12K’s of the Holidays: Tag Fünf

December 13, 2010
by

I–SBS–write about gear for a living, yet I never tire of trying new stuff. I’m currently writing reviews of athletic shoes, workout DVDs, running socks, and baby car seats (nope, not testing those myself!). Not only do I love poking, prodding, and playing with new things, but it’s fun seeing testers trying stuff as well. Some folks get absolutely giddy when I tell them I’ve got a new pair of trail running shoes for them to test or a pair of socks. (Dimity’s husband, in fact, typed, “Goodie!” to me when I recruited him via email for some last-minute runs in some socks.)

It’s no wonder, really: It’s amazing the effect a new something-something can make on a run. A new iPod Shuffle, some new running gloves, a fresh tee, or even a pair of speed laces. The one-foot-in-front-of-the-other motion is identical, the miles the same distance, the hills still as steep, the cold just as sharp on the lungs, yet with a new piece of gear, it all seems so new and fun.

What gave you a spring in your step on a run lately? It doesn’t have to be gear—it could be a sympathetic running partner, an engaging podcast you just downloaded, an unclaimed dollar bill on the sidewalk, or your 4th-grader biking alongside of you.

Sole socks: as comforting to your soles as running is to your soul.

Your response will put you in the hopper for a chance to be one of eight winners to win two pairs of performance Sole Socks. Winners will take home a two-pack combo of the ultra-thin lightweight sport, which are great for warmer runs, and the super soft dual layer, which have two layers to keep blisters at bay. Dimity and I first started crushing on these silky-smooth, lightweight socks when we were training for our 2007 marathon. Although they’re great technical socks, our favorite part is the “Love + Thanks” which is stitched into on the inside cuff every sock–a perfect sentiment to feed your feet and mind as you head into the world.

Ready to get a kick out of these SOLE socks? What has you springing on runs these days?

_____________________________________________________

Winners of the 9 Headsweats Ultralite Hats–and their (previous) favorite pieces of go-to gear are–

1. Annet Maurer: My new sports bra! Although it is much bigger than I anticipated when I got fitted (figured I’d be a C, maybe a D, and it was an E!!), it holds them in like no one’s business – they aren’t going anywhere. It was the RLAM book that told me #1 was a good bra and yup, it is what has made the difference in feeling good when running – whereas before I was sore and uncomfortable, now I can just concentrate on getting more fit. I’ll need another one soon but will hopefully be down a size or two before the next one!!

2. eep: I have a great pair of socks that I got as part of the swag from my very first race, a Thanksgiving 8K. They are horribly ugly; since they are Thanksgiving socks they are burgundy and gold, and have a turkey on the ankles. They match nothing in my running wardrobe. But they are comfortable and remind me of my first race.

3. Sandi: I can’t run without my IPod and I love my new “Badass Mother Runner” shirt that I purchased from this site! (S. Dressel)

4. Anitra: I always have my fuel belt palm holder. Though my favorite is not clothing or gear it is my James Avery Necklace that says Mommy. Have to have it on.

5. Rhonda: I LOVE, LOVE my new New Balance WT-100′s. I have been coveting these at the outlet, and (shhh, don’t tell my husband) bought them before my 790′s were worn out. My justification–I could use a pair of black sneakers to wear with jeans, and the 790′s are perfect!

6. Jules: My sunglasses! I feel naked if I run without them!

7. Barb Anderson: My Sugoi running tights that are wind resistant! These were not cheap, but I am so happy I splurged last year as they are really helping out with this early winter weather we are having!

8. Lauren: There’s a long-sleeve tech T I’ve had since 2006 or 2007 that is perfectly long enough for my height and my long arms — I love it and wear it as often as possible! The funny thing is, I never even ran that race — the director absconded with all the funds and was never heard from again!

9. Emeliee: My black REI gloves. They are slim fitting and stylish, but keep my fingers toasty in any type of weather. Living in Utah, they are absolutely necessary, though for only about 5 months of the year. The best part is that they are super easy to throw in the washer when they start to smell stinky from all the sweaty head wipes they endure!

Congrats, congrats! E-mail us at runmother at gmail dot com with the words “Headsweats winner” in the subject line and your address in the e-mail, and we’ll get them a rollin’ on out to you.

A spring in my step recently came with my eight marathon and my first BQ! It took me awhile, but I finally got there. Lots of hard work, tempo runs, 50-60 mile weeks and I made it. I qualified on November 7 and I’m still feeling the glow!

My three kids definitely put that spring in my step this week- as I left for my run I looked back to see their smiling faces in the kitchen window and heard my three-year-old say “Go Mom Go! I know you can do it!” Priceless.

I have to say I love listening to The Marathon Show when I’m running solo. It keeps me motivated, entertained, and inspired. Gear-wise, I LOVE my Smart Wool socks-they wick moisture, but are very warm and cushiony!

It’s dumb dumb dumb… but it worked. Last winter I kept going out on runs and my top would be toasty from the layers but my calves and ankles would be cold. What I needed, I decided, was a pair of leg warmers. Trouble is I haven’t owned a pair of leg warmers since 1982. So, I went through my family’s outdoor gear bin and found a pair of my husband’s thick, tall, wool socks. I slit the seams out of the toes, pulled those puppies all the way up to my knees (over my running pants, of course) and I was good to go. It was delightful to run with snuggy feeling legs. Cut to Saturday… my first run this year with the faux-legwarmers…. that good feeling has not faded a bit! Maybe that good feeling is just the cheapskate in me delighting in saving some money…. but I think it’s the wool.

a recent trail run with one “old” friend and one “new” friend. The three of us have registered to run an 11 mile trail race together in Feb ’11. Trails are new to me and I hardly ever run with friends, so this was invigorating for more than one reason. The weather was perfectly chilly, running the trails were fun and surprisingly easier on me than I expected, having someone to chat with made the run seem shorter, AND… I had a major (tire) blow out on the highway on my way to meet my friends (but made it to the shoulder just fine), so I had some stress to work through.

Suddenly an old Girl Scout song plays through my head: ♫ Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.

Since it has been so cold and dark when I run I decided to run on the treadmill which has been tough. To put a spring in my step I play math games in my head and try to beat times, calories, distance by pushing myself with speed and incline to beat times. It usually keeps me pumped during that run and the next. If that doesn’t work I listen to defying gravity from the wicked soundtrack and it always pushes me just bit further.

Some very fun music my husband heard reviewed on NPR! The artist is Girl Talk and he does these awesome, very upbeat mashup-style remixes between older songs from the 60s, 70, 80, 90s, 00s, and rap. So you might have Elvis Costello’s “Tenderness” with rap, or Cindy Lauper’s “Time After Time” with rap, or even some Bruce Springsteen with rap. And the rap is completely over the top offensive but the beats are so great that they keep me moving. They have been perfect for these colder days and nights out in the road.

And reminding myself about that perks me up on those days when I don’t feel into my run. The only person placing demands on me is…me! Can’t get that anywhere else. Makes me almost giddy.

New shoes are definitely a boost for quite awhile. New running outfit. Signing up for a race. What really got me inspired this weekend was running with my husband. He is a 7 minute or less per mile runner. I am more of a 10 minute miler. This weekend we had lots of snow and wind. Getting out to run alone was not an easy thing. My husband sacrificed his time, and warmth, to run at my pace! On Saturday, he ran his long run of 13 and came back to run 6 more miles with me a several hours later. He truly showed his support of my running this weekend.

Got a new pair of running shoes and bought a couple of new hoodies that help get me excited about braving northern Michigan’s snow and cold — major blizzard going on here now! Also got some new SmartWool socks. But maybe the biggest reason: signing on for a spring marathon and meeting up with a local coach to help me train and achieve my goal. Super excited/scared-in-a-good-way about doing this — it’s a combo birthday/Christmas present to me, from me.

Having someone to run with definitely helped on my last run. I live in Michigan and it’s quite chilly here. Just haven’t had the motivation to get out there in the cold. If I hadn’t scheduled a time with my running partner I surely would have stayed home cuddled up on the couch. I needed to get that run in and that was probably the only way it was going to happen.

I was at a friends house watching the movie 180 South and at some point in the movie as they are talking about the joys of being outside and how much more rewarding it is to DO rather than OBSERVE I realize that I would rather be out running. So I went and grabbed my ever present gear bag from my car, switched into running gear, realized I didn’t have the right socks, decided I would survive a run with the wool ones I had one and went outside into a surprisingly glorious day to run in an area I’d never run before for a length of time and distance that I’m unsure of and felt so good during and after.

It is getting cold, so a day that is a little warmer (somewhere above 25F is nice), or a little less windy really motivates me to get out for a run. I am cautious about running in icy conditions, especially when a fall or injury would mean either a long limp home, or my hubby packing up all four kids to come and get me, so I run on the treadmill if conditions are particularly bad, but I LOVE running outside, so I jump on it when I have the chance.

Every new volume of the “Glee” soundtrack, downloaded onto my iPod Shuffle, makes the next run a lot more fun. Also, ever since winter came, the discovery that my summer running skirts look super cute over running tights–and add an extra layer of warmth for my rear end–has made me very happy and more eager to bound out the door. 🙂

    it must rock out with some fun;
Perhaps a tune like no other,

2 things have been putting a spring in my step lately. 1) My hubby came with me on my last run. He doesn’t do the cold and actually hates running but does it sometimes to keep me company and because he knows it is a good workout (but he still hates it). Luckily it was only a 4 miler and he is in good enough shape to hang with me even though he hasn’t run since the Run Thru Hell (MI) on Halloween 5k. It is always nice to have him come with me. 2) I’m discovering that with the right gear, I CAN run outside some in the winter. I used to always get sick if I tried. But I’ve been running for almost a year again now and something is different this time. I don’t feel like I’m hacking up a lung after every run. And, with the right clothes (layers) I’m not cold! So this discover has me geeked to run outside this winter (except on the ice we currently have thanks to the recent snowstorm).
