Hump Day Giveaway: Elevator Pitch

January 5, 2011
by

The only elevator--a Lego version of Willy Wonka's glass one--that would be a regular part of my (exciting) life. And even then, it'd be put together for about two minute before the pieces would scatter into dog bowls, under couches, in desk drawers...

Lately, I’ve been working on some proposals for future projects. This may come as surprise to some of you readers, but I can be a bit long-winded. I do love my M-dashes and semicolons and other less popular punctuation, along with run-on sentences like this very exact one––look familiar to anyone?

Problem is, proposals have to be succinct. Spot on. Concise. No room for rambling. If you can’t sum up in three sentences why this project should be executed, this story should be written, this very idea needs to happen pronto, well, it is either
a) a bad idea to begin with
or
b) needs to be polished.

In business-school-speak, I believe they call this brief summary the elevator pitch. The right person steps on the ‘vator, and you’ve got 3 sentences to make your idea sing.

For as much as I talk about running, I don’t have my elevator pitch down. I meander from talking about why my head needs running as much as my body does to why getting up early isn’t that bad, once you’re used to it, to how all you really need is good shoes and a sports bra. (Look: another run-on sentence!)

For today’s Hump Day giveaway, let’s pretend you’ve got one elevator pitch to sell running. We all know–or reluctantly admit, anyway–it’s not a bad idea to begin with. Pretend a mom who has never run walks up to and asks, “Why do you run, anyway?” Convince her, in three sentences or less, to start running.

The GT-2160: Just one of many capable, comfortable options in the Asics family. (Did I sell you?)

For her clever words, a random pitchwoman will take home a $100 Asics gift certificate, to be used towards the style of their choice. As soon-mom-to-be Deena Kastor can attest from thousands  of miles in Asics, the shoes perform. (But the athlete wearing them might also have something to do with it. Just saying.)

So, in three sentences or less, why do you run?

When I run, the only person that I can think about/care about/worry about is me. I can’t get another chocolate milk, do the laundry, pick up a mess of legos (!), or load the dishwasher again. I must concentrate on me.

  3. January 5, 2011 4:11 am

Becoming a runner made me a better mother, friend, teacher and wife. There is NOTHING like the feeling of being out there, challenging your preconceived ideas of what you THOUGHT you were capable of, and succeeding.

I run for me time. It clears my head, and readies me for what my come at me after the run. It makes me a stronger mom/wife!

  6. January 5, 2011 4:29 am

Running not only keeps me out of “mom jeans”–it also keeps me connected to my pre-mommy self. Those precious miles are a trip back to the person I was before infant reflux, second grade science projects and methods for removing chocolate stains from Cinderella costumes overtook my life. I come back from my runs refreshed, happier, and grateful to be a mother.

I run because it makes me feel strong and capable while I do it, and unstoppable when I’m done. Running clears my head, focuses my thoughts and helps me get my day on track before it’s even begun. And while I’m running, no one else is asking anything of me and it’s such a relief to just have that little bit of time to myself.

I run because my big sister told me that the run would clear my over-burdened Mommy mind, and it does. I run because the accomplishment I feel when I run is mine, and mine alone. I run because I want to live a long and healthy life, happily running along the way as a much stronger wife and Mom.

I am a better woman, mother, wife and friend to myself when I run. The peace of being alone, the rhythm of running… Wish I was running today instead of working! Thanks for the giveaway, it’d make a great bday present 😉

I run because I learned I could do it when I thought I was a failure. I thought it was beyond my limits but I found out that I had none when I started to run. Running gives me peace, determination and freedom from my everyday life.

  13. January 5, 2011 5:04 am

(These pitches don’t really go together… but here are 3 sentences that come to mind.)

If you are unhappy and worried about the direction any part of your life is going, run.

If you like the Non-Running you, you will know, love and deeply respect the Running You.

I can see by your question that you’re skeptical, but I can assure you that running is not just for the over-the-top, highly-fit, professionally trained crowd. Running will make you feel so good, aka, it’s my version of my sisters “happy” pill. I find that when I run I am in a better mood and have so much energy. If you give it a try for a few times, I’m sure you will Iove it too and become addicted as I have.

As I put one foot in front of the other the troubles of this life are left behind and the promise of a new, brighter day rises to greet me on the road ahead. I am challenged to face my capabilities and my limitations; empowered to be strong and free. I come in touch with who I am as the strength that is within me springs forth to embrace a new day.

I run because there are so many other people that can’t but I bet they wish they could just run one more time or just once in their lives. I run because I don’t want to regret that I didn’t run when I could have. I run because my Dad couldn’t run or breathe and then he died last January 7th from smoking instead of running.

You don’t have to start out a runner you can become a runner. I had never run a mile in my life until 6 years ago, start slow and you can make it happen. Even if you don’t love it stick with it and it will change your life.

  298. January 6, 2011 6:26 am

Well, because it gives me time to think, relax (yes running is relaxing), and just be me in my head.

I run because I need to find an outlet for my mental and physical needs in order to provide my children with a loving caregiver and strong role model. I run because it provides the biggest return on both of those fronts. I also run because of the financial ease and the community associations it provides.

A person is NOT born a runner–it’s like anything else in life: you have to work towards accomplishing it. The key is you must start out slow by walking and mixing in small blocks of jogging until you build up your endurance. Look up a beginniners 5K training schedule, follow it for a couple months, and before you know it, you’ll be jogging (or running) 3.1 miles!

    (my rather bad poem)

I need something to clear my head.
You won’t stop me unless I’m dead.

You will get time for yourself, have more energy to spend with your children and, really, only wearing mom jeans isn’t flattering for anyone…

Running is awesome because it’s the most time-efficient way there is to get an extremely good workout. It gives you a super-strong heart, you can do it anywhere, and all you really need is a pair of shoes. Plus people will ask you how you got such great legs.

And totally not related to the posed question, but I’ve finally tried running skirts and I love it! I know I should say it’s because of the comfort of the skirt, but really it’s because I LOVE leaving the men in the dust when I wear it. It makes me feel like Wonder Woman.

“Running is a microcosm for harnessing, fighting, and conquering life’s challenges. Every time I lace up the shoes and run, I learn a little more about who I am and the remarkable power I’m able to unleash both mentally and physically. If I were to hand you this new pair of Asics and let you run them from fresh to falling apart, your question would be “How come everyone doesn’t run”?”

After I complete a run, I have the energy, motivation, patience, serenity, and stamina it takes to be a kick-ass mom. The endorphines and the private time on the road, remind me of who I am and allow me to be an example of health and inspiration to my children and my colleagues.
