is still my baby sis 🙂 has finally started to run!! Though she doesn’t feel ready yet I would love to run any distance with her! That being said….I would love to run the Disney Princess half marathon! What girl doesn’t want to be a sweaty princess for a a day!! I would also love to do the Filthy 5k w/ her in Moorehead MN, basically it is a mud run w/ awards for the filthiest. 🙂 SO FUN!

I have SO many dream races!

    BQ and run Boston
    I want to get Goofy
    An Iron(wo)man
    Trail Ultra.
The impossible dream…I am even scared to write it… Leadville

Some will come true, some I may be a spectator or volunteer and some will just be dreams. Maybe some of my offspring may get to run them some day if I don’t. I wonder if I am already running what some of my mother’s mother’s mother (etc.) dreamed of?

But since then I’ve crossed the finish line of three Ironmans and will be doing it again in June in France. Your body is an amazing machine that allows you to push it beyond what you ever thought was possible. Thank you for your blog. I am a fan and look to it for inspiration everyday.

My dream race is Kona. I just did my first sprint tri, I have a few 1/2 marathons under my belt and I’m doing my first marathon this month. I have caught the bug in the worst way…….so what’s better than Hawaii? My in-laws are already on bored to babysit, although the catch is that they get to babysit IN hawaii 🙂

  62. October 6, 2010 8:30 am

My dream race…I will be running it on October 31st when I run my first marathon…the 35th Marine Corps Marathon. It’s going to be an amazing day. Like others, I never thought that I had it within me to complete such an amazing fete. With the help of my runner girls and my other training partner 😉 I don’t know if I would be gearing up for this race. But once I’m out on the course the race is all MINE…and I can’t wait!!!

  63. October 6, 2010 8:32 am

I suppose whatever the next race is, really.
    Is that lame?

Having a brother that can’t walk or talk makes one particularly grateful for being able to run, so I’ll take it however it comes, whether it’s a colda** half marathon in Travelers Rest, South Carolina in January or Kona or a local 5k.

For right now the next race is New York, and I’m certainly dreaming of it.

  64. October 6, 2010 8:33 am

I want to do a sprint tri, but have no ambitions of an ironman . . . I think I would drown!!

My dream race . . . the Disney Goofy Challenge!! I would love, love, love to do that! I think it would be fun for me and my hubby and kids. And, I would like to run it with someone, preferably my hubby. OK, well at the risk of sounding completely Disney-esque, my dream is to complete Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge at Disney World! I grew up in Central FL, right down the street from Disney, so it’s kind of my mothership =) To me, what better thing to do than to combine two things I adore: Disney and RUNNING! Other than Nike Women’s Marathon (can’t imagine it not being someone’s dream race after the article that started it all…) and Bolder Boulder (not really sure why, but I just have to for some reason) I don’t have a racing bucket list. I think I need one. In the meantime, my dream race is flat and I go really, really fast and feel great. The scenery is gorgeous and the crowds line the streets the entire way. 🙂

  69. October 6, 2010 8:44 am

I’d have to say I think the Disney Marathon (or Half Marathon, which would be more realistic, though still a stretch, for me) would be so much fun, and probably the ONLYway I’d convince my husband to take the family to Disney World in Florida. He’s not a huge Disney freak, like me, so there are many other places he’d rather go and spend that kind of money. But to me, getting to run through all the parks, meet all the characters, and just go to have a good time and not worry about a finishing time, just FINISHING would be the best vacation. (Not to mention with all the running, I’d probably worry a LITTLE less about all the eating-of-fun-vacation-food I’d be doing!)

I was lucky enough to realize my running dream this past spring: running in the Paris Marathon. I had been dreaming of it since I started marathon running 13 years ago. My husband and I went together, leaving our 2 little ones at home with grandparents. 40,000 runners (82 %men!!) set off charging down the Champs D’Elysees, passing all the spectacular sights of the city. But part of me wants to know if I can dig deep without having him there to hold my hand and push me when I need it. The only way I see him not racing with me is if it was a women’s race. My dream is Kona! I’m 38 now, with 2 little kids, a traveling husband and a part time job. I’m planning on a half ironman for next year and I’m hoping to qualify for Kona for my 50th birthday. Gotta love a long term goal.

My dream race would be running any half or full marathon with my two daughters. It would be great if it could be a girls only race, but any race would do. We haven’t run together since they left high school. Occasional runs with one or the other but not all three of us. That would be my dream.

My dream race would be running a marathon with my husband. He used to run cross country in high school but hasn’t run much since.

I’ve ran a half marathon with my mom and my little sister and it was one of most memorable experiences I’ve ever had.

Maybe after our five children are all running, he’ll join us.

My dream race….right now it’s the marathon I plan on doing next year–Twin Cities. Not glamorous, but it’ll be my first and that in and of itself seems like the dreamiest part. Plus it really has all that I need and could dream of at this point in my running life: it’s just blocks from my front door, it winds through neighborhoods where I have friends and plenty of good memories, easy access for my cheering section! Mile 25 passes right outside my mom’s home where she spent her last days- right where I imagine I might need a little extra oomph, there would be one. The route is gorgeous this time of year with the leaves changing, the spectators are enthusiastic, and I’ll be home in my ice bath in no time after crossing the line!
Ask me next year at this time about my dream race and maybe it will be one of the destination races–the Alaskan Cruise one sounds like serious fun!

It’s not really a race but then again I don’t really “race” very much. At least not against other runners. I am into ultra trail running now so the clock is really only there to remind you that you have to keep moving forward.

My dream is to through hike the Appalachian trail before I die. It may be something that stays on the bucket list and never gets done but it’s the possibility of it that keeps me going. And along the way all my trail ultras are simply training for the day I finally figure out how to get it done.

In my thirties, if you’d told me I would be running, I would’ve asked “from what?!” I was always very athletic, until I had my kids…instead of working out, I chased them around, cooked dinner, did laundry, and finished off their chicken nuggets before I crawled into bed at 8:30 each night. I literally ate my way through their toddler years!
Flash forward to 18 months ago, when turning the big 4-0 stared me right in the face. I was one overweight, irritated, grouchy, tired mother. I didn’t like me so much. I didn’t know what to do to get rid of all the yuck I felt…so, one night, I went for a walk. The next night, I went for a walk. And the night after that, and the night after that…and I felt better. So I kept going…eventually running instead of walking. Eventually, I did two 5K’s, dealt with a nasty hip injury, and kept running.
This past weekend, I joined five friends and finished my first half-marathon in Hershey, Pennsylvania. I walked a lot of it, but I also ran… I never thought I was capable of doing something like this! I stood at the start line and looked around at all of the other competitors and thought “What the hell am I doing here? Am I crazy??? Who am I kidding?!” The whistle blew, and off I went…one foot in front of the other. A few hours later, I crossed the finish line. Who’da thought I could do something like this??! Certainly not that tired, stressed, ball of grouch I was back then.
So, you ask what my dream race is? And, I have to answer that it’s the one I just did…the Hershey Half Marathon….because I did something I didn’t think I could do…I FREAKING FINISHED!!!

My husband and I have carried our children there several times for vacation and I enjoyed it probably more than my kids. The people of Disney do such an incredible job of thinking of every detail. My heart is probably beating faster just thinking about it. I expect that their marathon will be just magical. I know it will to me. The thought of getting to do my favorite thing in my favorite place is exciting. And I would get to run through ALL FOUR parks. Not that I run for bragging rights, but well, it’s one of the many bonuses. To go to such an amazing place and run an ultra marathon (87 K!), uphill, and survive. Maybe even finish in the time allowed. Now the reality is that it ain’t going to happen since I have three kids under 8 who need to be driven to/from school, preschool, soccer, football, gymnastics, lego class (yes, lego class!), coached in basketball, and fundraised for via the PTA. I’ve run a few marathons, the last being 10 years ago, but never more than 26.2. Pushing 40 years old. How could we fit a trip to South Africa for mom to run a race into the schedule? My dream race would be to run the Chicago Marathon and break 4 hours. Chicago was the first marathon I ran. I ran it on October 7, 2001, just a little under a month after the September 11th attacks. The emotions were running so high at the race. A lot of the field had pulled out, fearing to fly or be in a large group in a major city. As I stood at the start line and listened to the National Anthem, tears ran down my face. The fact that our country was attacked made me feel very vulnerable. As I ran the race, I was amazed at the support and the feeling of pride in our country shown by the massive amount of people out that day cheering us on. It is definitely an experience I will never forget.

As I finished the race (and cried once again) I promised myself I would go back someday and push myself even harder to reach a goal that I had set for myself. It is now 9 years later, and I still have not gotten back there. But, I will, and that will be when my dream comes true.

Kona is my ultimate dream race! I just finished the Augusta half ironman at the end of Sept so I know what the training is like !! I will do a full ironman one day just don’t tell my husband 😉 he witnessed the pain I went thru in Augusta!!!!

  188. October 6, 2010 9:21 pm

Of course my dream is Kona but for more than just 2 reasons it will never happen. Right now I’ll settle for Austin Marathon 2011.

  189. October 6, 2010 9:27 pm

Hm. I live in Florida, so have only run in pancake flay country. Nike Women’s sounds like a good combination of impossible sounding things awesome sounding things. 🙂

  190. October 6, 2010 9:28 pm

My dream race would be Ironman Canada. Yes, it is not nearly as exotic as some of the other names out there, but it is in my country and, if I’m going to do an Ironman, I’m doing it in B.C. first! And, in my dream race, my husband and boys would come out with me to cheer me on!

My dream race: well I would love to do a half iron…I don’t think I have a full in me and the other would be to do the London Marathon. And one year I would love to do ALL the RnR’s around the country for all that metal bling!

NYC Marathon. I got in this year on my first attempt at the lottery but had to bail due to plantar fascitis. That’s okay, I wasn’t exactly getting loads of sleep anyway since my 11 month old son wasn’t sleeping through the night for most of my training then and I usually run at 5am. But next year is my year!!!! 11/6/2011!!

My Dream Race is the Cape Epic in South Africa. This is also a Teamevent (two individuals build up a team) and a nature adventure. It`s the original battle, man against nature. Unfortunately it`s a long way from Germany and i don`t now when i will be able to put it in my vacation (and training) plan.

Dream race? Would have to be Kona Ironman. Those athletes are hard core.

I’ve done a century bike ride, 2 marathons and a sprint tri since turning 40 but would really need to step it up (big time!) in the open water swimming department to even dream about getting there. But it’s all about baby steps, right?

Any race I could run with my boys! My oldest is 9 and is considering a fun run mile while I do a 5 miler this November. It is on his 10th birthday! It would be a totally cool birthday present for both of us to run together in a race! I want to share the love I have developed for running with them. Having run nothing longer than a 5k, I am currently training for the Disney Princess Half in February. And while I am excited about that, I am tossing around several fulls in my head. NYC (grew up there); Chicago (sister lives there); St Jude (love the cause). I have also become fascinated, very much in Dimity fashion, with triathalons. SInce it has been years since my rear has hit a bike seat and even longer since I have been in a pool without children firmly attached, they will remain a fascination and a “someday” idea.

My dream race is to do an Ironman as well. I think that someday I might achieve it too:) I have a love/hate relationship with triathlons, well more accurately with bike training. I still cannot get to the point where I enjoy it. I think that as I get older, I become a little more patient with myself and with how I am feeling and I am able to overcome the frustration that sometimes occurs with biking in traffic:)Someday I will make it for an Ironman, although it might not be in Kona.

My dream would be a relay: Hood to Coast or the Ragnar Relay from Miami to Key West. Running with a 12-person “wolfpack” sounds like the most fun ever!

    • October 7, 2010 5:34 pm

I did “The Relay” from Calistoga to Santa Cruz this year. It was definitely a crazy experience. I think my team is going to do a Ragnar Relay next year (because I think Ragnar is more organized…) I’ve heard fabulous things about Hood to Coast, too. Definitely do a relay – it is an amazing adventure!

  211. October 7, 2010 5:32 pm

I actually signed up for Disney to do my first 5k (a year ago) because I really wanted it to be magical. I’ve now completed the Coast-to-Coast (Princess Half in March 2010 and Disneyland Half in Sept 2010) and am still a bit shocked that I’ve worked up to that distance. I definitely want to run a full marathon someday, and while an Ironman seems way too out of my grasp for now, I guess it doesn’t hurt to keep dreaming. It is cliche, but I really wish I could do Boston. Back in grad school my lab partner ran Boston and I had no idea what that really meant. Now that I do, I am in awe!

  212. October 7, 2010 5:57 pm

I’m running my first marathon (Nike SF Marathon) in 10 days…just had a little freakout typing that. I never thought I would run a marathon but I did a half marathon this year and thought, if I”m ever going to do a full, now is my chance. Keep up the momentum, right? So I signed up with two friends thinking I’d leave it up to the Nike gods whether I’d be running a marathon or not. And we got in! Even though I’m very nervous about those SF hills, and even more nervous because of the little problem of shin splints I’ve developed in the last month (OMG), I’m SO excited to challenge myself and finish. I think it will be a great race because of the weather, the gorgeous scenery, the people…and the Tiffany necklace given to me by a cute fireman is pretty good too. 🙂 I’m amazed at what my body has been able to do and I can’t wait to push it even further.

Mine would be the Spokane to Sandpoint relay. I love the idea of a relay with a team. This one looks particularly fun because many of the legs have themes: wigs, most flourescent, a team ride on a roller coaster. How fun!!! I told one of my running girlfriends about the race and she said, “that’s right up your alley.” She’s right. It is. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to do this race! I just need to find 11 other people who feel the same way! Oh, and maybe someone to watch my 4 boys while I do. That would be good, too. 🙂

I love to run, but unfortunately, I work so much as a single momma, just to put shoes on my 3 boys-that I’ve had to sacrifice buying myself new shoes for now until all their needs are met..

Every night after I would get in from working, I used to love to grab my ipod, my black lab and just walk/jog/run for 2 hours. I really miss it and would still do it, but the sneakers I have are about 4 yrs old now & there’s no tread left..Nor very safe to run in on the knees.. Guess I’ll have to ask Santa this year when I take the boys to see him. 😉

Right now my dream race is the San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon. I’m a San Diego native (and current dweller) and even before I was a runner this race was always intriguing. Now I have a few halfs under my belt and I hope in a few years to have the time to train for a full marathon. When I do run a full, this will be it! After that, I might chose to pursue a whole, but so far, I don’t have a specific one, and it’s not a dream of mine – I like my dreams to be reachable. 😉
