12K’s of the Holidays: Day 2+2+2+2

December 16, 2010

When God was handing out body parts, Dimity and I both must have dilly-dallied in the Height line, thus coming up short in the Breast one. Or, put another way: We are not big-boobed gals. While we can’t exactly relate to the literal pain some women runners feel when they go running–bounce, bounce, BOUNCE–we do value a well-designed, high-quality sports bra. After breastfeeding our respective bambinos, our chests need love and kindness in return. Features like well-placed (or non-existant) seams, padding (we hate high beams!), dependable support (ban any bounce), and fabric that wicks like there’s no tomorrow.

Through our years of running, we’ve come to count on Champion sports bras to deliver the goods. When I pull a Compression Vented Sports Bra, which Jessie gamely modeled, over my head before the crack o’ dawn, I know it’s going to keep my just-about-a-handful breasts securely in place. Its breathable mesh lining moves sweat away from my body. And the array of bright colors brightens my morning, even though it’s still pitch-black out.

Today, we’ve got five Champion sports bras to give away; the random winners can pick the style that fits her chest the best.

But in order to enter, we want to know this: who is the biggest supporter of your running? (Support…get it?) Spouse or beau? Kids? Parents? Friend? Trainer or coach? Weight Watchers counselor? Give them props, and your chest could get a lift.

One more time: Who’s your #1 running fan?

_____________________________________________________

Six winners of the Isis Henna Hipsters–and their commando preferences–are

1. Megan A: Depends on the pants or shorts. If they have a boy short or lining – commando. For winter running pants, no commando.

2. Lauren M.: I always wear them except when I wear my running shorts or skirts with the built in brief.

3.  Rachel: Nay. I switched to commando a couple of years ago – best decision ever. However, these underwear sound fabulous!

4. Veronica: None w/ shorts, and I recently tried going commando in tights/capris as well. It is apparently a no-go as I sweat like a dude and had a massive case of crack sweat that was embarrassingly visible.

5. Katie: Nay. Commando. Although I had to work up to being comfortable with that.

6. Kim: Nay~BUT would love to try a good pair workout undies that don’t “travel”!

Congrats, congrats. E-mail us at runmother at gmail dot com to claim your undies. Please put “Isis winner” in the subject line and your size and address in the body.

Probably my sister just because we are running (or workout) partners 5 days a week. But my husband seems to generally think it is cool and is very impressed that I can just go out and run 12 miles, no biggy! 🙂 Meanwhile, my daughter cries at least once a week (or every other) and says “don’t go running Mommy!” She’s 6.

My biggest supporter is definitely my husband. He helps with the kids, brings them out to cheer me on at races and listens to me when I jabber on and on about mileage, time and running clothes. 🙂 He is a sweet, wonderful man, and I need to tell him that way more often!

The biggest supporter of my running has to be my twin sister Lisa K. Not only is she encouraging and excited about the races i do and how often i’m running, but she is also the one that I compare myself to and compete with. If I can come close to her times in races then I’m doing great. When our babies were small and we lived on the same continent, we used to do running trades. I would watch the 5 kiddos while she went for a run, then when she returned, i would go for my run. It was such a great set up! And now when I visit her in MN we still schedule our kids’ playdates around when we need to get out for a run!

I have many people who support my running. My hubby lets me spend hours out on the road and many times my daughter cheers me on from our jogger. However my #1 fan is my running buddy Jill! She helps me achieve every crazy goal I set and logs most of the training right by my side! I’m sad that she is not living as close to me now but she is still my biggest cheerleader!

My biggest supporter without a doubt is my husband. He never questions my need to run and will even let me ramble on and on about running and shoes and running gear, etc. He never complains when I head out the door for long runs. My kids are also big supporters who have waited at many finish lines for me with hugs and high fives.

My biggest supporters are my kids. They allow me to go out and run…getting themselves breakfast on those days (if you call a little toast with a jar if Nutella breakfast!) and even will bring me my shoes(asking a stressed out mom, “don’t you think you should go for a run?” ). They really understand what running means to me and whether they realize it or not they do understand on some level that a running mommy is a happy mommy!

Definitely my husband. He always makes sure that I get my run in and he never makes me feel guilty for taking time away from my family to do it. Sometimes he will suggest that I take a break, but he never insists and he’s always right. I realized my dream of running the Boston Marathon in April because of his support. For Mother’s Day he gave me a shadow box that he put together with my finisher’s medal, bib number and picture. He’s the best!

My husband and kids are always there at the end of a race cheering me on, my youngest son will give me a high five as I’m going out the door for an after work run. My biggest supporter has to be my sister…I send her a text after every run to tell her how well (or not so well) I did and she always sends back loads of encouragement and goals…she is also my long distance training partner; we are both training for the Princess Half Marathon at Disney in Feb, she in NY and me in Fl!

  14. December 16, 2010 4:44 am

No contest. My husband. He has never, not ONCE, moaned or groaned about my need to get a long run it during marathon training. He’s not a runner but he has a lot of outlets he enjoys through his work and he knows that since I work at home with small children all day…. this is my ticket to sanity and self worth. Gotta love and appreciate that!

  15. December 16, 2010 4:48 am

That’s a tough question to answer. My husband is probably the most supportive. However, my biggest fan is my mother. She calls me after every single races. She ooos and ahhs and says all the right things.

  16. December 16, 2010 4:52 am

My family stays home when I race now, and they’ve threatened to have me committed if I buy Yak Trax so I can run in the ice/snow!! At the same time the other day when I asked them (my DH and DD) if they’d rather come home to a clean house or to a me who got my run in-without hesitation they said “you make SURE you get your run in. Period!”. DH listens to me babble on about every day’s time/distance, supports me buying gear, encourages me to keep training to become faster and go further…and LOVES my runner body, even though he loved my curves “just as much”. DD at least talks about coming to watch me race …and probably will when it warms up again. So the short answer is “my family”!! 😀

My biggest supporter is, without question, my sister Joanie. She did not judge as I started and quit my too many prior attempts at maintaining a consistent running routine. Just as Nemo’s Dory keeps swimming, swimming, swimming, Joanie kept gently encouraging, encouraging, encouraging. Thanks to my sister, I have developed a LOVE of running and feel so out of sorts when my husband and three kids have schedule demands that do not permit a run on a particular day. I have completed three 5K’s and one 10K and am seriously considering a half-marathon in the Spring. Hugs to my supportive sister and thanks to RLAM for your awesome blog!

My husband! (for the whole time we’ve been together – many years of significant other-dom before the wedding) Whatever distant race I want to enter, whatever puny mileage I’m doing, whatever training plan I’m analyzing and obsessing over through hours of discussion, however many different orthotics, sports medicine visits, chiropractor appointments and even (gulp) “ooh, running store!” visits – not to mention the outlay of funds for same and all the gear, nutrition, etc. – he is always my biggest fan!!! He’s even offered to pace me for my next half so I can continue to improve my PR.

I too must have dallied in the height line (vs. endowment line) but I’ve come to appreciate both the height and smaller bust over the years. No breastfeeding droops for me, just aging, gravity and running, I guess. 🙂

This might sound strange, but my biggest supporter is my facebook family.
My runkeeper automatically posts my run stats after each run. The comments I get about my run really keep me going. It is also a source of accountability. My FB friends know I run and expect to see 4-5 runkeeper posts a week. There have been days when I really did not want to get out in this horribly cold weather, but did it anyway partly (or mostly) because I knew that I would get encouraging/incredulous comments for running 18km in a snow storm etc.

And, when I tore my PCL last year, she modified her workout plans and came swimming with me instead, because it was the only exercise I could do for a few months. When she became too pregnant to run comfortably (ironically just a week after I was able to run again), we took our dogs to the trails at the nearby park instead. We’re both running again now, thankfully! Sometimes being supportive of a runner is the ability to be flexible when you cannot actually run!

I almost didn’t post anything today because I didn’t want to be Debbie Downer 🙂 but I’m not really sure who supports my running. I often feel as though I’m going at it alone. Maybe I would have to say that I am my biggest supporter. Since I don’t have the familial fan club or running partners that so many of you have, I have to motivate myself, get my butt outside for a run, cheer myself on at races, and juxtapose our family’s schedule/life so that no one is inconvenienced. Gosh, that sounds pathetic! I hope there are others out there like me so I don’t feel like the only RLAM who is a self-supporter! After getting well over 200lbs she decided she’d had enough and started walking and hiking last year, now she’s doing run/walk intervals and has run her first mile since high school. My aunt (who is more like a cool, older sister)who expresses her pride and genuine interest and even indulged my craziness of doing long runs in a college town on game days. I called her when I hit my wall in my 1st marathon and then again at 25.5 when I was elated and knew I was going to make it 🙂 I am hoping to bring her to the finish line of her 1st half marathon in the next year.

The other is my fiance who offers the daily support and positive affirmations of my efforts and never complains about the time training takes me away from home (I have a demanding career that also keeps me away quite a bit) He also travels with me to out of town races, dutifully waiting at the finish, camera in hand and indulges my pre-race mood swings and post-race cravings. I could never ever thank either of them enough!

  130. December 16, 2010 8:56 am

My husband for sure. He was a very competitive rower and then a very competitive rowing coach, so he has coached me in all my races and my very first marathon of 3:49 in 2002…..and I was ‘never’ a runner. Although he’s a commercial real estate broker now, it’s fun to see him turn into ‘coach’ when I do well or nail a PR. The only tricky part is if he’s ever right next to me training me on a hard run or bike telling me to go harder and I just want to turn to him sometimes and say, “Shut the F up. I’m going as hard as I can!” But he knows I have more and doesn’t give in to my whining. And after the workout or race, I am that much more satisfied for that. His expectations of me are way higher than mine and I always end up surprising myself if I listen to him and stick to his plans.

After he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the summer of 2007, he lost the ability to see the tennis ball fly by, and he’s largely lost the ability to enjoy his sport of choice. In spite of this, when I came down with a painful case of shin splints on my last long run and had to cancel my attempt at a sub-4 marathon–after 4 months of training–he comforted and supported me without a shred of self-pity. I have a couple friends who are super supportive, but the most is my husband, hands down! He runs sometimes and doesn’t want to do events, but is totally behind me doing them. He even drove me into Seattle recently at 6:30 am (he HATES the city), so that I wouldn’t have to ride the train by myself. My local friends had all bailed on me for a recent half but I was determined to do it 🙂

My husband has to be my number one supporter. He has been FABULOUS since I’ve started running. There is no way I’d have been able to train for my first half coming up next month if it weren’t for him. My daughter comes a VERY close second, though. Everytime I get ready for a run or to go to the gym she always asks, “Can I watch you, momma?”. It melts my heart every time:)

my daughter and my husband!! My daughter will run with me on occasion (to be honest, when she started cross country last year I wanted to run to be able to run with her) and the husband does anything to help out (make dinner, drive the kid around, etc) so I can get my run on!

He’s brought both our kids to my other 2 races (one a 3-degree Thanksgiving Turkey Trot) and even goes out on the course to take pictures for me. I show him my new gear, and he always had something nice to say. Plus, I have heard him say more than once he likes my “tight runner’s butt!” And I’m taking that to be a good thing 😉

For sure my husband, who will do 100% of everything (cleaning, cooking, taking care of the kids, meeting me at races, etc) without even being asked. Not only so I can run, but so that I’m a happy person in general. He’s perfect – I’m lucky, I know.

My close 2nd is my bestest running mama pal, Chelle, who does 100% of everything you want a running partner to do (meets you early for a run – regardless of the weather, walks w/ you when you really need it, listens to your successes and gripes about running over email, text, phone calls, etc. and has even promised to pace me in the last 3 miles of my next marathon so I don’t finish with the dreaded marathon death walk!)

My friend Beth. We were close friends in high school (26 years ago!) and had sort of drifted apart. We ran into each other at my first 5k (done as part of a Weight Watchers challenge-so I mostly walked). She encouraged me to join her in the mornings and has steadfastly shown up in the wee hours, in the heat of South Georgia August and in the current, unusually cold of December. She is also the one who ran eith me in the first 5k where I ran the whole thing and she let me go through the shoot first. She is an awesome friend and an even better cheerleader.

P.S. she is also an elementary school principal and her school started a running club that meets and runs on Mondays. It is quite a sight when you see a whole group of elementary school kids in their matching t-shirts running those 5ks also.

My dad ran track in high school and I feel that connection with him. He and my mom come to my practices when I high jump and give me input on what Im doing right or wrong. They are the people who make sure Im early for every practice and have a brand new pair of runnig shoes for each season. I’ve even motivated them to start exercising and walking the track when Im practicing.

My husband is the most amazing supporter of my running habit! Not only does he do whatever he can to allow me to train, but he comes to my races whenever possible, usually bringing a child or three in tow. But the most incredible thing he did was travel with me to SF to run my first marathon (SBS and Dimity – I believe you met him at the expo when you did your talk). Not only did he run his own mini-marathon that day, cheering me on from all over the course, but he also made the most incredible movie, documentary/music video style, of the weekend (and yes, SBS and Dimity are featured in the video too!). I couldn’t do this without him!!

My boyfriend is my biggest supporter. He’s been running longer, runs marathons, but he is so patient and a great cheerleader. Any of my very minor gains are major to him and he always encourages me to keep going. And when I don’t – he doesn’t beat me up about it, but encourages me to try again. I successfully did a 5K this summer and have signed up for a mini in the Spring. I don’t think I would’ve done any of it without his support.

My biggest supporter (aside from myself) would be my parents. My dad is very proud of my dedication and abilities, and my mom attends almost every race I have entered. However, at the heart of things, I know that I am my own biggest supporter. Without my internal drive to push myself, I would sit on my butt and watch TV or “veg out” like everyone else. There’s definitely something “different” about us runners, and I think it’s because running is a sport where you really have to push yourself to get moving. Even if you have people behind you that support you–it is ultimately YOUR decision whether you get your body up and going…and I think we all deserve credit for that!

Easy, my husband. Even though he sabotages my own efforts with his bad habits he does support my running and fitness. Now that we have a son I think he is relieved to know he won’t have to do races with me since someone has to watch our baby while I’m on the course.

My biggest supporter is my son, without him even realizing it. I’m a single mom to a 4 1/2 year old, and have always been a single mom. I ran track in high school but stopped running for some time. When the stress of life and work and single parenthood weighed me down heavily I started running again, and although I’m doing it for me, the image of my son is always on my mind when running. I think of him when I’m struggling in a race and want to quit. I imagine how proud of me he will be when he’s old enough to understand. Whether it’s him telling me which way to run while he’s in the jogger, or just thinking of the good example I’m setting for him, my son is definitely what pushes me for one more mile.

From there he took off, entering all sorts of races – 5k, 10k, duathlons – he even ran a half marathon! He ran beside me during my first 10k and helped me crack through the wall to finish – even though he definitely could have gone faster. We are always chatting about running, running clothes, running music – he has been a great “supporter”!

Definitely has to be my husband. He watches the kids almost EVERY Saturday morning when I go for my long runs, and doesn’t complain when I run off to races on other weekends. He drags the kids along to cheer me on, and even though they often get bored and whiny, he still has smiles and encouragement for me. My hubby is my biggest supporter, he actually pays attention when I tell him that I just ran 4 km at 5 min/km, and he UNDERSTANDS what that is to me. He has also found the perfect level of annoying that will get me out for a run when I am sloughing it off, but doesn’t make me want to cause him bodily harm. (AND he watches all 4 kids while I run).

My biggest fan is my 2 yo daughter, when she sees me in my tights, she brings my runners to me and says “Here you go mummy, you go “nunning” now”.

My husband for sure. Whenever I say I want to go for a run, he always has a positive and genuine response. He always lets my running come before his workouts. He brings our young daughters (dressed in outfits only dads can come up with) to watch me finish a race or triathlon. If I have an injury, he commiserates with me. I am so very grateful for this kind of support.

My husband hasn’t always been supportive of my running. This year while I trained for my first marathon he helped out a lot by taking care of the kids while I did my long runs and was waiting for me every two miles during the last half of my marathon to cheer me along and to see if I needed anything. Now he supports me fully.

My boyfriend Paul is my biggest supporter. I run about one race a week and he comes to all of them. No matter the weather, cold and rain, snow or heat he comes to all of them and always takes a finisher’s photo for me. He’s the best!

A bit of a toss up but I’d say my biggest supporter right now is my mother! She babysat for me while I was participating in a running clinic, and has brought my son out to cheer me on at my first race (and subsequently cheered me and my son on at our first race together!). (the other competitor for biggest supporter would be the aforementioned son LOL).

The days I feel like letting the bed-magnet win, he gives me the swift kick I need to get going. Times when I am discouraged by not meeting a running goal, he reminds me of my successes .. my biggest of which is converting him into a runner as well.
