Hump Day Giveaway: Project *Run*way

January 26, 2011
by

Your a fashion don't: might be worth it to pay for a copyeditor before you print thousands. (from gawker.com)

Back in my teenage days, my style was out of this world. My fave outfits? A pair of flowered, tapered jeans from The Limited, with a matching purple sweatshirt that read, “If it doesn’t say Forenza, it’s not Forenza.” So profound. So profound.

As I was fancying myself stepping out of Vogue, I was making fun of my mom’s outfits. (Yes, I realize now it was a crappy thing to do.) At the end of the day, she’d take off her Avia crosstrainers, then pile her jeans, knees still rounded, a white turtleneck, and a primary-color striped sweater on the extra bathroom sink. The next morning, presumably with new undies and bra on, she’d put on the exact same clothes. I couldn’t believe it. People would notice you’re wearing the same clothes! I warned her. Your sweater is so bright, and your jeans are so dirty. Can’t you just find a new outfit?

Momma's got a new pair of (sassy) pants.

Karma, as we know, can be a bitch. Last night, I was innocently making dinner when Grant comes home. He gives me a kiss, looks me up and down and says, “Wow. You haven’t even changed your clothes today.” My outfit, which I put on at 7 a.m. for Pilates, was too-short yoga pants, a tank, and a pitted-out cotton long sleeve. I hadn’t had a chance to change into my sprung-out jeans, two long-sleeve tees, already intertwined from yesterday for efficient dressing today, and fleece jacket, which parked on a chair in my bedroom the night before. Putting on that outfit, of course, would’ve been a huge style upgrade.

A top more capable than you. (We realize that's saying quite a bit.)

What is your go-to piece of clothing (or whole outfit) that gets worn more than it should? Let us know and you could win a BornFit outfit that will immediately become your favorite–and should be worn often. The Sassy Princeton Pant is a bottom that universally flatters all types of bottoms, plus the medium-weight pant has function to spare, with a wide waist, back pocket, and unexpected stylish print on the back bottom leg. On top, the Windom Top, in a beautiful blue wicking, warm fabric, is the perfect hybrid of jacket and top: the mock neck keeps the chill out, until you unzip to let your sweat out. (If you’re preggo, both these styles come in maternity options as well.) Together, the outfit goes from strength training to watching swim lessons to even pinch-hitting at book club. Nice.

So what’s your version of my yoga pants or my mom’s Ernie-esque sweater? (Love you, ma! But glad I haven’t seen the sweater in decades.)

The five random winners of the Gu Performance Energy Sampler–and what they eat on a long run are–

1. Kathy: For a run 10 miles or less I eat a Luna Bar (smores flavor) as I’m walking out the door. On a 10 run I eat a piece of peanut butter toast then a gu at each 8 miles. Then I get coffee and breakfast with a friend after. 🙂

2. Martha: Well as I’ve never ran more than 5 miles before now (am starting to train for a 1/2 marathon) I’ve only had a 90-calorie fiber one bar (PB flavor is SO good), but when I get home I’m starved! Over the next few months as my runs get longer I will have to experiment with other options as I know that will not cut it.

3. Phoebe V-G: If I’m doing more than 10 miles, I bring food. I rarely buy specialty items because most of the time I am, ahem, unwilling to open my purse strings for such things. I will pack some and chocolate chips or (as I did last weekend) make some cookies for mid-run. I always eat a banana before longer runs and carry hydration – usually just water but sometimes water and faux-sports drink.

4. Ali: I am still working my way up to the ‘big girl’ runs! So I can’t say I have had to face this problem yet – but I am getting there so I am always open to learning. But I am not normally a breakfast person – I eat when I get hungry around 10:30. But when I am going to run or workout I make sure I eat something about 30 mintues prior and in that I work out in the mornings it is usually breakfast related with either an egg or a little bit of peanut butter for some protein that will last longer than 10 seconds in my stomach!

5. Caitlin Adams: I have a standard routine: If I am running for more than an hour and twenty minutes, I use GU and some blue sports drink (blue is the best flavor). The GU comes every 45 minutes, and I alternate between espresso love and vanilla bean. If I am racing, I always take a GU 10 minutes before race start. If the race is longer than a 10K, such as a 10 miler, I take one GU around the halfway point. If I am running extra long or racing long, I often carry some Sports Beans for an extra pick-me-up here and there.

Congrats, ladies! E-mail us at runmother at gmail dot com with your address, and we’ll get your performance packs sent to you pronto!

I’m 15 weeks postpartum. When I “dress up” for the day, I wear the same skinny leg jeans that I bought 3 weeks postpartum (for obvious reasons) and varying shades of a turtleneck. Otherwise, it’s my running tights & fleece. I really shouldn’t rock the tights but I’m getting there!

  6. January 26, 2011 4:11 am

I have a pair of jeans that are well worn (aka, holes in places I just noticed might not be appropriate for any “outside” the house crowd) and a black, tissue shirt. Super comfortable. Still feel cute in (well, maybe not since the holes have appeared)!

I got informed by one of the moms at my son’s school that I was becoming one of those “spandex” moms as I dropped my son off for the third time in a week wearing my Lululemon Wunder Under Pants. In my defense, they were clean and I was heading to run with clients, but yeah, I wear them too many times a week.

Since my fave jeans recently worn out at the “pocket,” I have a newer (5yrs old) pair that I wear all weekend/evening long. They are some no-name thing that my mother-in-law picked up at a warehouse store when she couldn’t handle the other pair of pants anymore. My go-to top is a sweatshirt that I bought for my ex- about 17 years ago that is now tattered at the neck and wrists. In my defense, my college alma mater is still printed clearly on the front and has suffered no damage.

Out of the house (cannot wear sweats/yoga pants out the door, unless on way to yoga/run) when I have to throw on jeans it is an old pair of GAP straight leg boyfriend non stretch jeans… LOVE them and will be sad when they wilt away… They are too big, ‘almost’ makes me want to gain back a couple pounds… But not likely.. .they are good jeans to put long underwear under.. : )

I realized one day that I had become the athletic dressed “AKA” (take no time to get ready women) when a jacket was left at work and everyone assumed it was mine because it was a track jacket. I live in my black yoga pants and depending on the weather a light short or long sleeve shirt with my favorite Nike track jacket oh and my stylish gray and hot pink Nike Lunar lights.

My “I just want to be comfy” outfit is a pair of grey tie waist yoga-ish pants that I got at Belk a L-O-N-G time ago – back when I thought those types of pants were what I was “suppose” to workout in (and then I discovered the heavenly feel of spandex on my ass!) I usually pair these w/ a Hanes demi bra thingy (very comfy – nuf said!) and any old T will do. Sometimes I even convince myself that if I pair these w/ a cute top then the whole outfit is therefore cute – but my husband never agrees w/ that!

But I’m telling you as soon as I get home, my blue fleece pullover from Target and black yoga pants are screaming my name! In Chicago winters, the thermostat may be cranked, but for some reason I’ m always a little better off with some additional layers. Besides, I just really love yoga pants because they make me feel “flexible”- which is seriously not the case as of recently:) what can I say? love you gals!!!!!

My robe is definitely my go-to piece of clothing. It’s long and thick and has a hood. I put it on after I dress and shower if I’m cold. It’s like wearing a blanket. Don’t worry, I don’t wear it outside of the house.

Here’s a sad state of affairs: my go-to outfit (and I wear it almost every day since I run a daycare in my home and I need to be ready for anything!) consists of yoga pants my mom bought for my grandmother (she was about 90 at the time). Grandma didn’t like them because she thought they looked tacky. When Grandma passed away at 91, my mom gave them to me and I wear them alllll the time. So, yeah, yoga pants that a 90-year-old rejected.

    I’m awesome.

My flip-flops. I’m a business school professor, but due to my high milage and sometime long days teaching on my feet, I can’t wear high heels like I used to or I start to get aches in my hips. Just one? [grin] If I’m not going outside, then it’s probably either the black fleece sweatpants so big they also would fit my husband, topped with an old tee and my long fleece bathrobe. Outside the house, the at-least-one-size-too big, very baggy, very very old pair of jeans (they’re probably almost driving age now) that really don’t flatter my flat butt but hang low enough on my hips that they’re comfy for my stomach, and great for travel. Every time I try wearing jeans that wouldn’t double as sweatpants, they feel like putting on nylons!

I would have to say my “mom uniform” consists of jeans, and old college swimming t shirt or sweatshirt depending on the temperature, and an old pair of running shoes. In the fall and winter, I am almost always wearing a North Face fleece that has seen one-to-many cold seasons that has been around since before kids and marriage… as a matter of fact, I am wearing it now. I chuckle at myself from time to time wondering why I was so inclined to purchase an expedition oriented brand, but it has lasted through many “adventures.”

This is fine for around the house, the playground, the grocery store and the best thing is when my kids come in and say “Can we go for a bike ride?” I can immediately say yes and join them either on my bike or jogging. The Hanes hoodie btw was bought at the grocery store for $7.00 mid Cub-o-Ree campout with 32 degree weather. Best buy I ever made!

I wish I could say it were my purple spandex running tights from college (purchased in 1990), but, alas, my running friends have shamed me out of wearing them. I still have them though, because you never know when Prince will start a race series, and I want to be prepared.

My go-to ensemble is black addidas fleece lined running tights, black lulu lemon tank, blue icebreaker sweater, and sometimes pink StrollerStrides fleece. I wear it Tuesdays and Thursdays all day because I don’t work those days and I get in a workout somehow sometime, and it’s MWF running/workout clothes. It also makes an appearance on Saturday morning runs, and, sadly, stays on for far too long. It’s a pretty good look, really; it’s just over worn. In the summer, I switch out the fleece tights for the butt huggers.

I pair them on a regular basis with my Oakley flip flops, and my bright green Nike zip up hoodie that I have had for 5 years. I wear them around the house, I will wear them to the store, I will wear them to the gym, and I will wear them to bed on those particular chilly nights. I refuse to get rid of them because they are comfy, they (in my mind) make my butt look good, and well, I like to hid my stomach on those particular bloated feeling days. yeah I sound like everyone else with the yoga pants… but sneakier… red yoga pants from Dude Girl that I got on sale for 11 bucks. A year and a half ago, I decided to rebel against the school dress code at the school where I taught. I shocked my husband by leaving my J Crew days behind (and the credit card bill thank you very much) and went into my “yoga pants under a dress or skirt” phase. Okay, I know I couldn’t get away with this in very many workplaces. I’m lucky that my school, though an elite college preparatory school, encouraged people to be individuals- hence the teacher wearing shorts during the winter, walking next to the teacher dressed to the nines. Teacher in shorts never got a talking to, so my red Dude Girl yoga pants under some type of Patagonia or Athleta longsleeve dress became a standard. The red yoga pants could go under my ski pants for coaching after school, and I could wear them to bed and then into yoga before school in the morning. Red yoga pants got some friends- another red pair, and then a brown pair I got on sale. Total overuse but I don’t know what I would do without them now.

Except its hot here and I rarely get to wear it. But that’s allowing me to stretch out its life even longer, so it goes from a daily wear when its “cold” to a sleeping the cupboard for 9 months until it gets “cold” again.

So my go to shorts (daily?!) are my running shorts that I bought to start running and hated how the pockets drooped while the legs rode – they didn’t last long at all. A red fleece hoodie from the Gap that my husband bought me about 10 years ago. Paint stains, cat hair, broken zipper, trust me, it’s butt ugly!…yet I wear it all the time (when I’m at home) over top of my ‘good shirts’ so I can whip it off if someone comes to the door! At night, I change into my p.j.’s, but still incorporate the red hoodie. I live in it. Sadly, I am wearing it now….

My go-to outfit is whatever t-shirt I have on hand, usually my husbands as I am still working on loseing the 35 lbs I gained with both babies. Then my stretchy pants that I bought three years ago to wear on the last hike I led that got ripped and that I refuse to throw out because “I spent good money” on them. By the end of the day I usually have food stuck on my shirt from feeding my three year old and my one year old, cooking, and making snacks. Oh, I might get a bite too but that usually ends up on my shirt because I run to rescue sister from brother or the other way around.
Oh, I might get milk on the shirt from leaking as the one year old might not need to nurse for a few hours or might decide to nurse. Who knows? By the end of the day I look like a MOM who has two kids and a farm to run. Did I mention that? Yeah, there might be some pig slop on those pants (but I will take them off if anything else gets on them). I could use some nice clothes, maybe I would look better. Feel better. Be better. 🙂 Thanks for the chance!!!

My work requires professional attire, but when the work day is done I don’t even break stride when I walk in the door and head to my room to change into black yoga pants and a soft fleece top. I had to LOL when I read this. I will sometimes look down at my outfit (typically at preschool drop-off) and say to myself- what was I thinking??? Now that it is winter I care even less because anything I wear is covered up by my Northface full length coat!

My go-to outfit is an old pair of workout pants in black, they are so old I often worry about the threadbare state-will someone see something they would rather not??, a tee-shirt and grey or black fleece (I like to think that since the fleece has seams that give an hourglass illusion that I am actually fashionable!). Sick, really sick. My teenage self would be so disappointed.

I have a sweatshirt that I stole from my father that I absolutely love. He bought it at a fundraiser for people that were going to climb Mt. Everest the year we moved to Oregon (which was the year after I was born). So it’s from 1984 (as it says on the sweatshirt). And it makes people think that someone in my family climbed Mt. Everest (my dad has climbed many a mountain, all of them in Oregon and Washington, but not Everest!). It’s ridiculously old, ridiculously thin, and getting more and more holes in it every day. But I always feel loved in it and so I wear it all the time.

Mine would have to be a super soft, “holey” pair of Levi straight leg jeans that I got soon after my daughter (who is almost 12!) was born. I wore these jeans everywhere and with everything for years. Then the knees gave out but I rationalized that I could still wear them to “knock around in” and that the holes in the knees just made them look casual. Then the belt loops pulled loose, but I decided that since I had underwear on underneath that the small holes left by the loops it wasn’t really that bad. I wore them often on the weekends to ride horses and since I really like riding bareback there was a permanent brown circle on my behind from sitting on the horse. I thought since I was mostly wearing them to ride that it was really just fine. A couple of weeks ago I was getting into my jeep, and as I raised my leg up to get in, the entire bottom of one side of the pants ripped apart exposing half of my bottom to the really cold December air! I either had waaay too many Christmas cookies, I haven’t been running enough, or maybe it’s time for the jeans to be retired 🙂

Mmmm cozy warm!

My sports bra, from middle school, not highschool yes, middle school it is about 20 years old, yikes and am not sure what it is still holding up when I run although I really don’t have much to hold up, but it has been with me and so close to me for so many years I can’t bear to give it up!

Oh, yes, love my yoga pants. I also have a pair of Big Star jeans I found at my favorite second-hand boutique that I wear whenever I’m not wearing the yoga pants. Lots of dressing up going on over here. But these days, training 6x week right after school drop-off in the morning, I fear my running tights are worn so much that they’re sure to become one with my skin at any moment. It’s what my kids and husband see me in every morning, and as much as I love my runs, I’m getting pretty sick of these pants. Bring on spring — and capris and my running skirts!!

During college I had a deep love for black leggings, long tanks, and crewneck sweatshirts. I could get away with pairing it with some boots during the day and then hours later replace them with some tennis shoes for a run. This took little to no effort and made my life that much easier and convient. However less than a year later with a 8 to 5 job I still find myself going to this “go-to outfit” right after work and every weekend. I can’t lie, I really love this outfit, the combinations I can make with it, and the convience factor it offers, maybe one day I will grow up? 😉

I tried the whole stylish, cutesy Mommy look: polished jeans, ballet flats, cute top. And I found it to be so overrated an impractical. Getting dressed became overwhelming in the mornings- what the heck kind of socks does one wear with ballet flats? Sand crept into them when at the park. Chasing my two boys was tough. Sweating in a cutesy top not so cute. So, I stick with what works. What’s comfy. Yoga pants, which can TOTALLY be dressed up or down. Thankyouverymuch. Sneakers. Comfy t-shirt. Maybe when my boys (2 and 4) are in school I’ll give the cutesy look another go….but until then athletic gear it is.

Definitely, it has to be my Nike Yoga/Running pants that I have torn into pieces in order to become a completely functional running pant. First, I cutt off the bottoms because I am 5’2″ and no matter how small the pants are, they are always long. Then, I made 2 holes on the inside part of the waist, and inserted an elastic band that was actually tight in my waist so that the pants would not run down.
I use this pants in the spring, fall and winter. In the winter I use them as my second layer over my compression tights, AND to top that, I wear them in the house and to run errands. They are getting to be retired but they lasted a third renovation. I sewed pieces of reflecting ribbon on the sides, so I could also use them to run in the dark afternoons of New York’s winter!!!

Both are just too comfy! And I typically pair them with a tank top or old tshirt. Yep…I’m a walking fashion no-no.

This is embarassing, but I am wearing it RIGHT NOW. Fleece sleep pants from Target and a sweatshirt from (I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP) 1994. It’s held up remarkably well, but, well, EW. I come home from work and I just can’t wear dress clothes one single second more. My poor husband…I NEED some lounging clothes that are not disgusting!

  293. January 26, 2011 5:48 pm

In my day to day life my Go-To is less one outfit than a group of similar pieces: Capri chinos, three quarter sleeve knit v- neck, and yoga split-toe flip-flops. My daughter once referred to my style as my “uniform.” (I think I wore jeans and a button down that day!). When working out, my go to is a basic black pair if yoga pants, my dark pink ON compression top with the thumb holes, and my lucky (and OLD) Adidas ball cap.

I just started running 1 year ago. I was a size 16 and (yay!) am down to about a 10. And yet, I STILL grab my size L purple striped sweater and my size 14 jeans. I have other clothes that fit and feel better, but I wear this outfit EVERY week. And the sweater is starting to pull. I’m devastated. I obviously need a new go-to to replace my loved, and too big on me sweater. 🙂

My fuzzy grey Converse cardigan (which replaced my Irish cardigan that was HUGE, thanks to all of the running I’ve been doing), along with my black stretch Champion work out capris. They are good for working out, cleaning, hanging with my kid, and, well, that’s about it.

I will admit that I recently burned an old black skirt that I had worn since 1996. It was ankle length and had holes all over it, safety pins held the waistband in place. It went through college, two marriages (one divorce), the birth of my daughter, and many more milestones. It was hard to give up, but it was time. I shed a tear that day.

  296. January 26, 2011 5:51 pm

I wear flared jeans (I will never buy a pair of tapered jeans ever–I was a teenager in the mid-80s), mini sundress (yes, over the jeans), and a cardigan (in this season). It is presentable, and interesting, but becoming less so as it becomes my uniform.

  297. January 26, 2011 5:51 pm

Almost every night after work I slip into shrunken cotton yoga pants (used to black but have seriously faded to grey) and a grey and black striped cotton sweater. My favorite go-to outfit (at least it has been this winter) is a pair of boot-cut Lucky Brand Jeans, a comfy gray cable knit sweater, a pair of black western booties, and this fabulous black, crushed velvet hat that has these great little deep red flowers on it! And, yes, I’ve worn it 2 days in a row – when I saw different people – don’t tell anyone!

My go to outfit, day to day? Black or grey lululemon yoga pants, along with a lulu tank, and then a lulu scuba hoodie. While I have the tanks and hoodies in many, many color choices — I’m sure my family is sooooo tired of this outfit in its various combos. 🙂 I usually get up early and work, get the kids off to school, go for my run, and then change into this combo (yes with clean undies, clean sports bra and clean socks). I then work more, and get the kiddos back from school in the afternoon. My shower? That comes in the late afternoon or early evening — hopefully (but not always) in time to put on a little lipstick and “look cute” B4 hubby gets home for dinner. 🙂 But I love my lululemon clothes – they are cute as well as comfy. If you were to ask my husband, I’m sure he’d tell you that while he likes the yoga pants on me, he would prefer me in my skinny jeans, some knee high boots, and a fitted sweater!

  304. January 26, 2011 5:54 pm

My favorite go to clothing item is definitely this old yellow cable knit sweater that used to belong to my mom. I loved to curl up in it when I was a little girl. When I got married & moved away, my mom mailed it to me to have. My mom passes away last year but this 30 year old sweater remains. It’s faded, has holes and holds NO shape what so ever…it really should be thrown away, but it holds every essence of my mom & my childhood that I will have it until it literally falls apart…and then I will fold its remains up and put it away. 🙂

It depends on if you’re talking about running wear or regular clothing. I have one FAVORITE pair of jeans, I swear they are ready to walk away on their own! Once you’ve found the perfect pair, it’s hard to wear something else (I’m sure you all know what I mean!). For running gear, it depends on the season, but I find that I have certain season-specific favorites. My current one is my under armour cold gear mock turtleneck – I wear it on almost every single outdoor run in the winter!

In big letters it sports my name and “GO Momma, GO!” I wore it for my 26.2 and now put it on every time I have a challenging race or long run. Love how strong I feel when I have it on!

Plus a bandanna to hide my unwashed hair. That’s my fashion statement: pink, purple, white, or, my favorite when it’s clean, black with white skulls. My philosophy is that if you are only wearing it for part of a day (usually the case since I split my time between running clothes and pjs as well), you can wear the same thing several days – especially if you don’t do consecutive days. 🙂

Love my black yoga pants…so much so that they have small holes down the inseam. They are best paired with my light blue cami which can only be worn under a tshirt because it has such perma pit stains on it. Needless to say I was horrified the day I came home and my Mom, to be helpful , had done my laundry and sitting on the top of the pile was my nasty cami. What can I say it’s hard to let go of the comfort outfit!

I have an over-dyed hooded sweatshirt from the Gap, circa late 1990s, in faded bright pink that I throw on many evenings and weekend mornings. Often it gets worn well into the weekend. Last year, the brass zipper finally went and I paid a tailor to replace it with a new matching zipper so I could still wear the sweatshirt! She thought it was a little crazy given the condition of the sweatshirt- there are holes in the seams where the sleeves meet the cuffs and all around the cuff on the bottom. And I’m pretty sure my husband is plotting the death of my pink sweatshirt.

My go to outfit are my brooks sweatpants and my white nursing tank, with a black hoodie thrown over. The sweatpants got me through winter marathon training a couple years ago, pregnancy and post-partum. they are now too big on me (hurrah), but I haven’t had time to go out and replace them. The nursing tank speaks for itself, though it may be grey or black on occasion. And the black hoodie – keep the shoulders warm. My husband deserves better, I know. Perhaps i should find a purple nursing tank.

I bought an open-front cardigan (black, of course) when I was pregnant more than a year ago. My daughter is 11 months old now and the rest of the maternity clothes are long gone, but I can’t seem to let go of that cardigan. I can dress it up or down, the front can be draped to cover baby drool or mushed-up goldfish crackers, and it’s, ahem, generously sized these days. It’s probably time to let go of the last of my maternity wardrobe, but it’s so darn comfortable…

I figure that the really important thing to change is the top, and most people won’t notice the pants, right?

If I’m not going anywhere during the day I wear pajama pants and a Carolina sweatshirt. When I actually leave the house I am wearing the only pair of pants that fit and a shirt I got for Christmas. My husband calls these my uniforms. I hate washing them because that means I can’t have them on! 😉

Well in the winter it is jeans, a tank top and a long sleeve shirt over, but in the summer, which is my favorite time of year,it is a tank top, and a skirt with flip flops. I had two skirts last year that i had to retire because they were see thru by the end from washing them so much.

My “now” go to outfit is a brand new pair of size 2 jeans I got – all because of my love of running!

A black pair of stretch pants, I reach for these several times a week.
