12K’s of the Holidays: Halfway There!

December 14, 2010
by

Liza, a pink-cheeked, blue-eyed friend of my older daughter, Phoebe, is a girl after my own heart. When Liza was in first grade, she often did solo laps around the playground blacktop rather than swinging from the monkey bars or zipping down the slide with her pals. At the end of that grade, she ran the 2-mile Doggie Dash with a greyhound’s intensity. On the soccer field, Liza often seems more eager to run up and down the field than dribble the ball or shoot goals.

Liza came over on Saturday to decorate holiday cookies with Phoebe and some of her pals. After my 14-mile run on what turned out to be one of the rainiest day in 2010 in Portland (no small feat!), I had rolled, cut, and baked sugar cookies and gingerbread men—easily 150 cookies. The girls dove into decorating with gusto, calling for more frosting within minutes. At one point, Liza showed me a tree cookie she’d festooned with green frosting, red orb and snowflake sprinkles, and a blazing yellow star on top.  As she surveyed the scores of unfrosted cookies, she wondered aloud, “What is our goal here?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. Come on: What third-grader thinks about goals in such a concrete, matter-of-fact way? Then I answered my own question: The one who is destined to grow up to be a devoted runner: Liza.

Banana-flavored hydration in a tube. What'll they think of next?

To paraphrase Liza, what’s your goal with running? It can be short-term (to break 30 minutes in that Jingle Bell 5K next weekend) or long term (reduced risk of heart attack or osteoporosis anyone?). Lengthy (a marathon in 2011) or more immediate (a mile without walking). Tell us, and 7 of you will each win 6 tubes of nuun (one of each flavor: tri-berry, lemon lime, orange ginger, kona cola, citrus fruit and banana). Nuun, as we’ve stated a couple times before, is our absolutely most fave electrolyte replacement drink. (Electrolytes: the salt and other minerals you lose when you sweat. Often, headaches after a long run aren’t just because of dehydration; they’re also because of electrolyte loss. Drinking a couple bottles of nuun-laced water after marathon training runs helped Dimity, scientifically determined to be a heavy sweater, kill her headaches.)

Several times a day—always before my morning run and in the afternoon at my desk—I drop one of these low-calorie, slightly sweet tablets into a bottle of plain water, wait a few minutes for it to fizz, then chug-a-lug the tasty, restorative drink it has become. If you haven’t already, we know you’ll become addicted to these magic tablets, as Liza already is to running.

8 winners of the two-pack combo of Sole Socks–and the thing that puts a spring in their step–are:

1. Sarah: The thought of alone time puts a spring in my step and gets my butt out the door. Running is a time for me to be in charge. My route, my pace, my music. That makes me very happy. And reminding myself about that perks me up on those days when I don’t feel into my run. The only person placing demands on me is…me! Can’t get that anywhere else. Makes me almost giddy.

2. Dawn: My inspiration is my 9 month old son. While he is fighting cancer, I find running a good way to keep my mind off things.

3. Sarah Carlin: There’s nothing better than remembering a song that you love, but haven’t heard in a while, transferring it to your iPod, and hearing it when you run. I tend to listen to it over and over before I skip to the next one.

4. Shannon: Every new volume of the “Glee” soundtrack, downloaded onto my iPod Shuffle, makes the next run a lot more fun. Also, ever since winter came, the discovery that my summer running skirts look super cute over running tights–and add an extra layer of warmth for my rear end–has made me very happy and more eager to bound out the door.

5. Beth B.: My hubby got me a new iPod Shuffle for my birthday (in November) since my old one went kaput; so now i’m able to enjoy the tunes again while i’m running! That helps!

6. A Slice of Wife: I love new gear. Lately it’s been my argyle/heart pattern arm warmers from runningskirts.com. They are very “Alice in Wonderland” to me and I love wearing them on trail runs.

7. Chaya: A recent tempo run that had me leaving my (male) running partner in the dust! It gave me a huge boost of confidence for last Friday’s half-marathon, where I did indeed set a big PR.

8. Jennifer Schantz: I just received a b.day gift subscription to a running magazine…Something about it maybe me feel like I am officially a runner! I definitely need that boost to embrace my runner identity on these cold December days!

Congrats on your new holiday stockings! E-mail us at runmother at gmail dot com, and in the subject line write Sole Socks Winner! In the e-mail, please include your shoe size and your address, and we’ll get on it.

I was plagued by injuries in 2010, so my primary goal for 2011 is to strengthen my core muscles so that my body can function better on my runs and suffer fewer injuries. To do this, I will attend a strengthening class at my local Y 2x/wk. And if that goes well I will work on my speedwork and get that sub 8-minute mile on my 5ks.

There are so many things I would like to do with running this coming year but I have two major goals. The first is to stay injury free!!! This past year I ran 1100 miles and this coming year my other major goal is to run 1500. It would be easier to achieve if I reach my first goal of an injury-free year! Oh and yes…my third goal is to enjoy the journey that running has in store for me this coming year!!!

  13. December 14, 2010 5:42 am

My distance running goals may vary (10 miler 2009, marathon 2010, ??? 2011) but my running goal is always the same. To do something that is exclusively for me and only me. It’s my sanity, my drug, my “I don’t feel like getting up but it does more for me than another hour of sleep ever will” solution to managing life’s big and small curve balls. It makes me a better all around person and when you wear many hats (wife, mother, friend, daughter, worker bee) you need all the help you can get.

Denita that is not a small goal at all. Coming from someone who was in the same boat I completely understand. My goal early this year was exactly that! I ran my first 5k in 2009 and wanted to finish in under 30 minutes. I did but had to walk a couple of times. I did the same race in 2010 and did it without walking at all!

My goals are to get up to running 2 miles by the end of this month. I am not a runner and after the race above I stopped running, then got injured over the summer and just started back up again.

Before my March 5k I would like to be able to run 4 miles. I also want to run my 5k in 27 minutes.

  29. December 14, 2010 6:46 am

Short term, my goal is to NOT gain any weight over the holiday season. I’ve decided to cut myself some slack in the diet department, and in exchange, I have to workout most days each week. This is just my little deal with myself, so that I can enjoy the holiday goodies without as much guilt. Long term, I’m hoping to get more stregnth training into my weekly rotation, and I hope to run a sub-2 hour half-marathon this year. Hoping for the Kentucky Derby Mini Marathon and/or a Rock-n-Roll Half next year.

  30. December 14, 2010 6:46 am

My original goal was to lose weight. And after 20 pounds, I can say I did that. However, it’s a constant effort to maintain. Running is no longer just for weight-loss. It’s my sanity. So my goal for running is to stay healthy, physically and mentally.

I have more energy, so I’m more productive. I’m in better general health, and I think this contributes to my immunity, so I rarely get sick.

He’s also the same sort of guy who can drink beer whenever he wants and eat like a Sumo wrestler and still look like an Adonis on his little 3 miles a week and, maybe, if he’s feeling ambitious, 20 minutes of strength training.

My primary goals are to run 1000 miles in 2011 and to seek out hills — they killed me in both the bike and run legs of my first sprint tri this year and I’m determined not to let that happen again!

At first, my goal was just to be able to run and not walk for thirty or so minutes. Now that I’ve started to amaze myself with runs of more than an hour, my goal for this upcoming year is to run a half marathon. I just scared myself typing that!

  74. December 14, 2010 8:04 am

My running goals change with the barometer it seems. One minute it’s see more of the world by doing more destination races. THe next it’s shave off a couple of minutes on the 1/2 marathon. Today it’s not to be intmidated by P. Fitzingers Advanced Marathon plan.

Mix up my training with different kinds of workouts, participate in fun races, make friends, all that good stuff 🙂 Currently, my “concrete” running goal is to train for and complete the 2012 Walt Disney World marathon. It will be my first marathon!

My ultimate goal is to run a marathon by the time I’m 50. I started running this year at 44. So far, I’ve done 3 5ks and improved my time on each one, then I had a little setback with an injury. Next year I’ll do a 10k and keep trying to improve my time, and just work up from there. My kids are only 5 and 3, so my most important goal is to get/stay in shape and set a good example for them.

My long-term goals are to break a 1:45 half-marathon and to do a sub-4 marathon.

  83. December 14, 2010 8:16 am

Ugh, right now my goal is to just get out and run…anything! The cold has me completely unmotivated, along with the Chirstmas errands, work and the endless supply of goodies – this is killing my training! So in stead of concentrating on a February half-marathon and beating myself up about how each week my runs are not satisfactory. I have TODAY shifted my goal and my thinking to just get through this madness, one foot in front of the other. Whether it is 3 miles or 10 miles, just get some miles in until I can’t do anymore.

I think that is my problem right now – I can’t decide on what my goal is. It used to be finishing a 1/2 marathon, but I have done that enough that it doesn’t really motivate me. I have to decide whether I am just a social runner or if I want to strive to get better. If I don’t chicken out, my next goal will be a long duathalon in June – 50-60 mile bike ride followed by a 1/2 marathon.

1- I’d like to run 3 miles on my due date again. I’ve run all the way through this pregnancy (7 months & counting) and I did the same including 3 miles on my due date with my first son.

2-I’m due March 1st, and I am signing up for an awesome local marathon in October that I’ve done before. I’m not putting an official time goal on it, but I’d be really happy with a sub 4…

I run to simply have a goal for myself. We spend our youth and young adult lives always working towards something – graduation from high school and college. Career. Getting married. Having kids. No one tells you that after you’ve accomplished that, that it can be unsettling to not have a personal goal. So I run to have a goal – whether it’s how many workouts can I get in during the week, or what’s the next big racing distance I can conquer.

  175. December 14, 2010 12:00 pm

I want to say my goal is to run a marathon in 2011. But I’m not completely convinced I’m there yet. My real goal, and this will out me as not quite a RLAM-er, is I want to run a marathon before I have kids. (Just proof that all you women are ridiculously inspiring to those of us who have not entered motherhood.) I know kids are only a few years away, and I want to run a marathon before that happens for two reason: (1) I have a need to convince myself that I can do this, if I can run a marathon, I can do anything, sort of thing; and (2) if I run a marathon, that means I’m really a runner and running will really be incorporated into my life. And I really want to make sure I feel like a runner before my life changes completely. So that’s the ultimate goal: Run the allusive 26.2 before going through the allusive pushing a baby out of my body!

I want to increase my mileage in 2011, whatever number that may be, just more. Also, I want to run 1 race every month for a few months at a time. It may sound crazy, but this weekend I diagnosed myself with having a phobia of racing! Even in laid-back 5Ks, I get nervous, I can’t quiet my head from babbling negative self doubts, I feel like throwing up, etc. I know my body isn’t the problem b/c this doesn’t happen when it’s just me and my neighborhood sidewalk. So, in 2011, I want to conquer my negative racing brain and I figure the more I race, the more comfortable I will get with it.

    2: Run a sub 2 hour 1/2 marathon

I’ve run two marathons, but it’s been 4 years since the last one, and while it was the Rome marathon, it still ended slower than I’d trained for (those cobblestones are a killer!). So my goal this year is to run the Colorado Marathon in 4 hrs and hope my name gets pulled in the NYC lottery. And – to place 2nd in my age group. Just once. I’ve placed 3rd in my age group in 6 races. I really want the glory of 2nd!

My 2011 goal is to qualify for Boston! I will give it my first shot in May at the Cleveland Marathon–15 months after my second little one, Emery Grace, was born. Here’s hoping the post-baby endorphins and burst of energy will help get me there!

I loved those people, enough to get up at 5 am three times a week , even in the winter! I really want to find a new group to run with while training for a spring marathon.
