RLAM 12K’s of the Holidays: Day III!

December 10, 2010
by

I’m a planning kind of girl. Give me a to-do list, an itinerary for the day, a map from how to get from A to B and I feel safe, confident and capable. Give me an empty day, and, as hard as it is for me to admit this, it takes me a little while to embrace it.

Ditto for running. I can’t just go for a run. Before I head out, I have to have a length in mind, as well as a route. In nearly 20 years of running, I’ve never thought, wow, I feel so good, I’m going to add on a couple more miles or said I haven’t found my groove, let’s turn this off 2 miles early. I have a plan, and 97% of the time–only when injury derails me–I stick to it.

Because I’m so anal detail-oriented, I also know what I’ll need for fuel and always prepare accordingly. Out for more than 60 minutes? That means I’m taking water bottle in one hand and a gel in a pocket. (Or, more likely 2 because hey: today might be the day I just decide to click off a few more miles than planned. Pigs have flown, right?)

Wondering: who else is like me? Just as there are morning larks and night owls, Democrats and Republicans, cat people and dog people, there are also planners and wingers. Planners thrive on rules and structure, while wingers fly because they don’t set their own boundaries. As much as I wish I winged, I plan.

Bottles up: you'll barely notice you're clutching the GoLite Hydroclutch.

What are you when it comes to your running: a planner or a winger? Do you pick races far in advance, train always with structure and a Garmin, rarely vary your favorite routes? Or do you enter a race on a whim, sometimes forget your watch at home, use runs as exploration?

Your answer will throw your name into the ring to win one of 10 GoLite Hydroclutch water bottles. Both SBS and I love, love, love these 21-ounce, BPA-free, biodegradable bottles that snug to your hand comfortably. The design is smart–a key pocket on the adjustable holder–and the bottle holds enough water to make planners feel safe, and wingers still feel light. It’ll quickly become the bottle you’ll grow so attached to, you become ridiculously protective of it. No, you tell your kid, you may not use that bottle at camp/school/on your bike. It’s mine.

The eleven winners of the mini Larabars and the Larabar tee–and the healthy foods they choke down even though they’d rather not–are:

1. Rebecca: Kale, hands down. I know it’s extra green and extra ruffly, so for some reason that makes it extra good for me. I have found that I can chug a ton of it down when I make a green smoothie of it in the morning. Bananas, blackberries and a bit of orange juice helps the medicine go down.

2. Niki Harper: I cannot drink a glass of milk. Hate it. I like chocolate milk but can’t find a syrup/powder that doesn’t have a list of chemicals as the ingredients. So, I opt for chocolate soymilk…yum!

3. Terzah: The healthy food I make myself eat is….lo-sodium V8 vegetable juice. It’s not that I don’t like it–it’s OK–it’s just that I’d much prefer a tall glass of OJ. However, I stick with my morning V8, and sometimes have a second glass later in the day, because like Dimity I have no problem consuming fruit. It’s vegetables I have to make a plan for, and this juice is an easy way to get them.

4. Katie R: I dislike raw most green vegetables; however, I manage to eat a reasonable serving of them when they are seasoned with garlic salt.

5. RLR: Bananas. Something about the texture – ew. But I do eat them, especially when they are on the post-run snack buffet….

6. K: Water. Seriously. I have found since my son was born that there is a very, very fine line between being properly hydrated and needing one of his diapers. I know 8-10 glasses is good for me but I wish it weren’t…

7. Elizabeth: What healthy food do I eat that I would rather not? Salad. Yawn. Present me with a bowl of cut up raw vegetables and I’ll eat it because I know I need those leafy green suckers — but really — boring. If I had my druthers, I’d deep fry EVERYTHING.

8. Amy Johnson: I really have to force myself to eat yogurt. I burned myself out on yogurt in highschool, where I had this for lunch pretty much every day. I typically will throw it in a smoothie drink, because I know it’s so good for me.

9. Tiffany: Basically vegetables of all kinds. I have learned that roasting them in the oven though with a little olive oil and sea salt goes a long way in helping them taste better. My favorites are asparagus and brussel sprouts cooked that way.

10. Carolie: Tomatoes… I can eat them in sauces but never in a salad. If I sprinkle with a little salt and Olive oil I camn get them down.

11. Suzanne: I pretty much like everything. There are a few foods that I am not a big fan of–kale, tomatoes, celery, and onions–but I wouldn’t put them in the “hate” category.

Congrats, ladies! Please e-mail us at runmother at gmail dot com with your address, as well as what tee-shirt size you want (S-XL). We’ll give you about 48 hours to claim your Larabar love, and if we don’t hear from you, we’ll pay it forward to another winner.

I am a planner. With limited time to run due to the kids and hubby’s schedule, I have to know where I’m going and how long it’ll take me!

  2. December 10, 2010 4:10 am

I am a little of both I think, I guess I try to be flexible but every time I am flexible with my training, with my work, with my family, I wish I had planned! I do not sign up for races last minute though. Need that carrot for training!

I used to be such a planner. Nothing happened without a plan. But that has changed in the last year. I still plan my route and distance but it Is not set in stone anymore. The freedom to deviate from the plan has been so liberating!

Seeing as I am only just starting out running, I would say flexible but would be better as a planner. I think I might go for a run then something gets in the way and so I don’t. The days when I plan the night before to head out in the morning are the days I get out there and get my butt moving that bit more towards thinness.

I am a planner, but only with running. I always map were, how far, and when I am running. I never just go out there and run. But in all other areas of my life, I wing it! So maybe that creates a nice balance in me!

  10. December 10, 2010 4:39 am

i’m an embarrassingly super planner. I actually have a 2011 calendar printed and ready to go with at least one race/tri in each month…..oh. i do that for my husband too.

  11. December 10, 2010 4:40 am

I like to offend that I’m a planner. I even have an automated training plan that emails me with the workout of the day!! I have gone one step further with it and purchased a training plan that would set me up for my next planned race-so the mileage and even cross training for x number of weeks pre-race are all figured out based on race day.

But….I have decided to stop fighting it and embrace my “wings”!! I AM A WINGER! I have signed up for races the day before (sometimes the day of)–the “only ” time I sign up in advance is if there’s a significant danger in it filling up. I usually decide on the number of miles I’ll run today based on who I’m running with, where I feel like going or how many I need to get in so that I’m increasing (or sometimes decreasing) my weekly total. (right now my next planned race is RNR (half) NOLA, but just after that I’m looking at a very tough 25K trail run–McKay Hollow– so I’m increasing my trail time but also getting in some road miles). I cross trin if I’m hurting and feel like running would do more harm than good, other days (when I’m feeling spunky) I run then bike right after.

And yes, I’m like that in all areas of my life!! That’s why I don’t get as much done as my friend who keeps a spreadsheet of her day, but I have great fun, until I miss out on things I’ve forgotten or get overwhelmed because its time to run a half marathon and my longest run has only been eight miles because I didn’t plan (or follow the plan that was already in place!).

However, things generally work out just fine….plans stress me out every day, not having one (or following one that is there) just gives me moments of freak out!!

That’s supposed to say “I’d like to pretend”….

  12. December 10, 2010 4:53 am

I’m 100% a planner. (In running and pretty much everything!) I can be flexible on my route and distance – I run with a club and sometimes don’t know these variables in advance – but I always know what I need to accomplish on a weekly basis and I’ll make the workouts fit in.

I am here to represent the wingers! Before I became a mother, I was a planner. Now that I’m a mother, I’ve found that I just can’t be a planner for everything. If I insisted on being a planner for running, I’d end up frustrated and would never run any races! My running life is much like Dana’s a few posts above me. I’ve learned to love it! My only exception is marathon training – I have too much respect (uh, fear!) of the distance to completely wing marathon training!

Definitely a planner when it comes to running. I’m rehabbing an injury (pelvic stress fracture and torn adductor) and while I’m thrilled to be back out there, it’s killing me to only be able to plan a few weeks ahead. I like to have my training plan all mapped out on a calendar that I hang right next to my computer at work. I map out routes before hand, and usually even plan out which running clothes I’m going to wear which days. I’m not this organized about anything else in my life, that’s for sure!

I am totally a planner. I don’t have a race until April (which I really should find one, I am in So Cal and this is my season to run!), so I am following a training plan for 8 weeks. I LOVE the plan, and the challenges it brings me.

  18. December 10, 2010 5:32 am

Hate to admit it, but I’m a planner. I often try to play myself off like I’m very fly by the seat of my pants…but, honestly, I’m not. However, i am also not a repeat router. i run a different, planned, route every time i run.

  19. December 10, 2010 5:33 am

Planning is part of the fun for me. I love maps and plotting out routes as well as imagining what unknown race courses are like by how they look on a map. It’s rare when I can just wing it on a run but those moments have always been nice too.

  20. December 10, 2010 5:37 am

I have always been a planner. I like to have goals and a clear plan to meet those goals. Being a mother has taught me to be more flexible, and despite my preferences, the reality is that I wing it a great deal of the time – such is the nature of the game. But when it comes to running, I do feel like I have more control, and so I take advantage of it.

  21. December 10, 2010 5:39 am

I’m a planner often forced to wing it…..I love/need the structure of having a race in mind and a training plan on paper but I rarely wind up following the plan exactly. Old injuries flare up, work gets in the way, the bed is just too appealing some mornings…..figuring out when to push and when to cut myself slack is an ongoing challenge for me – my main injury bugaboo is pushing before my body is ready for it, and I’m still paying years later. (and I occasionally wind up in a fun looking 5k for no real training purpose, though I’ve passed on races that didn’t fit my plan) Last cycle I erred on the side of caution, and it worked out okay.

I’m in-between too. I usually have a mile goal, but I occasionally add or subtract depending on how I feel. For longer runs, I plan the route, for shorter, I just head out the door and see where the mood takes me.

  24. December 10, 2010 5:56 am

I am a planner! I plan races well in advance because they motivate me. And I like to have my schedule to look at for weeks before the race. Although this is sometimes overwhelming, I love clicking off runs as a I train. Great feeling of accomplishment!

I am a wing it sorta girl. I only have to know how much running time I need to get in. Then I just head out and go. We have a lot of great trails to run and sometimes when I leave I don’t have a trail in mind, I just run which ever one seems like fun or is the least busy. I hate to plan too much.

I have to be a planner. 2 kids (3 &1), doesn’t make it too easy to just go out and run. I have my 2011 race schedule tentatively planned for the year. I know there will be additions and subtractions, but the big races I like to register early (and pay less!) My weekday short runs are pretty routine…only so far I can go at 5am! Weekends I try to very them a little bit depending on how long I have. When I’m not officially training, the length of my long run is all dependent on how the run is feeling.

  30. December 10, 2010 6:02 am

I run more consistently when I have a schedule and training for a specific marathon. I chose my marathons in advance but smaller races I just run if I find one close enough. I run different routes all the time. I like to switch things up and it also depends on who watches my son for my run.

I will tell you where we will run, how far and what time to be there (and where we are having lunch afterwards). But I have a wild side when it comes to trails, I attribute it to my ADD, to combat boredom I am an explorer. I am always looking for a new trail, and willing to try just about anything at least once. If you’re going to run with me you may have to do a little trail blazing, but don’t worry – we’ll get the mileage in and rest assured I will go home and analyze the hell out of my Garmin data.

In-between— I like the structure sometimes, but also like the life of running for fun, freedom and escaping. I’d say 60% of my running is structured (schedule, planned miles, times, races, etc), but 40% is unstructured which after a long stretch of structure is refreshing and gives a whole new life to my running.

  36. December 10, 2010 6:07 am

On the other hand, I have been known to leave my watch and lots of other important things at home on race day (thankfully nothing like my shoes!). I feel like I should be more dedicated to the plan to actually see it through one of these times, but on the other hand, I can finish races happy, smiling and wanting to do another so I’m not convinced I need to try harder or necessarily improve to enjoy running.

Those usually aren’t my best runs, but they’re better than not running at all.

  58. December 10, 2010 7:08 am

Most of the time I am winger. I don’t use a set training plan, just run what I want when I want. I try to make sure I get longer runs in especially if I plan to run a longer race. I also love speed work so I make sure to get in those workouts too.

  63. December 10, 2010 7:16 am

Oh such a planner! I plan out my runs and workouts on Sunday or Monday for the entire week, and it really ruffles my feathers when I have to start altering things! I definitely map my runs before I leave to make sure they are the approporiate distance I want to accomplish and God forbid I cut them short! I too rarely feel so great I just want to keep on going! I always have a training plan for future races, even before I register. I find it keeps me motivated to get out and run on a schedule and holds me accountible.

I am a huge planner. I am just like you in that I know when I am going to run, how far I am going to run and exactly where I am going to run. I can’t stand not knowing where I am at and running any course and trying to figure out how to add miles or take off miles on my runs. It drives me crazy and if it is NOT planned it will not happen and if it does, well it turns into a 1 mile run. I any have enough energy to actually run my planned route and not to be figuring how where to go and how long to run. Love your blog! So glad I found you!

I’m definitely a planner! My friend and I do our long runs on the weekends and I always map out our route beforehand and she goes along with the flow. I don’t like to just “wing” it b/c I like to have “milestone” points in my run where I think “Ok, I’ve made it 6 miles that that’s a potty break at McD’s…only X amount of miles to go until I get to the park and then only 2.5 miles home from there, etc.” I like to know ahead of time!

I am a bit of both. I am a planner when I have a race on the schedule. I print out my training plan and try stick to it. (Sometimes it is hard to stick to being a SAHM to a 3 yo and a 1 yo.) However, when there is not a race on the horizon, I wing it. I fit my runs in whenever I can…also running whatever I feel like at the time. I do still try to keep a LR and a speed workout each week. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

I found when I trained for my first marathon that having every run planned didn’t work for me because I’d get frustrated when I wasn’t able to get a run in or had to change the workout. Now I’m a lot more flexible, having set goal runs I want to get in during the week but allowing some lee way as to when I complete them. And I understand that missing one day isn’t the end of the world! And while I do plan goal races long in advance, I’ll jump into fun runs (especially when traveling) on a whim.

I don’t use a Garmin or watch, and I have been known to sign up for shorter events on a whim (think race-day registration). If I have a run scheduled, I often will just go where the wind blows me rather than mapping out a route in advance. Running is my time to break free of schedules and deadlines, so I generally tend to enjoy it more just winging it!

I am definitely a planner, especially when it comes to running. You pretty much described me to a T in your second paragraph. This has become glaringly obvious to me in the last few weeks, when I was sidelined in the middle of training for my first 10K due to to horrid shin splints. I had to toss the training plan and dreams of registering for my first 10K this month out the window, take a short rest, and decrease my mileage. I was doing okay getting myself out to run every other day, only going 1-2 miles, until Thanksgiving when me and the kids got sick and I took a whole week off from running. And I haven’t really been able to get back into it since. Without a training schedule to follow, I feel lost. And instead of getting out there anyway, more often than not I find myself making excuses to stay inside in the warmth of my house. I need a new plan. And I need it bad.

  140. December 10, 2010 10:21 am

I am a little of both. I try to plan ahead so that I can train appropriately and budget my races, definitely have my favorite courses and feel almost naked without my Garmin. But I will also mix up (uh, ruin according to some?) my training plans for swapping out 2 miles for 8, or 8 for two, and both half marathons I have run have been with less than a week’s notice, and not exactly the training base one should have (read: months off, only short runs in weeks prior).

  141. December 10, 2010 10:24 am

I am a planner sort of. I won’t go over my miles planned (unless my husband is with me and pushes me) and I generally finish my miles planned, unless I am hurting.

I live in Spokane, WA and we host the world’s largest timed running event, Bloomsday, so that’s always on the calendar. But I also wing a whole lot! My cousin will call and say “hey, there’s this run and it looks awesome, let’s do it,” and I will end up signing up days beforehand. Having a little randomness keeps it fun for me.

I do find, sadly, on the days that I don’t have a great plan or tell myself “just a few miles today”, I exceed expectations.

You know it’s funny because in life in general I am definitely a planner. I have ongoing love affairs with lists, excel spreadsheets and maps. However, as I read through this I realized that I am nearly completely the opposite when it comes to running. Perhaps running is my way to be what I can’t seem to be in “real life”. Perhaps that is my chance to let down my guard and learn to just fly by the seat of my pants. I love to go “exploring” on my runs and enjoy varying my route frequently. Which is why I finally invested in a Garmin. Mapmyrun was too annoying trying to add all my twists and turns every time! I do, however, have a general plan (ie: this week I will run on such and such day for so many miles aiming for this pace) BUT I guess I have learned that it’s ok to veer from it and change it up a bit. If I’m out for a slow run and feel good I just might kick it up a notch, just because. If I’m aiming for 4 miles and feel myself faltering through, I have no problem stopping at 2. I’ll kick myself for it later and feel crappy about it but I know I’ll redeem myself on the next one. So to make a long answer even longer – I guess I’m a winger for running so that I can use all the rest of my energy to plan out the rest of my life! 🙂

Planner! I plan my runs according to the race I’ve signed up for. But, being a planner is a complete detriment; if I don’t have a future race to plan my runs around, I tend not to run at all.

I’m a planner, but that’s largely due to how I started running. I only began running back in June and my husband had me pick a goal (5k at the end of September). Of course, by the end of September my goal had changed (5k to half marathon in October) and I was on a training plan. I’m still on a training plan (Phx RnR half in Jan) and never go running without my watch or without knowing how long I’m going to run!

Sometimes would have 10miles planned, but the weather was nice- so decided to cut it short at 7miles and go home and play with the kiddos. Really, more like trying to find excuses to cut it short. I like to wing it – mostly. Right now marathon training hasn’t started so I just run what I feel like running with no set paceor exact mileage in mind. I used to run with my Garmin all the time but in the last year or so I’ve been running a lot with just a watch and not stressing about my pace. When January gets here and I start training for my April marathon and I’ll wear my Garmin for speedwork and pace runs. For now though I’m running for fun.

  225. December 10, 2010 12:51 pm

i think i’m both… i have a regular route that i begin with, then add miles as necessary up to about 10. my long runs are mapped out ahead of time so i can find potties & water easily. but when i’m not training (like right now), i tend to head out with a basic sense of how many minutes i want to run, then just explore. it’s especially nice to be randomly running & find new paths… but that’s when i need extra water & gel!

Lately, I’m lucky to get 2 seconds to myself, so I take my runs when/if I can get them and just run until I’m half way through my alloted time and then turn back. Those are the days I just get out to go, go, go far and fast. Because they are few an dfar betwenn. Which my body seems to dislike. I also don’t take my phone or inhaler (sort of stupid on that part).

I plan and register for races about a month in advance and choose based on name…I know, my real reason. What can I say I like a kitchy name. lol I don’t cancel if I can’t find my groove, but I have been known to squeak out a couple of extra miles at the end. I pick my route ahead of time and show my hubby where they’re saved on my MapMyRun account so he can find me if needed.

I have heard of that rare and exciting beast called a spontaneous runner, but I’ve yet to spot one in its native environment. As such, I’m a planner. Check the weather, plan the outfit, test the light, charge the Ipod, chart my route on the computer, set my alarm, and lord help me if anything goes wrong!

Planner. I do best if I am following a training schedule. I am already starting to lay out the races I want to do next spring/summer/fall so I can space/plan/train accordingly.

Spreadsheet training plan, NikePlus goal setting , time, pace mileage counting PLANNER. Need the accountability of setting an expectation for myself and sticking to it. Reduces the early am or late pm negotiation inside my head -too tired, really should clean the kitchen, pack lunches, throw in laundry….. spreadsheet says run.. I say OK how far how fast.

I have just started running, so I’m a planner. I have a plan in place to train for a 1/2 Marathon and the Cherry Blossom 10M if my group gets picked in the lottery.

Planner – I review different training plans, calculate when to start training for a race, what other races I can do in the meantime, and plot out my training in Excel. Then after each run I can download from my Garmin. A careful plan and data to review makes me happy.

I am a part planner, part winger. Planner in that I have to schedule my days times to run. I am a winger in that I run wherever the wind takes me.

I am absolutely a planner. I have to have a training plan, which I check every night before going to bed for the next day. And as soon as I finish running, I have to recored what I did on my log so I have a goal for the next day’s run. No plan, no run, no good.

I am definitely a planner. I like to know how far I need to go and turn around and run home! I’m too anal not to HAVE to know exactly how far I have gone and what my time is!

I have a Garmin. I get ready and head out the door. Sometimes I map a run online to get an idea of where to go, or head to the Pinellas Trail and run with a friend. Some planned, some not. Depends.
Have been running since March and have done some 5k’s and completed a half marathon.

I’m a little bit of both. I plan at home, but when I travel, I use my runs to explore and do not stick to a set distance or pace. I allow myself to stop and look at things. I love those runs.

I guess I am a planner. I know pretty much how far I am going to run before I go out. I know the route I am going to run, too. I am kind of a creature if habit and tend to stick to a few routes with small deviations depending on my distance goal for the day. It is therapeutic to me and makes me feel like I have accomplished something when I complete my goal. Even if I accomplish nothing else in a day, if I can set out with a goal to cover a certain distance and reach that goal, I get a huge sense of satisfaction.

For the most part I’m a “winger.” I am pretty good about sticking to a mileage plan, but I take the rest…route, pace, etc., as it comes!

Uh, planner. All the way. My facebook page actually has the quote “I have CDO. It’s like OCD, but all the letters are in order like they should be.” I found it on a tee shirt… and thought, “That’s ME!” Rather proudly. 🙂

I am a planner. 2011 is already planned with all the races I intend to participate, and I like the idea of a defined goal, as running just because it’s good for you doesn’t cut it for me. I need a deadline, and with 3 kids in 3 years, I need stay organized or my kids will organize my life for me!
I keep track of my workouts on the calendar on the computer, as well as a printed version that I keep with me all the times.
My friends harrass me about my organization, but they are always glad not to miss a deadline for signing up for a race because they don’t have to plan since I usually do it for them!

Big time planner, for each week’s run schedule, upcoming races, each run’s route, what I wear, eat, drink, who is coming, who is NOT coming…..I think it is a type-A/virgo thing?!? But it is the only way that I can enjoy the whole experience.

I’m a planner who aspires to wing it. I plan, and this gives me a structure and a mission to drive me forward. But often, out on the trails, I deviate from my expected courses and explore, reach, and glory in the innumerable found treasures of the unknown paths; the beauty of a sunrise, a brisk wind, or the sound of the birds in the morning. I aspire to winging it in every step I take.

I’m a planner. Even when I think I’m being flexible, I’m probably be a planner. For example, when I “spontaneously” decide to do a race that’s 3-4 weeks out, chances are good that I’d had the idea of a race of that length in the back of my mind, and had been training accordingly.

That said, having children and work and life forces me to be flexible with my schedule, so it’s not unusual for a long run to be shortened or a short run to be lengthened to accommodate my schedule and the mileage called for in a training plan. Maybe that’s still planning though: planning to be flexible?

Planner . .. I’m a planner. If I go out for a run without a plan I will more likely cut it short than extend it.
