12K’s of the Holidays: The Finish Line!
Yesterday on our Facebook page, Janelle posted that she played Santa at Costco, snapping up a Garmin for her own stocking. She wrote, “Now I might be as excited as my girls for Christmas morning (if there wasn’t so much to get done).”
Hallelujah, Janelle, we also think a Garmin is the perfect present for a runner.
That’s why we are culminating our 12K’s of the Holidays with one lucky gal winning a Garmin Forerunner 110, complete with a Garmin heart rate monitor. We love pretty much everything about the 110: from the fact it works as a time-teller, as well as a pace-keeper and distance-tracker to the fact it feels more like a watch than a semi-conductor strapped to my wrist. During every tempo run, track workout, long run, and, most importantly, race that puppy is strapped to my wrist, letting me know I’m on target (or not–ack!).
To be the one-and-only winner of a 110, tell us your favorite holiday song. Yes, our gift to everyone is a gimme question so more folks have a chance to win. I’ve been overdosing on a Pandora holiday station on my computer when I work, a carols-only station while piloting the Odyssey, and the Glee Christmas CD on the stereo. But my all-time fave remains Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas.” Bono’s heart-wrenching line, “Well, tonight thank God it’s them instead of you” gets me every time. (And the whole song transports me back to freshman year of college…)
Share your most beloved holiday song with us, and we’ll wrap a Garmin Forerunner 110 for you.

The two lucky (and tired) winners of the pair of the Montrail Fairhavens shoes and Mountain Hardwear Geist jacket–and the sacrifices they make for running–are
1. Kathy: The part of my life that takes a hit for running is sleep. If I can’t get out in the early AM I am much less likely to fit it in. I don’t like to sacrifice my family time because that is so limited with work and school and real world activities. So I may not maintain my youthful glow for much longer due to sleep deprivation, but I will certainly live longer and happier with my early morning runs!
2. Kasey: Sleep is always a big sacrifice, especially as a mom where is seems like there is never enough! (who doesn’t love waking up to “MOM I HAVE STINKY POOP” screamed from the bathroom?) I sacrifice fashion, because when it comes down to it how can I spend $80 on cute boots when that is nearly a new pair of running shoes? I sacrifice time with my kids and husband, but I love that my kids ask about my run. I love knowing that they see me making the time to be active, and I know it makes me a much happier mom when I come home.
Congrats Kathy and Kasey! E-mail us at runmother at gmail dot com with your address, sizes for shoes and jacket and color preferences. We’re on it.
I’ve always loved the Boston Pops version of “Sleigh Bells” and Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song”. Now that I have a daughter, I love listening to Christmas music with her and singing along together! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!
I have always loved the Boston Pops version of “Sleigh Ride” and Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song”. And I constantly play the “Charlie Brown Christmas” music….my 3y/o LOVES this!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
So many beautiful holiday songs, hard to pick just one – but I’d have to say White Christmas. The song is classic, simple, and I’ve heard it a million times. But every time I hear it, it warms my heart. I’m watching the weather forecast and we may even have a white Christmas on the east coast!
This is an easy one! Santa Clause Is Coming To Town, but not just any version…the one I love is when my 3 year old sings it. Precious!
Happy Holidays!!!
“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” by the Eagles. It reminds me that family is really what is important during the holidays.
Amy Grant’s “I Need A Silent Night” and “Mary’s Song”.
dreaming of a white christmas. i live in georgia so i never get one, but i can always dream!
I really have so many but, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” sung by James Taylor always makes me feel so much joy and love.
SO so many, but I love the choral classics, like In Dulcio Jublio, and Angels We Have Heard on High!
Also, loving the Charlie Brown Christmas Station on Pandora right now!
I am not sure the real name of it, but I think it’s called I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, no matter how stressful the season gets this song can sure cheer me up!
I also love Joy to the World sung at our holiday mass on Christmas Eve.
Thanks for the giveaway!!!
It all depends on my mood and whose company I am in… with my daughter, we prefer Hark, the Herald Angel Sing; when I’m out with my girlfriends our favorites are All I Want for Christmas is You or A Tender Tennessee Christmas; and when I’m sitting in church soaking up the true meaning of Christmas nothing compares to Oh Come All Ye Faithful.
I love nearly all of them but “The Little Drummer Boy” has always held a soft spot for me. This year the Bing Crosby classic version of “White Christmas” is my pick though. Merry Christmas!
I love all the Christmas songs by Andy Williams. They’re all just wonderful! But my favorite is “Little Altar Boy”.
I wanted to thank you for doing this daily blog and let you know that often your posts inspire me to try a little harder and run just a little further. I’ve been sidelined with injuries very frequently this year and it’s been so discouraging, but your column gives me a smile and a slice of determination that’s been very helpful. Thank you and have a wonderful holiday!
My daughter singing along with the cheetah girls, “marshmallow world”!
Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. It’s just so fun!!!
O Holy Night gets me every time… I always sing along (much to my daughters’ dismay, since I can’t carry a tune) and feel completely filled with the meaning of Christmas by the end of it. Hope you and your families have a very Merry Christmas!
O Holy Night
Dona Nobis Pacem…
Because “Grant Us Peace” is, I think, the wish and prayer that would take care of all our other wishes and prayers….
And because my sisters and I used to sing it as a 3-part round in the back of the van when we were kids.
I had a chance to sing it this season with a group of talented singers and there’s just something remarkable about simple 3-part a capella harmony.
And seriously: GRANT US PEACE!
The Christmas Song sung by Nat King Cole.
One of the best songs ever, “When Winter Comes a Callin” by the Ray Charles Singers.
I agree with an earlier poster…Santa Claus is coming to town, because my kids try to be good for 30 seconds after we sing it and they all sing along!
Ever since I was a little girl, my favorite has been “White Christmas” sung by Bing Crosby.
😀
What a great culminating prize! My favorite holiday song is “Christmas Wrapping” by the Waitresses. I love the story and it gets me singing every time.
I just love, love, love “We Need a Little Christmas” when it is belted out by an inspired chorus. 🙂 It starts, “Haul out the holly, put up the tree before my spirits fall again.”We might be rushing things, but -deck the halls again, now!” The singers are just so darned excited and impatient for Christmas…”We need a little Christmas, right this very minute…” It’s really a seize the day/spirit song. This has been a sad season for our family. I am trying to seize the spirit so that our three daughters have a meaningful Christmas. For me, running has been that daily boost to get me through. I hope this song revs up others for the Holidays, too!
There are so many wonderful Christmas songs but “O Holy Night” has to be my favorite. It is a beautiful song that truly captures the meaning of Christmas. It brings a tear to my eye everytime that I hear it.
I love the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. My favorite one from it is an instrumental of “O Christmas Tree”.
Karen Carpenter singing Merry Christmas Darling. takes me back to my shag carpet bedroom that I shared with my sister…
Silent night is one that gets me every time. I love the songs that are about the reason for the season.
I love “It’s the Most wonderful time of the year!” It just is a wonderful song! I also love to listen to Mannheim Steamroller or Transiberian orchestra because I love the instrumental songs!
My favorite Christmas song has always been Carol of the Bells. There’s something magical about that song- it gives me goosebumps!
I’ll be home for Christmas is my favorite. A very sentimental song for me because my family now is in another state and my mom has passed away. Growing up it meant we were all together and those were the best days.
Family tradition to play Andy Williams while decorating the tree…”ring-a-ling, ring, ring-a-ling, just hear those sleigh bells”….oh, and you have to drink egg nog, dance, and decorate all at the same time!
Silent Night sung by Josh Grobin!
Drummer Boy- just love the peace in that song!!
O Holy Night. Hands Down. But I’ll be honest- I love them all!
This Christmas by Donnie Hathaway is my favorite holiday song.
I love Barbra Streisand’s Jingle Bells! Just a nice fast strong version of Jingle Bells that puts spring in my step and a smile on my face!
my favorite is “The Christmas Song” by Dave Matthews Band. I also really love Diana Krall’s version of “Jingle Bells” and Elvis Presley’s “Here Comes Santa Claus.” Merry Christmas, ladies! Thanks for inspiring me and so many others all throughout 2010!!!!!
any by Glee and I LOVE “Last Christmas”
Oh Holy Night! When my kids were younger they loved it when I’d sing this song. Now that they are older not so much…but that doesn’t stop me!
Jingle Bell Rock! My boys and I have been singing it all season.
My favorite song is “I’ll be Home for Christmas.” But, really, I love all the Christmas songs!!!
I’m a big fan of Silent Night. Probably because all I want for Christmas is a silent night!
Silent Night, especially if sung solo by a soprano, gives me goosebumps every time!
Feliz Navidad! Every year we play this song over and over, singing it together while decorating the tree. It is what I most look forward to at Christmas. This year my three year old joined in, wishing us “Meliz Mavimah!”
Beep Beep Bye Bye “Santa’s Got a Semi”
Happy Holidays, everyone!
I love ‘Let it Snow’! It conjures up the warmth of the season…plus we need a fresh covering here to hide the not-so-festive dog-pee yellow snow!
Right now my favorite holiday song is the Barenaked Ladies rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. The string bass groves it. The Good Lovelies also have a great Christmas album out called Under the Misletoe, good folk style holiday tunes.
I have to agree with Monica, every year I break out the Barenaked Ladies God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen… but I’m also loving the flash mob(s) Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah alot too…
When Love Came Down by Point of Grace is my favorite song. When my kids were small, it was always the first CD that was played on day we put up our Christmas tree. Special memories! A close second is definitely Do They Know it’s Christmastime? by Band-Aid!
I have two … BNL God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and I still love the Do They Know its Christmas Time (I think its Live Aid).
My favorite is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You”. Just makes me want to dance!
I love “Mary Did You Know” and “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem.” Merry Christmas RLAM… thank you for all you do us…
Christmas Wrappign by the Waitresses. So cheesyball but it ALWAYS puts be in a good holiday mood so that’s what makes it my top favorite!
O Holy Night is fay and away my favorite song. Every Christmas eve service while I was growing up, this was the last song that was sung and it was so beautifully done. Love it.
This is a hard one. I never get sick of The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole. Then again there is nothing funny than a two-year-old making up her own words to Rudolf. Happy Holidays! And here’s to a lot more running fun in 2011!
“Holiday Canon” by TransSiberian Orchestra by far! 🙂
Christmas Canon(the version with the childrens choir) by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra tops my list! It is magical. I never get tired of listening to it.
Anything on the Casting Crowns Christmas CD.
Hard to pick one favorite since I love them all… but I will go with “Do You Hear What I Hear”… brings back such good memories of my younger days 🙂
Carol of the Bells by Trans Siberian Orchestra. I love all the instruments and how it almost sounds more like a rock song than Christmas. It always puts me in the holiday mood!
Oh! You think this is a gimme question, but you don’t realize how hard it is!! Here are a few of my favorites:
– Baby It’s Cold Outside (Zoey Deschnal and Leon Redbone version – the Jessica Simpson/Nick Lache one makes me want to puke)
– Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
– Run Run Rudolph – Chuck Berry (although the Los Lonely Boys version deserves a special mention – it is the only other one I’ve heard that’s comparable)
– Christmas Means to Me – I heart the Hansen version – don’t judge me!
And my 2 year old is really into I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas, so I love listening to him sing that!
My favorite song these days is “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” – mostly just because it makes both my kids get up and dance and get all excited.
Thanks for the fantabulous giveaway!

Handel’s Messiah. I was in a choir in college and we sang the whole darn thing- took about 45 minutes and now I love hearing different parts of it and singing along with my old part.
Carol of the Bells – every version – good energy in this song.
My favorite right now is the Bruce Springsteen version of “Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town,” because I love listening to my two little boys sing along with it!
Mine changes every year. this year i am rocking out to Last Christmas for numerous reasons. Awesome giveaway!
I have to choose “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas.” When I was little, I liked to pretend it was about me!
At the moment it is Feliz Navidad, and that is only because my three year old has decided he LOVES that song and sings it daily. Nothing melts my heart like a little guy belting out “I want to wish you a Merry Christmas!” over and over.
Easily my favorite Christmas song is “Christmas Shoes” by Bob Carlisle. It is such a touching, beautiful song that really reminds us what the season is all about. Merry Christmas to all!!!
Mary did you know?
O Holy Night
O’ Holy Night, all the verses, when it is sung the way it was supposed to be. It drives me crazy when an artist will take a song and “make it their own”.
I love the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLaughlin version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. It is my holiday themed ring tone on my phone! In terms of ultra traditional carols, I love singing and listening to O Holy Night.
Mine is “O Holy Night.” My best memory of it is running at 5am in December through my neighborhood with lots of Christmas lights twinkling, when it came up on my iPod. I had a new (at the time) Avril Lavigne version. Suddenly I was trying to wipe all the tears and run at the same time. It was a very memorable run.
Mariah carey all I want for christmas is you. Love how upbeat and peppy that diddy is.
“The Greatest Gift of All” by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Honestly, anything on the Kenny and Dolly Christmas CD is AWESOME! My husband and boys would disagree but I love it!
I FORGOT TO GET THAT OUT THIS YEAR! Thank you for reminding me JUST IN TIME! I am going to find it and “I’llll be hooome with bells on….!”
I really love them all…I think Silver Bells might be my favorite!
favorite song and always make my kids laugh–
“I’m getting nuttin’ for Christmas” by Barry Gordon
Joy to the World!! Seems to capture the essence of the holiday whether we sing it in church, caroling, hear it on the radio or sung in A Christmas Carol. 😀 Love it!
Christmas Rapping by the Waitresses. Love it!
My boys love Santa Baby- so that is my favorite right now because it is so much fun to see them get excited.
I have always loved Sleigh Ride…just makes you want to get cozy with the ones you love! Merry Christmas!
“all I want for Christmas is you” but my favorite version is in the movie “Love Actually”. It gets me everytime when she points to the boy on the drums! Love it!
We Need A Little Christmas
Silent Night
My favorite holiday song is a toss up between The Christmas Can Can by Straight No Chaser and O Holy Night by Josh Groban. Just depends on my mood 🙂
A gimme question? No way! This is by far the toughest of all! I thought about it on my 45-minute drive to work and still can’t decide! Mary Did You Know, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, Christmas Wrapping, Do They Know It’s Christmas?, All I Want for Christmas Is You, Oh Holy Night (Josh Groban version), Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, The Twelve Pains of Christmas, and ANYTHING belted out at church: Joy to the World, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Oh Come All Ye Faithful…. Am I automatically disqualified because I couldn’t limit my favorite to ONE? 🙂
I love Christmas songs because they reflect the spirit, joy, and meaning of the season. With all the stress and items on our to-do lists, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but after 3 minutes of Bing Crosby I’m able to smile, relax, enjoy, and ho ho ho!
My all time favorite — Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus”. Very powerful!
O Holy Night ALWAYS sends shivers through my body. I love it.
But I love most Christmas songs: Silent Night, Away in a Manger, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree…and whatever song my 3-year-old sings.
Baby, It’s cold outside.
Adeste Fidelis. My kids learned it for Latin class and I just love it.
I love Amy Grant’s “I Need a Silent Night”
Not sure if I could pick just one. I love Have a Holly Jolly Christmas, as well as O Come All Ye Faithful. Not sure why but that one always makes me think of my Grandfather, he passed when I was 7. I would LOVE to win this. It would actually make me want to run outside in the cold and not on the treadmill!
“Winter Song” by Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson is absolutely beautiful – it’s definetely my favorite by far.
I have to admit that I’m a total scrooge and HATE christmas music. There’s one christmas album the I love though. It’s Rivertribe and is completely instrumental christmas carols. The arrangements are amazing and has unusual instruments like didgeridoos. It’s all I listen to at this time of year.
Christmas In the Trenches sung by John McCutcheon
Mele Kalikimaka – always reminds me of good times singing around the piano with lots of family
My absolute favorite holiday song is O, Holy Night; however, my 2yo daughter has learned some of the words to Rudolphy the Red Nosed Reindeer this year so that one is edging it’s way in also!
My all time favorite is Chestnuts Roasting (I think there is a more formal name for it, though).
I LOVE “o holy night”…..because it is such a beautiful song. And it can totally bring me to tears if someone like celine dion or josh groban belt it out in their amazing voice. Kinda like “ave maria.” it doesn’t happen so much when I sing it in all my limited talent, but I can still join in because it’s my fave christmas jam. Holla!
Frosty the Snowman! I know it sounds like an odd choice for a 40YO woman…but it reminds me that the holidays should be FUN! And what runner can resist the “thumpity thump thump” line?
Love “The Little Drummer Boy”. Favorite album/LP (yes, showing my age!!) -Mitch Miller Sing along Christmas. An oldie but a goody.
My favorite songs are Go Tell It on the Mountain, Jingle Bell Rock, and Carol of the Bells… that being said, I LOVE the Target commercial with the funny lady playing Carol of the Bells into all the recordable Christmas Cards.
OH, I love Baby It’s Cold Outside!
I am partial to “the 12 days of christmas” because my kids can never remember the correct words and we just make things up! 🙂
White Christmas, sung by Bing Crosby
all i want for christmas is you
last christmas you gave me your heart
mele kalikimaka
etc.
etc.
Sexiest Christmas Song: Merry Christmas Baby by Elvis Presley, man oh man he was before my time, but when he sings “Merry Christmas Baby, you sure did treat me right…” it is just the sexist thing ever!
Christmas Song that brings tears to my eyes ever year: Happy Christmas by John Lennon, especially when he sings, “So this is Christmas and what have you done?”
So hard to choose! One that is always, even in October, stuck in my head is: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. I also really enjoy Mele Kalikimaka, the version from Christmas Vacation. But possibly my new favorite is my 2.5 year old’s version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. “Rudolph red nosed reindeer, very shiny nose, all the others called him names… *giggle*…”
O Holy Night. The song is just beautiful.
My favorite is O Holy Night…I sing it every year at my church’s Christmas Eve service. however, my favorite secular is Santa Baby!!! 🙂
I look forward to hearing Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer because my boys faces light up every time they hear it!!! It’s amazing how happy I am just seeing their excitement!
Favorite Christmas Song: tie between O Holy Night and I want a Hippopotomus for Christmas! I want a Garmin 110 for Christmas, too 🙂
My favorite Christmas song is John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas (The War is Over)”. It moves me every time I hear it and is as relevant now as when it was written. Peace and happiness to you all and have an awesome holiday!
O Come All Ye Faithful
this is so embarrassing! my fave holiday tune is mariah carey’s “all i want for christmas.” 🙂 so good!
Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”! I don’t admit that to everyone…
I love so many it’s hard to choose. This year I’m really grooving on jazzy versions of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas, the Chipmunk version. Cracks me up every time….even before I had four kids.
When I worked for Home Depot, starting the day after thanksgiving, the Muzak would start the same revolving Christmas playlist. I eventually learned every work to Mele-kalikee-maca and it remains my fave! Mele kalikee maca is the thing to say, on a bright Hawaiian Christmas day!
What Child Is This? – The jazzy Vanessa Williams version.
My most favorite Christmas song is Ave Maria by Harry Connick Jr. Thanks so much for hosting your 12 days of Giveaways. It has been fun!
Up on the Rooftop! Love that song. Every time I hear it I feel like a kid again.
So many to choose from, but I’ll have to pick Angels We Have Heard on High. Although I’ll admit it changes with my mood!
Anything sung at midnight mass on Christmas Eve moves me to tears. Merry Christmas everyone!!
O Holy Night. There is something that is just so magical and powerful about this one.
Christmas with the Family – Robert Earl Keene (also a version Dixie Chicks)
Do they Know it is Christmas – Band Aid (also a version by Bare Naked Ladies)
Pennies from Heaven (Elf Soundtrack)
Any song Diana Krall or Etta James sings for Christmas.
When I was little it was Little Drummer Boy and Frosty the Snowman
I love ‘Angels Among Us by Alabama, I love this song all year but especially at Christmas!
John Lennon’s Happy XMas (War is Over). I blubbered like a baby when McCartney broke into ‘Give Peace a Chance’ at the end of his set on Saturday Night Live a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t grow up as part of the Beatles generation, but my parents did. It became the soundtrack of my childhood, that’s for sure.
Amy Grant “Grown Up Christmas List” – she sings about wanting no more wars and no more worlds torn apart. Isn’t that what we all want?
My favorite Christmas song, pretty much performed by anyone, is ‘Oh Holy Night.’ My kids especially enjoy when I join in (with my less then performance quality voice) on the line ‘Fall, on your knees” line.
I think it’s Silent Night. It’s mostly for that moment in a Christmas Eve church service, when the lights are turned off, and every one has candles, where everything else falls away—all the crazy holiday bustle, the preparations, the shopping, the wrapping—and I think of the Christmas story and just feel peaceful. This from not even a super religious gal. It just gets me in the gut every year.
David Bowie/Bing Crosby’s “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy.” The unlikely duet is beautiful and a little haunting.
This is one of my fondest childhood memories – the Bing Crosby special when they sang it!
Mr. Heat Miser/Snow Miser–covered by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy; I loved this song as a child and now my three boys claim it as their favorite too (plus I love swing music).
Here is the video clip with the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy cover, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMjAf8Nwohs
“I’m Mister White Christmas
I’m Mister Snow
I’m Mister Icicle
I’m Mister Ten Below
Friends call me Snow Miser,
What ever I touch
Turns to snow in my clutch
I’m too much!”
O Holy Night! And preferably the Martina McBride version. That song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it! Merry Christmas!
I can’t help but feel “campy” when Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby” pops up on the radio. Can one run with a feather boa?
Gotta go traditional – ‘Away in a Manger’. My 2- and 4-yr-old girls love the nativity story (and playing with their Little People nativity). Lately they have both been asking me to sing this song – ‘the baby Jesus song’, as it’s known in our house – to them at bedtime. And it was that or David Bowie’s ‘Little Drummer Boy’ 🙂
i love christmas songs, so hard to choose just one. O Holy Night!
“What can you get a wookie for Christmas (when he already owns a comb)”. Seriously, it’s a song from the Star Wars Christmas album. Love it!
I am thrilled to feel like a part of the “inner circle” of run like a mother devotees. What an inspiration you are to so many.
My favorite Christmas song has to be the classic, “Silent Night”, I remember my mom singing it to me when I was little and it brings tears to my eyes to this day.
Thanks for the chance to win this totally awesome give away, it would be nice to push myself using this tool.
Misty,
New Mexico
I love “Face of Love” by Jewel. We listen to it every year while we decorate a tree. The Dixie Chicks’ “Christmas with the Family” is hilarious. “Do they know it’s Christmas” is up there too!
Silent night-especially when my 7 year old songs it!
I had my answer all picked out and then I read this awesome list! No change, though. It’s the David Bowie/Bing Crosby version of Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy. Just love it!
I love the song Keep Christmas with You from Christmas Eve on Sesame Street.
My favorite is “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” ever since we’d moved 1,500 miles away from friends, most of our family, and snow. Hearing it used to make me so sad; now it just makes me sentimental. And maybe a little sad sometimes still.
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”!!
My favorite the last two years has been “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings” by the Barenaked Ladies with Sarah McLachlan. LOVE IT! Truthfully I listen to it year round.
Merry Christmas!
Carol of the Bells is my favorite Christmas song.
Love Oh Holy Night by Nat King Cole and Jingle Bell Rock by Amy Grant!
I love Mele Kalikimaka by Bing Crosby…because it reminds me of the movie Christmas Vacation, which is a favorite of mine!! Merry Christmas!!
Mary’s Song by Amy Grant and Little Jesus Boy by Trisha Yearwood. These songs remind me of the real reason behind the season.
I love Silver Bells.
O Holy Night, such a beautiful song!
That’s almost like asking me which of my kids I love the most, but I’ll choose O Holy Night by Acappella.
Most wonderful time of the year by Andy Williams!
“Angels We Have Heard on High” – is clearly the winner. When I was little, I remember it always came late in the service and I loved holding out the “Gloooorrrriaaaa” parts.
Now, it brings peace and reminder what the season is for.
Merry Christmas everyone!
My favorite Christmas song is Santa Claus is Coming to Town by Bruce Springsteen.
O Holy Night – and sung by a guy with a deep baritone voice! Merry Christmas everyone!
Maybe beloved isn’t the right word, but regardless, it’s my favorite… “All I want for Christmas is a Real Good Tan” by Kenny Chesney. I live in the Midwest and every year about this time, I ask myself “why?” Take me to the island, put my feet in the sand… or running shoes, whichever… 🙂
Jingle Bells for me.
My favorite tends to vary from year to year, but this year it has been the very funny “Another Christmas Song” from Stephen Colbert’s Christmas special. This is an improvement from last year’s favorite: Christmas Eve in the Drunk Tank/Fairytale of New York
Any version of “O Holy Night,” Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” and Amy Grants’ “Breath of Heaven.”
It’s difficult for me to pick just one Christmas song. This year I’ve been playing Winter Song by Audrey Assad.
Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, the Bare Naked Ladies version.
Silver Bells. It always reminds me of the beautiful Christmases I had when I lived in New York City. There is nothing more magical than Christmas in NYC, even hardened NYers do all the touristy things like the tree in Rockafellar, the windows at Saks, skating in central park.
U2’s version of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”. Like you, SBS, it transports me back to college. Thank you for this great contest! It has been so much fun!
Really, just one! I have so many that I love this time of year but one that always warms my heart is O Holy Night!
All of them….there isn’t a one I don’t love. Have been listening to the all Christmas music channel since November!
Only one? Not possible – too many years of choir (so are my favorites those I can sing?), and Christmas music is, in general, my favorite, even though I feel very behind in holiday spirit this year. So, maybe one per genre…..
Religious – Hallelujah Chorus (have you seen the food court flash mob on youtube?)
Traditional – Carol of the Bells
Popular – The Twelve Days of Christmas as performed by Straight No Chaser
Instrumental – Kije’s Ride as performed by the Boston Pops
Now, off to find those stations on Pandora and my holiday TV special DVDs. Ho ho ho! 🙂
Favorite song: I’ll be Home for Christmas. Gets me every time.
O Holy Night, preferably by Bing.
All of them:) but really LOVE the Little Drummer Boy. Merry Christmas!!
O Holy Nite by the GLEE cast!!
The Hanukkah Song by Adam Sandler!
Silent Night – at our church, all the acolytes hold candles and they dim the lights and everyone sings Silent Night – it is really pretty and touching.
born to die by Bebo Norman… incredible lyrics, beautiful melody.
My favorite song is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” Judy Garland’s version
Boots by The Killers.
The Waitresses-Christmas Wrapping. I may have to add it to my running playlist.
“Sleigh Ride” (the version by The Boston Pops Orchestra)
alvin and the chipmunks christmas song
i want a hippopotamus for Christmas…only a hippopotamus will do!
that song has a certain “something” that gets in my head
Any version of Carol of the Bells!
So many to chose from, but the first to come to mind was “The Little Drummer Boy “.
My favorite holiday song is Talk a Walk through Bethlehem by Trisha Yearwood. I love the thought of being able to simply do that, take a walk through Bethlehem that night. How amazing the Christmas story is when you think of the simple things that mattered then. That song reminds me that all the wrapping, rushing and worrying about making the holiday special is not what is important. The lyrics remind me to celebrate the gift I have already been given and how important it is that I share it with my family.
So tough – my current fave is “Wintersong” by Sarah McLachlan…
LOVE the song, “Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time”…puts me in a great mood EVERY time I hear it!
Merry Christmas and thank you for the opportunity to win such a cool watch!
I must be too jaded because my favorite has always been “Father Christmas” by the Kinks. That said, the Bing Crosby/David Bowie duet mentioned a few times above always stops me in my tracks. But this year, my local radio has been playing John Lennon’s Happy Christmas (The War is Over) and although I’ve always loved the song, the beginning part where he wishes Yoko and Julian each a Merry Christmas make me teary. I just imagine what it would mean to them today…not so jaded after all!
I, too, love Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” but my FAVORITE christmas song is “A New York Christmas” by Rob Thomas!
I love love love Oscar the Grouch singing “I Hate Christmas”. Anything on that Sesame Street album, really 😀
Jingle Bells but in French so “Vive le Vent”
Silent Night by BoyzIIMen…LOVE the acapella!
I’ve always loved the Little Drummer Boy – rum pa pum pum, rum pa pum pum…..
It’s hard to pick just one favorite, but the Allelujah chorus from the Messiah is right up there on the list.
My favorite Christmas song is “O Holy Night.”
Elvis’s Blue Christmas… It’s a classic.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Hard to pick a favorite, but I love “Santa Baby” 🙂
Silent Night.
Wow! You guys went all out for the last day! I would LOVE this! My Nike foot sensor is kaput, so I can only Mapmyrun.com my runs, and use my watch to time it. 😦 getting old.
Anyway, my favorite Christmas song is “Mary, did you know?” …my favorite version is by Clay Aiken. Brings tears to my eyes every time. 2nd? “Little Drummer Boy”.
Thanks for the opportunity ladies!
My favorite Christmas song is Joy To the World. A good reminder to myself what Christmas is really about!
I love Sarah McLachlan’s version of Silent Night.
The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…) by the Carpenters. It’s been my favorite since I was little, and is always the song I look forward to hearing each year. I just love it. (And I sing it horribly, over and over… Ha!)
For me it’s a toss-up between “O Holy Night” and “Carol of the Bells”.
I love the Barenaked Ladies, God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman. But I have to say, I also love the Bandaid song. I just watched the video and wholy smokes! That 80’s fashion was crazy! It sure took me back to those days.
Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” is my favorite.
I have always loved Silent Night. However, this year I am a little sassier, so I must go with I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.
My favorite Christmas song is “Holly Jolly Christmas” sung by Burl Ives in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I actually watched the show by myself this year just to see the Burl Ives-voiced snowman sing it! It instantly takes me back to the late 70s, when my brother and I watched the show together every year. Merry Christmas!
Definitely Silent Night…brings peace to my soul.
I am going with “Baby It’s Cold Outside” – most any version – but especially Vanessa Williams and Bobby Caldwell….
My boyfriend is from Kentucky, and he introduced me to Alabama’s Christmas album, which is just a piece of work. My favorite song is track 6 – Thistlehaire the Christmas bear – but really the whole album is worth a listen, or 12.
Love this giveaway, thank you!
I’d have to say Joy to the World, although I love most all traditional Christmas songs!
Away in a manger, but only when my 5 year old sings it.
Definitely, Jingle Bells!!!
Mine would be the Glee version of “Baby its cold outside” I am a sucker for that song, and to have a new “worldy” version (aka man on man) belting it out just yells “WAKE UP WORLD- THINGS HAVE CHANGED!” I have been dreaming about this ForeRunner all Christmas Season- but alas it is out of my grasp (aka budget). I will pray and wish on a star if need be. Merry Christmas!!
I’ll Be Home For Christmas — the Elvis recording!
“Song for a Winter’s Night” by Sarah McLachlan. It conjurs all things dark and cozy for this time of year.
Baby its cold outside. Loved the Glee version too!
My all time favorite Christmas song is: NOEL. Especially Josh Groban’s version.
Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow” ~ I live in the south and have only ever seen flurries on Christmas Eve ~ but that doesn’t stop my dreams of the beautiful white down covering the landscape and my children sledding or skating on frozen ponds ~ sipping hot chocolate with a scarf on while watching the giant flakes drift gently to the ground ~ the holiday lights reflecting as they twinkle and sparkle. I know plenty of you are grumbling over the hassles that snow brings but in my mind it’s magical!
I love any song from the Trans Siberian Orchestra..”We are waiting’ is probably my most favorite!
White Christmas gets me everytime; my hubby was in Afganistan last year at this time and it broke my heart everytime I heard this song. Although, I’ll be home for Christmas got me pretty good too, tearing up writing this now.
there’s no place like home for the holidays – love it! Always reminds me of the hustle and bustle of Christmas and visiting with family and friends!
Silent night….love this song!
Thanks for a fun giveaway! Merry Christmas!
Julie
I would have to say its cold outside! I love how the guy in the back ground is tring to keep her inside… and she wants to go. kinda like me I want to go! go! go! and something is always triing to hold me back…I am new to running and have a great friend that is helping me get started this year! For the new year I want to run a 5k with out stopping. I hope every one has a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Oh my goodness. To select a favorite Christmas song. I think it would have to be Silent Night simply because it instantly seems to resonate a sacred vibration when singing it.
there’s no place like home for the holidays – love it! Always reminds of the hustle and bustle of Christmas and visiting with family and friends!
My favorite is the theme to a Charlie Brown Christmas. Love the whole soundtrack!
I love The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on An Open Fire). It has been my favourite since I was a young child. Hark the Harold Angels Sing makes me cry … it was my Nana’s favourite song and always makes me think about her.
My favorite song is “Christmas Vacation” from the movie Christmas Vacation. It pretty much sums up exactly how I feel when Christmas gets here – we all need a good vacation 🙂 Happy Holidays and Happy Running!
O Holy Night, hands down. Whethers its Josh Groban, Mariah Carey, Sarah Brightman, or a childrens choir, anyone singing, I just love it. Also a special spot for Greensleeves because that was my moms favorite.
I love Carol of the Bells. I even run to it sometimes! Merry Christmas!
Bruce Sprinsteen’s version of Santa Claus is Coming To Town.
This year my favorite song is whatever my 2 year old is singing. It is so amazing to watch him enjoying the Christmas music! What a great way to get into the Christmas spirit!
Couldn’t have picked a harder question for me to answer, but if I HAVE to pick, I’m going with that song that’s a capella about the little girl Maria bringing the injured bird as a present for baby Jesus… the one that tells the story of the first nightingale song? Yes, that one makes me cry EVERY time I hear it!!
How Many Kings by Down Here… truly the reason for the season!!
Mine is one that probably isn’t very widely known, but it’s a traditional hymn called “Once in Royal David’s City.” The night my husband proposed to me in 2003, we attended a Christmas Lessons & Carols service at Sewanee University’s chapel. This was one of the opening hymns. The service was beautiful, and the proposal AMAZING, so that song always brings back happy memories of Christmas 2003…
Mr Heatmister – actually pretty good for running too 🙂
My favorite holiday song of all times is Silent Night. I just think it’s a beautiful song.
I love “Christmastime in Hollis Queens”!! So fun!
There are so many that make me feel all warm and nostalgic and Christmasy, but the standout one that really makes me dance around and sing is “Heatmiser” from “The Year Without a Santa Claus.” Big Bad Voodoo Daddy does a great version of it! 🙂
“Mary’s Boy Child”, there are lots of versions but I prefer the BE Taylor one. Merry Christmas to all my RLAMs and especially Sarah and Dimity!
My favorite song is Run Rudolph Run — the Chuck Berry version! It is so fun!!
Winter Wonderland and White Christmas! :))
I love “O Holy Night”. For me, it’s what the Christmas season is all about! I also love, “Silent Night” and “Mary, Did You Know?” for the same reasons, to celebrate the birth of Jesus!
So tough to decide, and even harder after reading so many posts. Gonna have to go with Robert Earl Keen “Merry Christmas from the Family”. May not be very sacrad, but how can you not love…
Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk at our Christmas party
We were drinking champagne punch and homemade eggnog
Of course, I made a Christmas CD for the kiddos and while he finds it appropriate to introduce them to all sorts of death metal in the car, I was told that that song was completely out of line for them…Guess he is right!
And thanks for the 12 days of give aways. It was still fun reading all the posts. Just finished the book for the second time and I love the blog and facebook page!
Last Christmas, the Jimmy Eat World version!
It would have to be O Holy Night—brings me to tears every time but now because I can think of my mom singing it as it was one of her absolute favorites.
I’ve been listening to the Glee Christmas Album this Christmas- so my favourite song is from that- Baby it’s Cold Outside.
My favorite Christmas song of all time is Oh Holy Night by Nate King Cole. His voice is awesome and I have never heard anyone sing it as well as him.
“O Holy Night” will always be my favorite! So beautiful!
It’s not necessarily my favorite song, but I love Victor Garber’s version of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”
It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!!!…. because it is! :oD
“All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth,” in honor of my teething baby.
My favorite Christmas song is Mele Kalikimaka. However, the song I hear most on Christmas is Happy Birthday. 🙂 A new Garmin would be a perfect birthday present under the tree!
Almost forgot–also love Christmas at the Zoo by the Flaming Lips. Not quite traditional, but it makes me happy!
It’s difficult to pick one… But for several years I am really tickled by Love Actually Soundtrack. Ultimate Christmas for me!
My favorite Christmas song is The Little Drummer Boy. Such a great picture of giving what we have from our heart. Just a few days ago my son said to me, “Mommy, when they say ‘Mary nodded’ and ‘Then He smiled at me’ I can see it in my mind”. Tears!!
I ❤ "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses
alan jackson, let it be Christmas. Also Silent Night. and little drummer boy… I could go on and on…Merry Christmas to all you RLAMS!
Totally STUMPED!! So many songs, I love love love White Christmas, Santa Clause is coming to town, Jingle Bells, but I have to say Dominic the Donkey, ’cause it’s just too much fun and I’m 100% I-Tie – so that’s a brainer!!!
I have really enjoyed Christmas Canon. And All I Want for Christmas by Mariah Carey is a classic in our house—we all enjoy singing along to that one.
I love “Mary, Did you know?” as my all time favorite and then “Do they know it’s Christmas” is runner up! 🙂
My fav is White Christmas by Iggy Pop!
White Christmas sung by Bing Crosby is one of my favorite Christmas Mood inspiring songs.
Spiritual based would be O Holy Night, hands down.
I REALLY would make excellent use of this Garmin, you’d make me a VERY happy girl!!
Go Tell it on the Mountain. Blind Boys of Alabama. Enough said.
My favorite Christmas Song is “Oh Holy Night”. I am not particularly religious, but this song is sacred and beautiful.. just represents the season to me. Happy Santa Days!
I have to say, I have to agree with “Do you know it’s Christmas” and the Bono bit…
Along the same lines, I feel like I can never properly get into the Holiday spirit until I hear U2’s ” Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” … it’s U2, it’s fun to sing along with and dance to (yes, I said “dance”… something I rarely ever do). A few years ago, my husband bought it for me on CD, but he knows it never really counts until I hear it on the radio. No idea why, maybe it’s the element of surprise when it comes over the airwaves vs the CD player.
Anyway, it can easily transform my mood from grumpy-Scrooge-like to super-cheery-holiday-excited-woohoo-must-go-out-and-run-around. And if I had a Garmin, I might pace that “run-around” mood a little better… !
Choosing just one seems difficult… There’s O Holy Night (LOVE) and Lucy and Linus from a Charlie Brown Christmas, James Taylor’s “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” but I do love, most of all – i think, the relatively unknown, “What a Wonderful Beginning.” Merry Christmas Dimity, Sarah and the whole RLAM Tribe!
Go tell it on the Mountain or when the kids at church sing Felix Navidad because they get so into it and it’s the pastors favorite!
He! I am excited for christmas and the garmin, though I am tempted to get it set up so that after presents I can get a run in before Christmas dinner prep! and my hubby is slightly jealous but says he hasn’t made up his mind!
Oh so many songs to pick from! If I had to pick one, I would say Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee. Hope you have a wonderful holiday! Thanks for all the advice this year!
Hands down, “O Holy Night”. Christmas often times seems to get so commercialized focusing on gifts, Santa Claus, Ho Ho Ho, Jingle bells and all that, etc. The song represents the real meaning of the season– Our saviours birth. Everytime I hear it, it makes the little hairs on my arms raise and gives me little goosebumps. Simply a beautiful song that truly makes me smile and gives a gentle reminder of what Christmas is all about.
Can I pick two?! One happy and one that chokes me up: the original “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt is always fun and makes me feel a bit naughty but “Little Drummer Boy” sung by David Bowie and Bing always gives me pause, and grounds me to the real meaning of the season….sigh.
Hark The Herald Angels Sing, sung by Charlie Brown and the gang. How can you not just love that classic Christmas show, and seeing all their heads raised up to sing that great song…I just love it every time! So much so, that the soundtrack is my #1 played album for a month straight!
1 Christmas song is so hard to pick. I love singing Rudolph with my daughter but I love listening to any version of the Little Drummer Boy. I also love the instrumentals by Trans-Siberian Orchestra especially – Christmas Eve Sarajevo
O Holy Night, the Nat King Cole version. Brings me to tears!
It’s too hard to choose just one… Probably Jingle Bells because that’s one of my daughter’s favorites and I adore hearing her singing it. Merry Christmas Everyone!
Hands down…”Please Come Home For Christmas” by Jon Bon Jovi. Why? Well….it’s Jon Bon Jovi….’nuff said 😉 He just may be the sexiest man EVER!
I have ALOT of Bon Jovi songs on my 1/2 marathon training playlist….race date is 2/6/11…my 1st!!!! EEK!!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Mannheim Steamroller’s Carol of the Bells.
Whether working out, shopping ’til you drop, or busting out an all-nighter cookie session, this song just gets you pumping and full of the holiday spirit!
My favorite Christmas song is Christmas Canon by Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Mele Kalikimaka – the song from the pool scene in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation…,”she’s a beaute, Clark.”
Carol of the bells
Carol of the bells, the grinch song and santa clause is commin’ to town. Im Mrs. mainstream when it comes to my Christmas music. It puts the holly directly into my jolly.
I love so many songs, but I’m always moved by the haunting nature of “What Child Is This” especially because I think it applies to every mom–we have no idea the potential of the children who we hold and cuddle.
I love many of them, but my favorite to sing with the kids in the car, while we all bust out in uncontrollable laughter is “I Farted on Santa’s Lap” by The Little Stinkers.
It has to be Sleigh Ride performed by the Boston Pops!
Easy, my favorite Christmas song is Feliz Navidad!!
My favorite is “Little St Nick” by the Beachboys. I grew up in CA before moving to the NW and nomatter that we actually have “winter” weather here, whenever I hear that song I can feel the santa annas blowing and see the palm trees waving and I remember what christmas was like there when I was a child, where we always listened to my step dad’s beachboys christmas record.
Christmas Offering by Casting Crowns, such a great reminder of why we celebrate Christmas!
I should be more embarrassed by this answer: Bing Crosby and David Bowie’s version of Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth. I love it.
Silent Night is my all time favorite, and it’s even more special this year because my son practised for hours to be able to play it on the piano for our extended family on Christmas Eve!
I’d have to say that John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)” has to be the best song ever!
As much as I’m not typically a Mariah Carey fan, I can’t get enough of her “All I Want for Christmas”.
Ahh so many good ones. But since I was a kid it has been Jingle Bell Rock, even had a dance routine for this! x
My favorate Christmas song is “Come, All Ye Faithful.” “And in his name, all oppression shall cease.”
My fav is listening to my kids sing away in a manger! Reminds me why we celebrate Christmas !
Maybe not a Christmas song, but I love ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ , the Dean Martin version (and the Zooey Deschanel one!)
O holy Night. I’m not even Christian but this song just gets me.
It has to be Handel’s Messiah. Amazing. Gives me goosebumps every time.
River by Joni Mitchell. Love it.
My favorite Christmas songs are “O Holy Night” and “Baby It’s Cold Outside”.
I love the traditional Silent Night. The history behind it is enough to make one stop and ponder about what’s really important.
Jingle Bells, sung by my 3 1/2 year old. Doesn’t get much better than that!
My favorite is my little ones singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer – their voices express their sheer excitement for the holidays…which always gets me in the right mood for dashing through the long list of things to do to get ready.
“Angels we Have Heard on High” (the Gloria in Excelsis Deo song.)
Love it!
My favorite right now is Malikalemaka as I am sitting at the airport getting ready to fly to Hawaii!
O Holy Night is my all time favorite.
This year my favourite has been George Michael’s song (that was re-done on Glee) “Last Chrstmas”.
But my all time fav is Silent Night, it brings me back to high school when I sang in the a capella choir. A beautiful time of year for singing!
My favorite Christmas song is “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”
Enya’s Silent Night, which she sings in Gaelic. So quietly beautiful it reminds me of the magic and mystery of Christmas from when I was a little girl. Christmas can be so hurried and hectic, listening always makes me pause and breath for a moment. I have a fantasy of going for a Christmas run in the woods with this playing- someday when kiddo is old enough for his single mom to leave alone to have that break! Until then, it will play while I am wrapping the last of the presents and thinking of how much the people receiving these gifts mean to me.
“I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day” (sung by Sarah Mclachlan) – it gets me teary eyed. Originally a poem by Longfellow, it makes such a beautiful song…and a good reminder of what this season is really about. Peace on earth, goodwill to men (and women!).
Amy Grant’s, Breath of Heaven (Mary’s Song). Absolutely beautiful song. Always takes me back to the many Christmas seasons I spent helping my mom decorate the house for the season while listening to that CD.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings by Barenaked Ladies featuring Sarah McLachlan. Great version!
My favorite holiday song is Mele Kalikimaka by Bing Crosby. Really anything by Bing Crosby I love… it reminds me of Christmas as a kid and all the happy memories from a much simpler time in life. Happy Holidays, ladies!
We Need Alittle Christmas by the Glee Cast. My birthday is Christmas day and I will be turning 40! This is one year that I am happy that I have a Christmas Birthday (I am hoping with all the Christmas excitment from my 3 kids and hubby we can pass this birthday right by!!) The Glee cast always brightens the mood!!
call me corny, but my favorite Christmas song is the Muppets 12 Days of Christmas, singing along as loud as I can with my kids. 🙂
My favorite is Little Drummer Boy! Magical!
Love John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas (War is Over)” and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” (I think the movie Love Actually has something to do with the latter… 🙂 )
Easy! My most favorite song is “Do you know what I know”. So beautiful it captures, for me, the true Christmas! Merry Christmas everyone.
I have a favorite Christmas song- a non-traditional one, at that. It is “Mary’s Boy Child/ O My Lord” by Boney M. It has a disco-y beat and I can’t help get moving when I hear it! If you have never heard it before, check it out this year!
I’ve always been a sucker for ‘Baby its cold outside’. Such a classic!
My favorite is The River, sung by Robert Downey Jr. Not the most impressive vocals, but I love the way he sings it.
Normally, It’s the “Do you know it’s christmas…” ,I love Simon Le Bon!!! But this year it’s my toddlers version of Jingle Bells, goes a little something like this…,”Jingle belsh,Jingle Belsh, Santa, santa, santa…santa, santa, fireplace, presents, presents…JESUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
Winter Wonderland! Probably because I sooooo don’t live in a snowy, wintery place. Christmas eve will be 80 degrees! A “cold” front comes in that night so Christmas day will be a blustery 65! LOL!
Gramma Got Run Over By a Reindeer!!!
That’s tough. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen–BNL version, is my fave, but also love any Ella Fitzgerald song from “Ella’s Swinging Christmas”
I want a hippopatomus for Christmas
O holy night…beautiful 🙂
I’m born and bred in Baltimore, so for me if I don’t hear “Crabs for Christmas”, my Christmas is not complete! It’s a Baltimore thing, hon!!
Loving a gorgeous new one by Barlow girl
Wow, I’d love that Garmin!
Mary, runner since August, mom of 10
ran FIRST race Dec 18th!
Without a doubt..O holy night. Sung by Michael Crawford. No matter how many times I hear it I get chills down my spine! I love it!
Okay my name is Christine, I have no idea why it posted as “Christmas” lol!
I have to admit, I really don’t like Christmas music, but I always get a good laugh out of the Bob Dyln’s “Must be Santa” video!
I think “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” is probably my favorite as far as the words go. However, this year I’m really enjoying “Frosty the Snowman” because my 4 year old really gets into singing it.
I absolutely adore “O Holy Night.” I always tear up at the line “fall on your knees…”
I have two favorites. And they both tend towards the melancholy:
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, either the Pretenders’ version, or Coldplay. The part about muddling through somehow? Sad and tender, and true.
The River, by Joni Mitchell. Or done by Robert Downey, Jr. It just makes my heart ache.
On the less melancholy side, I can’t help but love Santa Lost a Ho, by the Christmas Jug Band.
Oh Holy Night.
Merry Christmas!
Do they know it’s Christmas…and I love Bono’s line as well!
Happy Holidays!
“My Christmas Prayer” by Bebe Winans. Not my usual style for music in general and I love all the traditional Christmas carols (Sinatra, Bing, etc.) but this song is so hopeful and makes me happy.
my favorite Christmas song is Mele Kalikimaka.
little drummer boy by josh groban
Definitely “Baby It’s Cold Outside”–LOVED the version on Glee, and “Last Christmas”. the Glee Christmas CD is the absolute BEST!
Carrie Underwood’s version of Hark the Herald Angels Sing. So beautiful.
As a midwife, I have to say, “A Bzby Changes Everything “
My favourite has got to be O Come O Come Emmanuel done with full organ and choir. My house is full of the classics though, like The Huron Carol, Joy to the World and Good Christian Men Rejoice.
“It’s True” by Sara Groves. Her son introduces the song and it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it! It reminds me of my sweet little boy and how thankful I am to be making Christmas memories with him and my husband.
my favorite holiday song is “I’ll be home for Christmas”…thanks!
I like This is Christmas by Celine Dion and Oh Holy Night by josh Grobin. and the Glee christams albumn!!!!
Most beloved holiday song: Silent Night – preferably sung by my kiddos or some honest to goodness carolers! It sends me to childhood and Christmas Eve church services. Jingle Bells sung by the boys is a pretty close runner-up!
When I was little my Aunt used to babysit my sister and I when my dad worked 16 hour days for the refinery and my mom worked Repo for the IRS. My Uncle had the most amazing voice and used to sing year round but I have amazing memories of him singing White Christmas and O Christmas Tree. To this day those two songs bring tears to my eyes. My uncle passed away 4 and a half years ago but his voice will live forever in my heart and this time of year in my ears.
Any Christmas Carol sung by my kids’ choir – especially those from the Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols.
Fairytale of New York by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl- hands down!
I love that song too.
Anything playing on my cheesy but beloved TV Fireplace DVD!!! 🙂
My favorite Christmas song is Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, love my daughter chanting “Like a Lightbulb!”.
I am loving Straight No Chaser’s song titled 12 Days of Christmas. I heard it the first time this year and every time I hear it I smile!
My all-time favorite Christmas song is O Holy Night. *sigh* It brings peace to my soul.
Jingle Bells, specifically the version my children sing regarding the smelliness of Batman.
Why, Chuck Berry’s Run Run Rudolph of course!
Can I be interfaith here? I know Hanukkah is over and this is for the twelve days of Christmas, but Adam Sandler’s “Chanukkah Song” totally cracks me up. On the mainstream side of the holidays, I love Jingle Bells. The words are easy enough for even the smalled kids to sing and everyone really gets into singing, especially a large group. Smiles all around!
I love “I want a hipopotamous for Xmas”
I never heard this song as a child as I was born and raised in Mexico, but when I heard it from the first time, when I was in college in Texas, it became my Xmas hymn. It is all about fun, and wishing something so bad from the bottom of your heart, even as absurd as it sounds. I am known for always wanting to have the last word on arguments, and I love how the little girl in the song has an answer for everything her mommy tells her about the hippo. Pure determination, and fun!
that’s me.
I have a Kohl’s Christmas CD that has More by Bobby Darin on it. Even though it’s not really a Christmas song, it reminds me of the holidays and I pretty much only hear it around xmas because of that CD.
Silent Night.
The Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack.Makes me so happy!
It’s a tie between Joy to the World and Silent Night – both are SO beautiful to sing. And what a coincidence that this is your grand finale question! Tonight is our neighborhood’s caroling night and a bunch of us will be heading out in the misty rain to repeat, repeat, the sounding joy!
Johnny Mathis’ singing “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.”. He melts my butter.
There is nothing I love better than the New Year and New Year’s Eve. It is a universal holiday of goodwill.
I love, cherish and believe it is a mini miracle to be able to hope for peace, joy and excitement for all things in the new year. Each year, I love the memories of old years, cherish the moment, and look forward to the next. Plus, I love sneaking a kiss from my husband even if I am tucked under the covers at midnight because the rest of the holiday cheer with the family wore me out.
Thus, I love, love Auld Lang Syne especially by Pink Martini (on their Joy to the World Album).
Happy Holidays!
Shelley Buckholtz
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. And anything my kids sing…
Oh my new favorite Christmas song is “I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”. It’s just too cute & makes me smile every time I hear it.!
The hymn “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” is wonderous. But I do have a special place in my heart for Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”. Strange combo, I know.
Marshmellow World, Dean Martin
Reminds me of my father, playing the songs of his youth
Little Drummer Boy!! Happy Holidays!!
love that the two winners both sacrifice sleep!
anyways, my favorite holiday song is silent night, love love love it. i used to play it on the piano when i was little. i also LOVE the nutcracker soundtrack 🙂
My favorite Christmas song is “The Carol of the Bells” by Trans Siberian Orchestra. It gets me pumped everytime I hear it on the CD or radio.
I’m definitely not a traditional Christmas music fan – I like my music a little more upbeat so my favorites are All I Want for Christmas is You – Mariah Carey (pretty much the only Mariah Carey song I like). Also, Glee’s version of Last Christmas and Santa Claus is Coming to Town – Bruce Springsteen.
Tell us your favorite holiday song: Welcome Christmas from the Excelsis Dark Noel CD! (The song is originally from The Grinch who stole Christmas I believe)
LOVE Christmas music…I think my favorite is the Charlie Brown Christmas music. My kids are totally obsessed with the Mr. Grinch song this year though. P.S. My birthday is tomorrow. : )
This is a hard one for me because I love every Christmas song. I would have to say the one I like best is I’ll be Home for Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone!
Merry Christmas, Moms! My favorite song is “The Christmas Song” by the Carpenters. I have loved it since I was a little girl. Runner up is “Tennessee Christmas” by Amy Grant.
Does it have to be a recorded song? If not, my fav is “O Come All Ye Faithful” sung at church each Christmas Eve, preferably with a large congregation and good organ accompaniment.
Otherwise, it’s a tie between three songs. I love “Colorado Christmas” by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, not least because my oldest was born 10 days before Christmas and then spent a week in the NICU. She made it home before Christmas and that Christmas is still the reason that the lyrics “the closest thing to heaven on this planet anywhere / is a quiet Christmas morning in the Colorado snow” can still bring me to tears–perhaps more than usual this year because my 9-month-old will be celebrating her first Christmas here too. We spend every other Christmas in upstate New York with my husband’s family, so it’s very special to be at home in Colorado for Christmas.
Connie Francis’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” with the lyrics “through the years we all will be together, if the fates allow” always reminds me of celebrating holidays with relatives who have since passed on.
And there’s Ella Fitzgerald’s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” which reminds me of how my husband and I got together 15 years ago. We’d had one of those “are we friends or more than friends” long-distance relationships, so I finally decided to bite the bullet, visit him in person over the holidays and figure out whether we should be a couple or not. It seemed like be there when the ball dropped and everyone hugged and kissed might clarify things, and if not, I’d just ask him straight out. As it turns out, he brought it up when I arrived on the 30th, so we were “officially” a couple by New Year’s Eve.
Oops, one sentence in the last paragraph should have read “It seemed like being there when the ball dropped and everyone hugged and kissed might clarify things, and if not, I’d just ask him straight out.” I blame all typos on the baby in my lap! 😉
My favourite traditional one is Do You Hear What I Hear –
My favourite non-traditional song is Fairytale of New York, by the Pogues…. that gets me jumping and motivated very quickly!
I love Up on the Rooftop and It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. I also love all on the Glee Christmas album
The song that just popped into my head when I read your post was “Baby It’s Cold Outside”. It happens to be one of my favorites but it really resonated with today’s run. My running partner and I almost didn’t get to finish our last scheduled 20 miler because the wind was so bad. For the first time we were actually getting colder the longer we ran. Glad I decided not to leave my coat behind. We did finish and had another first time event…my coat and pants were totally frozen. My whole front covered with a sheet of ice so much that I crunched with every move. We were laughing so hard the last three miles flew by. Thank goodness since my Acclerade had turned to slush and my bottle tops were frozen shut.
George michael’s Last Christmas I gave you my heart… I admit this somewhat sheepishly!
I absolutely, without a doubt, love, Love, LOVE “Unspeakable Joy” by Chris Tomlin.
Other faves are Away in a Manger & O Come All Ye Faithful.
I love “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” – the reason for the season!
Carol of the Bells. I love all of them!
My favorite christmas song right now is “His Favorite Christmas Story” by Capital Lights. I heard it a few days ago on the radio, and now I have the song on repeat on my computer.
White Christmas! It’s a classic for a reason and I love it.
Feliz Navidad – I don’t speak Spanish but I always feel bilingual when that song comes on. Plus I love that my 3 yr old knows all the words.
Away in the Manager … that’s my fav!
Thanks for the chance to win 🙂
Oh, Holy Night and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
My favorite Christmas song is, “O Holy Night” I don’t care who sings it…it is beautiful every time I hear it!
White Christmas and Baby it’s cold outside.
Tough to name just one because I love so many. Faith Hill: “Where are you, Christmas?”
I’ve always loved “Baby It’s Cold Outside” with Zooey Deschanel from the Elf Soundtrack. But now I’m loving the Glee version! Bing Crosby singing “White Christmas” is another favorite.
I have a bunch of faves but one that stands out for me is “Hark Hear the Bells” – so beautiful!
I LOVE the instrumental from Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas!!
Vince Gauraldi’s “Christmas Time is Here” is my favorite Christmas song.
I’ll Be Home For Christmas….so beautiful and poignant. Also, the Little Drummer Boy as sung by David Bowie and Bing Crosby — what an odd pairing, but the result was stunning.
I love Sting’ s version of Gabriel ‘s Song.
The Christmas Song…sung by Nat King Cole. So classic!
As a kid, my fav was always Little Drummer Boy (I loved the ra-pum-pum-pum-pum part). And now, I guess, it reminds me a little of my own Little Drummer Boy that is my 15-month-old, who loves to drum!
“Silent Night”. I am not at all religious (a lapsed Catholic), but the beauty and serene qualities of this song (and yes, the memories of signing this at midnight mass on Christmas Eve) brings me such joy. Happy Holidays to all the RLAMers!
I love Christmas songs, so many favorites! All I want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey always makes me want to get up and dance, and I love to just sit and listen to O Holy Night.
Oh Holy Night as sung by the Portland Symphonic Girlchoir. I am moved to tears every time I hear this performed by these beautiful, talented young ladies.
reverting back to my inner middle-school girl, my favorite “belt it as loud as you can” Christmas song has to be All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey. To my delight, it tops the seasons list of “most over played Christmas tunes” every year.
“drummer boy” and “we three kings”
I am pretty much “christmas’ed out” after two spin classes of JUST christmas music, but if I had to pick… Drummer Boy!
Mine is “Mary Did You Know”, which I had not heard before I was a mother. It gives me goosebumps everytime.
In honor of my Dad who turned me on to the Kingston Trio shortly after I was born, I would say one of my all time favorites is “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” by the Kingston Trio, from their “The Last Month Of The Year” album, circa 1960.
Josh Groban’s “O Holy Night.” Makes me smile and bawl at the same time every time he hits he high note! It’s actually in my running mix (the cool-down portion) for the holidays!
The one I crank up in my car after I’ve deposited the kids in their various locations is Christmas for Cowboys sung by John Denver . . . I love it for the line “of all of the good gifts that are given today, ours is the sky and the wide open range . . . ” Come to think of it, that’s why I love running too . . for the sky and the wide open range.
“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee
Lifetime favorite is The Little Drummer Boy. Adult favorites, Baby It’s Cold Outside (any version really, but fell in love with it in Elf). And any of the Christmas songs from Aaron Nevill’s album, although his version of Ave Maria takes my breath away.
Merry Christmas to everyone! And Many Good Runs in the future!
It’s impossible to choose just one favorite, however today I am singing the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah – I just finished my last day in 2010 with my 26 adorable first graders! PS – Thanks for the 12K’s! Great idea and great prizes.
My kids love Feliz Navidad … we rock out to it in the car …. at least for now it’s my favorite. Thanks!
Jingle bells. I like the words “Dashing through the snow…”. I picture my self running through snow while it is snowing. I just love the snow and wish it would snow, all we have had is rain:(. Happy Holidays.
My favorite Christmas song today is Christmas Must be Tonight by Hall & Oates.
carol of the bells, preferably the Trans Siberian Orchestra version
My favorite is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You”!
My favorite Christmas song is Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney.
My favorite song at Christmas in “The Twelve Pains of Christmas”. We can all relate- cracks me up every time- “rigging up the lights, why are the blinking??”, my husband and I have sooo been there, also “Sending Christmas cards- who are these people anyway?”.
On a serious note, I love Joy to the World. Reminds me of the true meaning of Christmas, not the commercial holiday we have made it. My sons preschool class just sang it at his concert, cried through the entire thing.
I love anything by Josh Groban, but my favorite is him singing O Holy Night!
Can I have 2? “joy to the world” and “o holy night”, they really give me the holiday magic feeling!
Oooh, pick me!
I would have to say my favorite song would have to be… Oh, Holy Night sung in my native language. 🙂
Here is a link…
Tough to choose, but right now I am loving Straight No Chaser’s 12 Days of a Christmas. For a more traditional song, I really really like Little Drummer Boy by just about anyone. Merry Christmas!
I saw Mama kissing Santa Clause….
Love that song always makes me smile!
Lady Antebellum-Silver Bells=
“The Christmas Shoes!” Makes me cry every single time!
I heard one on the radio today called “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”, that just may be my new fav!!!
It’s a toss up between In the Bleak Midwinter, and Lo’ How a Rose Er Blooming.
My favorite Christmas song is Happy Holidays by Steve Lawrence and Edie Gourmet. It was on a Christmas album from the A&P ( a grocery store) that my parents had when I was growing up. My sister and I would each take a part and sing away! When we were older, we even sang it on my parents’ answering machine during the holidays! That song holds a lot of fond memories for me.
O Holy Night and Silent Night would be my all time favourites but I love just about all Christmas carols and love listening to them all day long during the month of December!
My favorite song would be Santa’s Super Sleigh from the movie About A Boy.
This Jew loves “O Holy Night” as performed by Trombone Shorty on the one season wonder show, Studio 60. It was a group of displaced musicians from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and the music was so lovely it made me cry. It was a moment of beauty in the aftermath of such utter horror. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slizJQpVOOg (you have to watch a minute or two first)
lots to pick from but Christmas Song by Dave Matthews is one I like to listen to! Thanks for all the great giveaways.
My favorite is the Christmas song by Dave Matthews. I just love the way he sings. 🙂
Very hard to choose just one but if I have to pick one right now I’d say Silent Night.
My favorite song for the holidays is “soul cake.”. I’m not sure who originally sang it but the version of it I am currently listening to is by Sting. It’s about helping needy people at christmas. I sang it in elementary school and it made quite an impression on me. It still makes me cry.
“Santa Must Be Polish,” by Bobby Vinton. My dad’s been playing it for me at Christmas for, oh, 38 years.
Not a traditional holiday song, but conjures up holiday-ness for me any time of year…”2000 Miles” by the Pretenders.
My favorite holiday song is “This Christmas” by Donnie Hathaway. It has a bit of a romantic feel to it. It’s the only holiday song that I don’t mind hearing year round, I luv it!! 🙂
Burl Ives: “Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas”…
The Little Drummer Boy keeps me happy every year
My new favorite non-traditional Christmas song is Don’t Shoot Me Santa by The Killer’s. Fave traditional song is The First Noel.
My favorite christmas song is the Chipmunk Christmas song (Christmas don’t be late). I remember listening to it when I was a little kid, and I still love it!
Aw, c’mon, how can anyone argue against Andy Williams’ “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” as THE BEST Christmas song?? Simply classic! (Or anything by The Carpenters!)
My favorite is Baby, It’s Cold Outside. It’s kinda sexy.
Wow that is so strange and unusual!! My favorite holiday song is ALSO Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas!! So cool, but I guess we just have good taste in music!!
Hapy Holidays!
My favorite holiday song is “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas”! Just a fun song and the kids love it too! Thanks to SBS and Dimity for the giveaways and all the great advice! Have a great Christmas and New Year!
I can’t believe I’m going to admit this, but this year, hands down, my favorite song is ‘Must Be Santa’ by Raffi. When my kids get excited and belt out this song to me, it makes me laugh and smile every time! My kids are 3 and 5 and are really enjoying the spirit of Christmas this year.
O Holy Night. The lyrics for all four stanzas are beautiful. I never get tired of it!
Silver Bells. My second grade class performed that song in our holiday program and it’s still one of my favorite childhood memories.
O holy night. Or anything sung by Bing Crosby!!!
So, so many songs that put me in the spirit…if I have to choose just one, it’s “Oh Holy Night”. I really love and appreciate the message of the song, however, it will always remind me of attending midnight mass in a small Catholic church in rural Missouri as a child. It never failed that the same person, year after year, attempted the song and always INCREDIBLEY OFF KEY. My siblings and I would get the shakes while stifling the giggles…inevitably eliciting sideways glares from the locals.
My favorite is Do They Know It’s Christmas, by – Band Aid
It’s makes you think of the less fortunate and reminds you of what Christmas is all about.
Gotta be “Christmas Carol”!
Mary’s Boy Child (the reggae/calypso version). It makes me want to dance!
But I’m Jewish, so my REAL favorite is Adam Sandler’s Hanukkah Song. 🙂
Beautiful Savior – always the last song sung at my college Christmas program. I love the tradition.
Winter Wonderland. I don’t know why. Actually I don’t really like it that much. But it’s the one song I can’t get out of my head the entire Holiday season!
Too many to choose one…I “Mary Did You Know” and “Baby It’s Cold Outside”
We have a Dean Martin Christmas CD that just makes me melt. So I”m going with ‘Walkin’ in a Winter Wonderland’ by Deano!
Silent night
Wow! Lots of comments, and lots of great songs! Like quite a few before, I also love the BNL “God Rest Ye…”
Harry Connick, Jr’s album is another favorite, but our family’s go-to album for a few years now has been the “Take 6” Christmas album. It’s fantastic – great a capella.
My daughter has been playing Christmas stuff on the piano every morning since Thanksgiving – hearing her play great renditions of many classics ranks up there, too! And while I type this, I’m being treated (??) to a clarinet and trombone rendition of Jolly Old St. Nick…hmmmm…..might be time to go out for a run!
Thanks for hosting the 12K’s – super fun!
I’m a Bama girl, so Alabama’s “Christmas in Dixie” is at or near the top of my list!
Without a doubt, Silent Night. It is so beautiful and it never gets on my nerves. There is a version by Faith Hill that gives me goosebumps. Love it!
“Do they know it’s Christmas” brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. We all need to realize how fortunate we are to have family, friends and health.
There is just something special about Away In A Manger. Merry Christmas!
I just added Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas” to my running playlist. I’m considering leaving it year round 🙂
Rockin’ around the christmas tree by Brenda Lee. I am her namesake afterall.
Definitely Happy Christmas by John Lennon
Jingle Bell Rock, hands down. It was the first Christmas carol my 7 year old learned as a toddler and he was REALLY into this song. So much so that when he was three and his preschool class’ fish died, during the “service” when asked if he wanted to say something about the fish he insisted on leading the group in a rousing rendition of Jingle Bell Rock. It was summertime. Pricless
My fave- by Transiberrian Orchestra, A Mad Russian’s Christmas… enjoy!!!
My favorite is Do They Know It’s Christmas by Band Aid.
It make you think of the less fortunate and reminds you what Christmas is all about.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan. And almost any version of O Holy Night. The ‘fall on my knees’ line gets me every time.
Christmas Canon by Trans-Siberian Orchestra for sure. It combines wedding music and Christmas for a super uplifting song. It’s like a double dose of love and happiness. You can’t get any better than that!
I’m not a Mariah Carey fan except for her version of “All I Want for Christmas is You” Makes me want to dance around. I even have it on my ipod for running during the holiday season!
It has to be “I saw mommy kissing santa claus!” Brings back sweet memories of being a lil girl and my dad dressing upas Santa and he thought I didn’t know it was him! 🙂
Away in the manger
My favorite Christmas song is my brother’s version of “Jingle Bell Rock” which involves considerably more swearing than the original 🙂
Ok honestly my favorite Christmas song is “the muppets 12 days of Christmas”
No matter what, that song always cracks me up. The part with Beaker and his “meep meep’s” is so cute and funny.
My new favorite is “Oh Come Emmanuel” by Enya but still love “Oh Holy Night” by Aaron Neville.
It has to be “I’ll be home for Christmas”…I have now lived AWAY from my Mom and siblings as long as I lived WITH them. We stay connected, of course, but it’s nothing like being together for the holidays. Now, the next generation gets to share in the traditions I had as a kid.
All I Want for Christmas is You is my #1 favorite holiday song and while nothing is better than Mariah (in the case of this song only, normally she causes a huge case of PTSD from my viewing of Glitter), this year I discovered the version of the song by the Puccini Sisters which is like that song, minus Mariah and plus Boardwalk Empire, which is perfection.
My favorite Christmas song – pretty much any version of “Baby it’s cold outside”. This year, I’m loving the Glee version, but another fav is the James Taylor/Natalie Cole duet.
O holy night by Josh Grobin gives me chills every time!
Definitely “O Come All Ye Faithful” in any version. A close runner up is “Mad Russian Christmas” by Trans Siberian Orchestra.
I live Jingle Bell Rock! What a cool watch!!!
Fav. song, is Sufjan Steven’s version of The Friendly Beasts. Amazing. 🙂
My favorite holiday music is the entire soundtrack to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. Whenever I hear the song “Christmas is Coming” I want to dance like Snoopy 🙂
My favorite holiday song is jingle bells sung by my 5yr old and 8 yr old. Anything really sung by my kids. Priceless…
“O Holy Night” gives me chills when it’s sung well but I also love the BareNaked Ladies version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” !
Mary Did You Know or Carol of the Bells, even narrowing it down to those two is difficult!
Kelly Clarkson’s O Holy Night – Its so beautifully done. The entire first verse is acapella. Its just Kelly and that big ole voice..so powerful and controlled. The chorus joins in later, which adds another dimension to the song….the Holy dimension! It will make the hair on the back of your neck stand at attention! To me, this song captures the true meaning of Christmas. I just love it!!!
Breath of Heaven by Amy Grant—-can’t get enough of it! This year, Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas” is giving it a run for its money, though!
Silent night hands down…I have loved it since I was little girl:)
Love the song “Emmanuel” by Amy Grant
Harry Connick Jr.’s (It Must’ve Been Ol’) Santa Claus is my favorite…Happy Ho Ho Ho to You!
Sleigh Ride is my favorite. As soon as I hear it the Christmas Season has begun!
O Holy Night. It’s what Christmas is all about. Of course, I am a sucker for Adam Sandler’s Chanukah songs, too!
OK, I have two:
1.) Reverent, reason-for-the-season’ish: O Come O Come Immanuel. Gives me shivers.
2.) Fun and irreverent: Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses! “A&P has provided me with the world’s smallest turkey, already in the oven, nice & hot….”
Great giveway – fun series!
Nat King Cole, O holy Night.
Go Tell it on the Mountain – Garth Brooks (yes, Garth Brooks) does a great version on his “Beyond the Season” CD.
“Santa Clause is Coming to Town” – my 4& 5 yrs old say “you better be good, for goodness steak”. 🙂
“Oh Holy Night” but ONLY when it is sung well. And there is a lady at my church who, I promise you, this song was written for. She knocks it out of the park every Christmas Eve and has reuined me for almost anyone else!
But, for fun, I also am rockin the Glee Christmas album this year! Love it!!
Favorite favorite holiday song is, “Mary, Did You Know?” This song captures the true meaning of Christmas.
‘O Come all Ye Faithful’ hands down. I can hum it quietly with a smile in a consumer swarmed store, even when waiting with tired, cranky kids, and still feel peace remembering what we are really celebrating this season.
Right now I am loving Harry Connick Jr.’s Frosty the Snowman. Has an awesome jazzy beat, and happens to be a favorite on my running playlist during the Christmas season. If it doesn’t get you running in cold weather, nothing will!
Sleigh Ride, the Ella Fitzgerald version!
My new favorite holiday song is an all-time Christmas classic set to the tune of a great song from my generation. The 12 Days of Christmas, sung by the acapella group Straight No Chaser, is set to the tune of Toto’s hit, Africa. If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s sure to be a favorite of yours soon. Check it out online.
Silent night. It’s the second to last song during midnight mass. The lights are turned down and it is beautiful. (The last song is upbeat and loud to wake everyone for the drive home.)
I can actually hear the ‘clunk’ sound of the 8-track player as it changes songs to ……
The BEST. CHRISTMAS. SONG. EVAH…..
Ray Conniff – “Sleigh Ride”
😀
Go Tell It On The Mountain. When my 5 and 3 year old children sing it.
Barenaked Ladies Holiday album “Barenaked for the Holidays” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is the best!!! Happy Holidays!!!
Silent night is my fav (partly because that’s what I crave). Ps. I REALLY REALLY want the 110. I’ve been a good girl. I promise!!!!
John Lennon – Happy Christmas (War is Over)! Just love it!!
No question – O Holy Night. I have so many different versions it’s scary. My 4 year old’s favorite is Joy to the World, which I’ve never liked until I heard her belt it enthusiastically in the car. It’s actually on my running playlist right now.
John Lennon – Happy Christmas (War is Over) Just love this one!!!
Sorry posted twice
Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer always brings me back to my childhood and it makes me laugh!
“Santa Baby” b/c it’s kinda saucy and hot, like me LOL
Definitely The Waitresses “Christmas Wrapping” and Band Aids “Do They Know It’s Christmas”!!!! Hope I win this round!! What an awesome prize!! I am crossing fingers and toes.
“Hard Candy Christmas” by Dolly Parton. It’s kinda cheesy, but she just has such a sweet voice. I love it!
O Holy Night. I think it is definitely the song that truly stops me when I get in my hustle and bustle of this season and just nudges me with that gentle reminder as to what this season is truly about. And makes me truly thankful for everything I am so blessed with!
“All I want for Christmas” I loved the movie “love actually” and this was kind of the theme song…i smile every time I hear that song.
it’s a tie between Otis Redding’s White Christmas, and my mom playing Silver Bells on the piano.
‘I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas’. Even before babies I thought this was the cutest song! Now that I have a nearly 5 year old, I totally get it! He changes his mind everyother day about what he wants!
My favorite lyrics to a Christmas song are: ‘So really I’d better scurry – Beautiful, please don’t hurry. Well maybe just a half a drink more – Put some music on while I pour’……..easy not to scurry to bed and have another cocktail with my hubby on these cold MN nights!
It’s gotta be silent night – a classic and my favorite! Especially on Christmas eve with the lights out and everyone holding candles. Makes me tear up every time!
With a three year old this year, it’s definitely “Here Comes Santa Clause”
‘Zat You Santa Claus by Louis Armstrong & The Commanders!
12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS. From the age of 5, my family of 7 loaded into our conversion and took road trips from Michigan to Colorado for our annual ski vacation. This was in the age before high speed lifts so we spent a lot of time on chairlifts. We would occupy the time singing the “12 Days of Christmas” and making up our own skiing-related versions – 5 face plants, 4 abominable snowmen, etc..Now, I make a long Christmas run a even more fun by making up running-related 12 Days of Christmas (I do not run with any tunes…well…except my own).
My favorite Christmas song is ‘O Holy Night’. I get chills every time I hear it and it makes me aware what Christmas is really about.
Hands down, my favorite holiday song is Feliz Navidad!
Agree that it depends on my mood .. on Christmas Day, my very favorite Christmas carol to sing in church is “Joy to the World”! It’s just the spirit of the day, to me.
Bono’s line in “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” gets me every time too. And, this season, “Where Are You Christmas?” Faith Hill has hit home to me for where I am this holiday season. Grooveshark has been a Godsend this year .. I set up my all time favorites playlist and listen with my kids while we bake or decorate .. can’t help but feel in the Christmas spirit while dancing around the kitchen with my kiddos 🙂
Happy Holidays Everyone!
My most beLOVED song is Bebo Norman’s “Christmas Time is Here!”
Mary, Did You Know. It makes me wonder what Mary thought looking at her newborn son, and it makes me wonder what amazing things my two young kids will do with their lives.
I must admit my Christmas does not begin for me until I hear Welcome Christmas off the Grinch Who Stole Christmas soundtrack! In todays day when Christmas has been so commercialized it warms my heart to hear that song and remind myself that Christmas comes without ribbons, it comes without tags, it comes without packages, boxes or bags! Christmas doesn’t come from a store, Christmas means a little bit more!!!! Merry Christmas everyone!
Silent Night by Josh Groban – incredibly peaceful and soul filling!!l
Being Jewish, we didn’t really listen to many holiday songs…..however, when Adam Sandler came out with his great Chanukah Song…I sing and laugh with it every year!
My favorite song has been the same since I was 8 and in church past bedtime with a candle in my hands……..Silent Night.
Who can pick just one? Anything by Bing, but specifically White Christmas…though Mele Kelekimaka is super fun to sing along to, as well. God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen/We Three Kings by BNL & Sarah McLachlan. O Come O Come Emmanuel (any version). See? You really can’t have just ONE favorite! And now Mele Kelekimaka is stuck in my head…
My favorite Christmas song this year is “How Many Kings?” Its a great reminder to me and has a wonderful tune:)
My favorite song by far is “Christmastime is Here” by the tenor Carl Tanner in his CD “Hear the Angel Voices”. It is very meaningful for me because he sung it at a concert I attended THE DAY THE ADOPTION FOR MY SON WENT THROUGH IN GUATEMALA! To me it meant that Christmastime really was here because I was getting my son after 7 years of infertility. Two weeks after that date, Guatemala closed their doors for adoption and I was so close to not getting my son. My son was born with a cleft lip and palate and was waiting to come to the US to be adopted so he could have surgery.
My favorite song is O Holy Night. I know this is an old one, but I will be singing along just fine, enjoying the music when the tune changes and the line “Fallllll on your kneeeeeesss” makes my soul feel like it is kneeling, too….This song brings such emotion and reminds me of the “why” of Christmas.
My fav song is “Baby It’s Cold Outside” It’s been playing in my nano since the beginning of December and I sing along to it on my runs without a care of who hears me!! 🙂
Jolly Holiday by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Many fond memories tied to this song.
For some reason my Christmas song this year is ~I need a little Christmas~right this very minute. I think its fitting since my aunt just died last week and between usual family Christmas icky stuff and funeral stuff on top of it (and a horrendous amount of Christmas cookies) I have the blues. Everytime I hear this song this year it just hits me. I need a little Christmas!
Anything my 2 boys sing & especially when they mess up the words!
My favorite is when my son dresses up in his little latke outfit and sings “I had a little dreidel”!
Living in AZ, my only choice would be “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”! LOL! Thanks for the chance!
Gotta go Drunk on Christmas by Jimmy Fallon and John Rich. Instant classic and so touching.
http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/video/drunk-on-christmas-with-john-rich-12-16-10/1265633
It’s hard to pick but I have to say “Christmas Time is Here” (Vince Guaraldi Trio)
It has to be “Twelve Days od Christmas” on the first day of Christmas my TRUE LOVE gave to me… I am a Colombian born, and near heard of the song until The 1st Christmas my at the time future husband 2002 (even though neither of us knew it) sang the song to my two little ones (Sebastian and Sarah, 4&3 at the time) anyway, to make the story short, that was an unexpected Christmas, I was recently divorced and alone (yes, with two beautiful kids, but alone) that song and my “friend” singing to my children…. Made it very special.
Right now it is ‘”Christmas Offering” by Casting Crowns. “Baby It’s cold outside” also a favorite.
I love them all too…but one of my favorites is O Holy Night.
I hate to say it, but it’s not the obvious one. 🙂 I can’t tell you how many times people have sung Joy to the World to me over the years. I actually loved it as a child because it was always the last song during Christmas mass and then my siblings and I knew mass was over and we could go home and open presents!
My favorite is Oh Holy Night. It gets me every time.
Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson “Winter Song”
O Holy Night. Every time I hear it I get chills. And sometimes I have to listen to it in the dead heat of summer.
I love all Christmas songs, but right now I love God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen, performed by The BareNaked Laddies and Sara Mclaughlin.
It’s hard for me to pick one favorite. So I’d have to say my favorite is whichever one I hear being sung by Andy Williams. I had two of his Christmas records as a kid and listened to them over and over for weeks before Christmas. It just brings back one of those good childhood memories.
I have always loved Away In A Manger. It not only was my favorite song to play on the piano when I took piano lessons as a little girl but it tells the story of Jesus and His birth. When I hear the song it brings back that childhood memory.
Mary Did You Know — almost every version. I listen in awe.
Oh Holy Night by Josh Grobin is my absolute favorite. But I also have been loving dancing around the living room to Jingle Bells and Frosty w/my 2-yr-old this year! Happy Holidays everyone! 🙂
When my oldest son was really little and he would sing in his preschool Christmas program, I was so touched when I heard him sing “Away in a Manger” that it has become my favorite Christmas song. Listening him sing about baby Jesus as a 3-year-old brought tears to my eyes. He is now 14 and I still love hearing him sing the song.
Father Christmas by the Kinks!
BEST CHRISTMAS SONG EVER!
Well, we just got a piano yesterday and the only Christmas song I remember how to play ) It’s only been over 20 years! ) is “The Little Drummer Boy”. I’ve always liked that song.
It’s so hard to pick just one, but I find myself turning up the David Bowie/Bing Crosby “Little Drummer Boy” when it comes on.
Not sure what the name is but it goes “Christmas is coming the goose is getting fat; please (to) put a penny in the old man’s hat; if you haven’t got a penny, a haypenny will do, if you haven’t got a haypenny then God bless you!” Preferably sung by Miss Piggy.
Hands down it’s “Christmas Cannon” by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra!! I could listen to it on repeat over and over. I also have the Glee sound track going in the Odyssey!
I like 6 white boomers! I have been living down under for the past 3 years and I’m loving a summer Christmas!!!
‘hark the harold angels sing, glory to the new born king….” from the charlie brown christmas….love!!!
Silent night. We sing it by candlelight at church and nothing makes Christmas feel more real to me than that moment of thankfulness.
Jingle Bells is my favorite as I am fully enjoying the various renditions my children have been singing! Oh to be a kid again!
This sounds horrible but there is a song that John Denver sang and was on his Rocky Mountain Christmas album called Please Daddy don’t Get Drunk This Christmas…it’s actually really up beat and I just remember thinking it was the funniest song ever as a kid. A close second is The Hawaiian Christmas Song by Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters.
The First Noel. I was born on Christmas Eve 🙂 My middle name is Noelle…close enough right?
Angels We Have Heard on High by Neil Diamond I listen to it on repeat and NEVER get sick of it.
I love any version of “O Holy Night.”
I also look forward to hearing Chris Cornell’s version of “Ave Maria” every year!
Oh Holy Night – one of my favorite versions is by Aaron Neville. Takes me back to being a 10 year old Girl Guide carolling at a hospital, where we tried every year to sing it, even though only one girl out of the whole group could hit all the high notes.
How to choose. Probably my favorite classic is Gloria in Excelsis Deo. A newer one that gets me every time is “Christmas in Heaven”, by Sarah Schieber – her husband died during their run in the Chicago Marathon in 2007?9? and this song is about asking the loved one what it’s like in heaven. Yea, I love it. She’s used her leap into singing to show one can move on from tragedy. She’s succeeded. Right ON!
I think Jingle Bells for all the lamest reasons. Like it is easy to sing, easy to sing in around, and I never forget the words!! The First Noel always makes me tingle too.
Anything on the Pink Martini Christmas CD…….that will keep me in the Christmas spirit no matter how much I have left to do.
I have a few favorites, for sure! I love O’ Holy Night. And The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole. But one of my very, very favorites? It’s the whole album of Kenny & Dolly’s Christmas. Yes, that’s right. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton 🙂 My mom played it when I was little and I know every single word and it’s definitely my all time favorite!
Christmas Canon is my favorite Christmas song. 🙂
My favorite Christmas sing for the last year or so has been Silent Night. Here’s the backstory. My 5 year old always insists on a song at bedtime. One night I was going through the usual playlist I know and decided to sing SIlent Night even though it was long after Christmas. From that night on she has requested that I sing silent night while I scratch her back as she likes longer songs and thus a longer back scratching session (too smart for her own good). Now that Christmas has rolled around, it is fun to hear her get excited when she hears Silent Night come on the radio, or tv at home. I think hearing it will always make me remember those nightly back rubs, even when she has long outgrown them!
I love “rockin around the Christmas tree” every time I hear it, it makes me smile and want to dance.
Each year is different for me, but this year I like The Nutracker Suite, particularly the Arabian Dance. My 5yo daughter has been dancing to it around the living room just like I used to as a kid!
Hark the Herald Angels Sing is my favorite!!!
Merry Christmas!
Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses.
Oh Come All Ye Faithful is still my favorite. I have very fond memories of singing the song when I was a little girl (6ish) in the church choir. It just resonated with me. I remember my peers getting mad at me with this song because they said I was singing too loud but I just didn’t care:-)
The Beach Boys Christmas cd!!! We would always listen to this growing up and so I love all the Christmas memories that it brings back when I listen to it now.
The best hollyday-song for me is Feliz Navidad from José Feliciano.
Mary Christmas Mary and Mary Did You Know
My favorite Christmas song is an oldie but one that always reminds me of my mom and dad. Charlie Pride’s Christmas in My Hometown. We play it every Christmas morning while opening presents, a tradition I hope to always keep.
I love the “12 Days of Christmas” sung by John Denver and the Muppets–takes me back to childhood 🙂
Wizards in winter… Transiberian orchestra version
I love O Holy night and Silent Night…hmm..maybe I’m a little sleep deprived this week!
I’ll Be Home For Christmas!
I love “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time”. I love when I hear it in the beginning of December and it’s like the kick off to the holiday season. I don’t even celebrate Christmas and it just makes me happy. As would a Garmin 110. 🙂 !!
“War is Over” by John Lennon or “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt. It’s so sweet to hear my 4 year old sing both!
My favorite song is Blue Christmas by Elvis. As a kid, that whole album was played constantly in my house because it was my mom’s favorite. My brothers and I would sing it with the overempasized Elvis stylings. My mom passed away 6 years ago and the first Christmas without her I bought that CD. It’s a happy memory of my mom that helps me when I miss her the most!
“Silent Night” by Simon & Garfunkle or “This is Christmas” by John Lennon & Yoko Ono and, yes, both of them are on my holiday run list along with some Manheim Steamroller!
There are so many songs to chose from but my favorites are the ones we play while decorating the tree each year as a family. I’d have to say Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas takes the cake.
Merry Christmas running friends!
I love any Christmas song, but I guess the one that always gets me in the true spirit of the holiday is “Silent Night” at the Christmas Eve candle light service.
“Blue Christmas” by Elvis and “Come Home for Christmas” by Don Henley. The hubby is always deployed to some war zone during the holidays and even though he’s back this year I still like to sing them at the top of my lungs to embarass my children!
still has to be “grandma got run over by a reindeer”.. the whole family loves to sing this one..
When I hear band Aid I know Christmas is here and it warms my heart. It brings back all the memories of that year and I have watched that vdea so many times.I never get bored of hearing it.The images of the straving children in Ethiopia still gets me and makes me relaise just how lucky we are even wehn we are having a yukky day.
Merry Christmas everyone
Mitch Miller’s “Must Be Santa”! Love the big band swing of it!
TranSiberian Orchestra’s version of ” Carol of the Bells!” ( what other Christmas song can you “conduct” to??!!) , and, in general, “Oh Holy Night” ( the crescendo of the “fall on your knees and hear the angel voices” gets me every time….)
Dominick the Donkey by Lou Monte…growing up a first generation American (parents off the boat from Italy) lots of Italian in our home. Even my kids know all the words:)
Favorite is Silent Night…. part of Christmas Eve church service includes everyone singing & holding candles…. best moment of the holiday.
My favorite is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen – just because of the Bright Eyes version
Silent Night…..for so many reasons. 1. the true meaning of the song 2. when the kids slept through the night 3. now as a grandmother, time to reflect and give thanks for my many blessings
This year my favorite is Jingle Bells because my 3 year old belts out his version with such glee to my 1 year old and she dances to his song. Cutest thing ever!
I’m a little in love with Straight No Chaser right now (12 Days of Christmas is amazing) much to the consternation of my family.
oh and PLEASE PICK ME!!!
I would normally say “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby. My favorite classic movie and song with loveable Bing. But this year, my daughter turned four last week and has learned the joy of “Jingle Bells”, non-stop. Sung in an opera type style, on repeat, again and again and again….. We’ve videod her sitting at Walmart in the shopping cart, Home Depot in the shopping cart, grocery store in the shopping cart, car seat….you get the drift. It’s turned into a classic memory that just warms my heart!
Away in a Manger, the one with the tune credited to Martin Luther
I have two favorite holiday songs for two different matters of the heart. My first is Silent Night. It always brings me peace during one of the most hectic times of the year. It reminds me to stop and savor the holidays instead of running around (doing errands, not actually running) and stressing about what I forgot to do, still need to do, and/or wish I had time to do. It’s a beautiful song that I only hear during this time of year, but always when I need to hear it most.
My other favorite holiday song is Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I want to say it’s because I enjoy watching my daughter’s excitement as she listens to it, but I think it’s more than that. What a cool message for kids (and really all of us) that it delivers–just because you’re different than others and may be teased and bullied, doesn’t mean you can’t shine in your own special way.
Jingle Bells! It’s my new favorite because my two year old is learning to sing it. Hearing his version gives me sincere and endless joy.
My favorite Christmas song is O Holy Night. It always brings tears to my eyes and I think it truly captures the essence of Christmas.
I love We Wish You a Merry Christmas. I love all forms of it, vocal or instrumental, doesn’t matter. My favorite commercial is the Hersey Kisses commercial that features that song.
I have always loved O Holy Night. It sounds so very very right for the Christmas season.
Being a child of the 60’s , Little Drummer Boy hands down !!
I love the song “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by the Barenaked Ladies. If you’ve never heard their version…it is amazing!
Christmas Time’s a Comin’ by Sammy Kershaw… is my favorite 🙂
Let is snow!
It would be great to have a few snowy days.
