Hump Day Giveaway: Compress Yourself

April 6, 2011
by

Not coming to a store near you soon: Baby Mop Clothing. But I do like the idea.

I love new gear as much as, well, all of you, but I rarely gush about it. Warning: I’m gonna gush now. I’m not even going to do an introduction about this week’s giveaway because I just want to gush.

I got a pair of these 110% capris–or knickers, as they’re called–to test-drive a few weeks ago. Before I even put them on, I loved the idea: compression fabric–really tightly woven material that encourages healing blood flow to your muscles–that has strategically placed, large pockets over the knees, back, quadriceps, hamstrings, and lower back.

Which leads to you ask: what are those pockets for?
To that I would answer: to hold the slim sheets of ice packets that come with the capris.

So you go for a run in these capris, you come home, you slip in the ice packets over any areas that might need it, and–this is the genius part–you can go on about your multitasking life, making school lunches, helping with homework, feeding a bottle, folding the laundry. In order to properly take care of your muscles and joints, you don’t have to park yourself on the couch for 20 helpless minutes and bark orders to your kids. (“Feed me grapes! Now!”)

For moms, these cargo running capris rank up there with the sippy cup, the minivan,  macaroni and cheese, and Pull-Ups: They simply make life easier.

Capris built for the Inspector Gadgets--or mother runners--of the world.

I’ve worn them three times so far, and love how supportive they felt during my runs. Like Spanx, they kept jiggling and extra movement to a minimum. Once, I was really unmotivated to get up and run (big surprise right?), and then I thought, “Oh, but my cargo capris are clean!” I immediately got up. After each run I stuffed all the pockets with ice and did the normal a.m. routine. I noticed my knees, usually achy in the afternoon after a morning run, weren’t hurting and the rest of my lower body wasn’t quite so angry, either.

The only complaint I have about them, other than I don’t have a pair for every run, are they’re (necessarily) thick—they have two layers of compression—so I probably won’t be donning them in the summer. Then again, maybe I’ll just run with the ice packs in them…

I’ll stop my infomercial now so you can have a chance to win  a a pair of your own. All you have to do is answer this question: What do you think is the best invention for either mothers or mother runners?

P.S. The winner of the Dansko clogs is Heidi Shepard, who takes care of her feet this way:

Being the Northeastern ‘yankee’ (as in bargain huntress, not baseball fan, I am a Red Sox fan!) that I am, I’ve tried several, inexpensive knock-offs that have worn down, out and even hurt my feet. So Dansko’s are my clog of choice. And a far too infrequent pedicure on the end of my size 10 toes is a oh so worth-it expense and joy!

Heidi: your toes (and wallet) will surely appreciate the new clogs. E-mail us at runmother at gmail dot com and we’ll get you and your size 10’s set up!

While I don’t have one I think a jogging stroller could be the best invention for a mother runner. It allows you to get your run/sanity saver in and still be with your kids. Our terrain around here isn’t really good for a jogging stroller but it would be awesome if you lived in an area where it would be safe.

Those capri’s look awesome! I never get to ice myself until hours after I run so this would help with that problem. My right knee hurt while I read this because it wants to wear them! Today might be an ice day!

Best invention for both runners and mothers is coffee. I know it is not an uber-cool running response, but it can motivate me to get out and run and also keep super crabby tired mommy at bay.

I would have to say my Belle baby carrier! It is made by people that make backpacks. It is super comfy! It has been a life saver to me and hasn’t hurt my back.

I would have to say my athleta wind/rain jacket. I wear it all the time during three seasons. Comes off easy and I tie it around my waist. It has seen me through many rains and high winds. I wear it over many layers in wintertimes cold weather!!

I totally agree. I have a B.O.B. Revolution for my son and now that we are expecting our daughter in the next month we have already purchased a duallie. I would hardly ever get a chance to get out and run if I didn’t have the stroller and once you go B.O.B. you never go back! Plus I like the fact that while my kids are young I can share something that I enjoy doing with them and my husband.

The best invention for mothers… Hmmm. Good question. The minivan with DVD? Door locks on bedrooms? For mother runners I think the best invention is the iPhone. I can be reaches if my kids need me, listen to music, GPS my run and tweet about it later. All with one thing.

The jogging stroller is the best invention for mother runners. Without it I surely would not have found a way to get out there and run while my boys were little. It’s logged miles and miles and even though it is a very basic model, has lasted 9 years (with a few minor repairs) and it sure looks like it, too. Now that my youngest is almost 4, I’m a bit sad that the jogging stroller is getting close to retirement.

There are so many great inventions but the one that got the most use for me was the jogging stroller. Mine is long gone now but, whenever I see one with a happy laughing child, it brings back some wonderful memories of past runs and of my little boy who isn’t so little anymore.

  14. April 6, 2011 5:11 am

    It’s a tossup.

God made my first choice, so how do you compete…It would have to be my BRPs -Best Running Partners – my girl, Kimberley and my pup Roo (the former is my “extra mile” and the latter is my “get out of bed”) and I love em both.

The other – a distant second but still valuable – is that little zip pocket over the booty of my running pants. It’s amazing (and sometimes a little scary) all that pocket holds.

  15. April 6, 2011 5:11 am

For me, its a running friend with boys the same age! Ours are at the age they can stay by themselves for awhile! We run, they hang out!

For mother runners – hands down the jogger, with the spouse/partner coming in close second 😉

For mothers – I forget what it’s called but it’s that bouncey, vibrating “chair” you can slip your baby into. I swear on my life i would not have surviveed those first years with my kids had it not been for that invention.

Best invention for mother runners – Netflix on the ipad. Now running on the treadmill isn’t so boring!

Best invention for mothers – the backpack that you can carry the baby in. I got so much more done with a happy baby on my back than an unhappy baby in the pack-n-play.

  18. April 6, 2011 5:15 am

The Treadmill, for sure. I have a second-hand one in the basement. It’s for emergency use only, but it’s seen many an emergency. With a sick kid at home or 12 inches of snow, I can still get my run in.

I think the best invention for mothers especially when they are Mother Runners is the iPhone. My son can watch a movie or play a game in his stroller while we are out shopping or running. At the same time I can use my running program to map my distance and times (even, mostly slow ones). I can take a photo or make a video of all the adorable or not so adorable things he does. We have a phone in case of an emergency, no matter how far we wander and if I get to use it myself I can choose from 100s of songs to suit my mood! Not a gadget person but I love my iPhone!!!!!!

  20. April 6, 2011 5:17 am

Ummm, the JOGGING STROLLER!! Without it, I would go insane in the spring and fall. Part of my love of running is the joy of being outside. And with hubby’s crazy work schedule, I can’t always pick and choose when I get to run. With the jogger, I can take the girls on a run anytime and we all get to enjoy the beautiful weather.

For mother runners: jog strollers and toaster waffles, hands-down! For runners: Garmin, no question!

  33. April 6, 2011 5:45 am

I’m not a mother or a mother runner, so I’ll have to draw on the expertise of my friends – a treadmill seems to be what allows my mother runner friends to get it done once the kiddos arrive (whether at home or at a gym), second is a jogging stroller.

Saw the capris at an expo recently and thought – ooh, need those! I think they also have (longer) shorts, maybe those would do for warm weather.

Dimity – maybe Sarah can get a pair too and she can compare them to the Saucony compression suit she wrote about a while ago (and for the “dressed alike” theme she seems to be starting)

Definitely the jogging stroller. Not only is it great for getting out to walk, jog or run-they handle like a dream. The best gift I got when I had my daughter was my BoB Revolution, with it I don’t think I would have been so successfull with my weight loss goals 🙂

The best invention for any mom (runner or non-runner) is the playgroup! I joined a Motherlore post-partum group at a local hospital when my oldest was 3 mos. old. We morphed in to a playgroup that met officially once a week, but some of us got together more often. I can’t tell you how much those other moms saved my sanity with their advice and empathy. I really looked forward to Wednesdays. The kids are all turning 11 this year, and some of us are still in touch and great friends. I always said the class that started it all was the best $60 I ever spent!

I have to go with my BOB…even without other fancy stuff, if I can just get myself in shorts, shoes and a sports bra, if I have my BOB, I can bring my kid, which means I can RUN!!

  46. April 6, 2011 6:15 am

Best invention for moms: the bouncy seat.

Those capris would be great for someone like me who has bursitis and DOESN’T have the time to sit down for more than 3.2 seconds after a run to ice my hips. Genius!

The best invention for me AND the little monkey that calls me mom is definitely the COOP group at the gym. I wrote about it on my blog. http://livingrunnersworld.wordpress.com/2011/01/21/cooperative-rewards/

Best invention for mothers is the Ergo baby carrier. All five of my babies loved being carried in it. For a time, the only way I would be able to vacuum is if the baby was in the carrier.

I find this site keeps me connected to like minded moms, especially during the long winter months when I do most of my running alone! Sara and Dimity have really started a revolution of empowering running moms across the globe and I love it!

  58. April 6, 2011 6:36 am

definitely the treadmill. i didn’t start running until my daughter was too old for a jogging stroller (though i’m sure even now at the age of 10 she’d happily go along for a run in one! lol) but without my tread, i’d never get any training done.

i absolutely need a pair of those pants. i’ve been dealing with chronic hip/si joint pain for almost a year now and admit i’m bad about sitting down long enough to ice after a run. i wonder if they make a pair in business wear since i’ve been known to walk around my office with an ice pack stuck down the back of my pants! yes, my coworkers think i am insane!

Overall as a mother, the best invention I have had is my baby carrier (in my case, a Beco Butterfly). My 3 year old has special needs and developmental delays, so when he was unable to walk (he just learned a few months ago), I needed something to help me carry him and get things done. He is a stubborn boy who didn’t like riding in his stroller or shopping carts! With the Beco I could put him on my front for snuggle time, or on my back and do errands, clean, cook, or whatever hands free. Plus with him right up by my face, it is easy to talk to him and entertain him. I only wish I had one with my 6 year old!

  64. April 6, 2011 6:53 am

Since my kids are all either BIGGER than me, and/or have children of their own, I can’t say my favorite invention is a stroller or minivan. For me, it would be my iPod. I wouldn’t be a runner today without it. I really like my Garmin, but I COULD run without it if I had to. So no question, the iPod wins. But then again, I wouldn’t run without my shoes either ….. or my clothes(Yikes!) …. especially my sports bra ….. wow, tough decision!

  66. April 6, 2011 6:55 am

What came first? The chicken or . . . the sports bra? Without the sports bra there would be no Title 9, and definitely no exercise for me after breastfeeding. I can hardly walk down the stairs without some kind of support, so the thought of running without the super strength boulder holder is out of the question. The fact that I have to drop $50 to get a decent quality running bra has always bummed me out (especially after the up-down swings in size that motherhood brings!) but I simply can’t, no can’t go without it. The best invention for mother runners is the treadmill. I can run in the morning before the kids get up, I can run while supervising them watching a movie, I can run when there is 2 feet of snow and ice outside, I can run when it is 10 pm, the kids are in bed, and I finally have a minute for my self. If you have a treadmill, there are no longer any excuses not to run!

The BOB Sport Utility jogging stroller combined with a Bundle Me – with the chill of early spring weather this combination allows this Mother Runner to run 6+ miles all while my 4 month old daughter sleeps snug and sound along the way!

I love my hotsling baby carrier. It reduces the amount of time that I had to the one armed wonder..at last during those first 6 months! And I love the video baby monitor!! For the mother runner, i’d have to say my garmin and bob revolution are tied. Right now that I’m preggers, the garmin is great for interval training (so my walk breaks aren’t too long and so I don’t push my running too hard, what with the heart rate monitor and alarms that I can set to stay within good cardio range. And my jogging stroller: these days i cant go run without it either, as my time is more limited than the first time I was pregnant. My 2 yr old daughter likes to come jogging with mommy, and why not?!? It has cup holders and places for snacks and everything I need! Omg. And since our summers are 3/4 of the year….dri fit moisture wicking tech material makes me not so jealous of the folk who run without shirts. In fact, put your shirt back on, homie!!!! I’m running with my daughter here! 😀

For runners: The Iphone. I just got one and have the Nike+ app, and I really don’t know how I lived without it.

For mother-runners: Since I don’t have a jogging stroller, I’m going to go with my foam roller. I can stretch out on my foam roller after my run, while convincing my kids it’s a toy to play with. It’s a win for everyone.

  84. April 6, 2011 7:46 am

For me… the best invention is DEFINITELY the Velcro straps you can attach to the jogging stroller to keep sippy cups, toys and anything else attached to the stroller, so your kid-O doesn’t throw it over board, causing you to stop your run! Especially when you’re trying to accomplish a certain pace. 🙂

I’ve gotta go with many of the other moms here and say a jogging stroller as well. Like getting a car when you turn 16, a baby jogger is pure freedom on wheels after 9 (10!) months of gestation and healing. Sure, you can run when you’re pregnant, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll feel a bit weighed down- I know I did. It’s also better at navigating any terrain tougher than the inside of the grocery store than a regular stroller and has a bigger basket and more pockets. At least mine does. My jogging stroller also has a music player that I plug into my iPod so the little person and I can rock out to her Yo Gabba Gabba CD’s while “we” run. This keeps her very content (read: longer runs for Mommy).

For Mothers–what we call the “Baby Straight Jacket” but what is more widely known as a Miracle Blanket. It’s a swaddle wrap that is pretty much completely bust proof from that little arm that always gets out at around 3am.

For Mother Runners–Easily, the jogging stroller. My daughter is almost 3 now and I’ve used the heck outta that thing. Never bought the big stroller that matched my carseat because that was big and comfy enough for her to use even when we weren’t running. But, she knows now that when it rolls out of the spare bedroom, she needs to put on her “Running shoes” because it’s time to go out for a jog!

Set-up and break-down are super fast, so I can dissasemble and resassemble it in a heartbeat, before my carseat passenger gets upset. It’s lightweight and of course versitile. My 2 year old will take a 2 hour nap in it, while I get in some much needed miles. I would miss out on a lot of running if not for this nifty item. Love the Chariot.

If you read Jess’s blog at 21 Days you might have seen my comment on her post about a mom running with an umbrella stroller. I was that mom 20 years ago. I was, frankly, young and poor. One of the reason I was running so much was I really couldn’t offer much in the way of recreation and for me running was the best recreation I could find. I wish I had tracked my miles on that little stroller because Army Son and I went every where. He rarely complained and he was in it for over 5 years. So when I say that a jogging stroller is one of the best inventions for a running mom, I speak from a place of experience. Army Son would probably agree.

Since so many have already mentioned the jogging stroller, I want to mention a feature that my jogging stroller had, a tray. So while I was running when my kids were smaller I would put up the tray and they would play with their toys. They would also eat the cereal and dried fruit concoction that I made for them which they called “trailer mix” (named when they were riding in the bike trailer.) It definitely kept them from crying and whining which got me about 30-60 minutes of “me” time!

Best invention for mother runners: hands down, the jogging stroller. Once the hubby went back to work after my baby was born, and he was still too young for the gym’s childcare, the stroller was a saving grace that at least allowed me to get outside and move, even if I wasn’t allowed to run yet. And as for naps? Hello! They’re the perfect nap-inducing tool.

Best invention for mothers, in general – The Moby wrap. I LOVED this thing. It was perfect for soothing a fussy baby, while not always being confined to the rocking chair or wearing out the arms.

I’d have to say the Mesh Fresh Food Baby Feeder is a great invention. You are supposed to use it to give your kids fresh veggies or fruits without worrying about the choking hazard (which is a great concept but SUPER MESSY). I personally use it for teething. I can put a couple of pieces of ice in it and my son can suck and gnaw on the ice cubes, it stops his teething pain (and the screaming and crying that goes along with it – both mine and his.) I even use it when he’s just throwing a fit or on a hot day, it calms him down and gives me back my sanity for a few minutes! I only wish I had discovered it before my 3rd child.

  136. April 6, 2011 9:33 am

It’s a toss-up between the jogging stroller (without which my oldest may never have napped, and that’s mostly true of my youngest as well), the treadmill (necessary for days when the weather is not fit for a jogging stroller), children’s bikes (for children who no longer want to ride in a stroller but who can’t stay home alone yet…granted, my oldest doesn’t pedal fast enough for me to do any more than a slog currently, but that will change!) and babysitters or gym daycare so mom can run in peace.

As a mother runner, I remember those days jogging with engorged breasts while breast feeding and that bra keeps the girls 🙂 well encapsulated, and that bra is virtually bounce proof. I am no longer breast feeding as my boys are older but that is by far, hands down, my favorite jog bra! Best invention for this momma runner! 🙂

Best invention is the BOB Stroller, but my number one reason is not that it is a good jogging stroller, but that when walking it can easily be pushed one-handed — allowing busy, tired mom to either sip a coffee or catch up on a cell phone call to mom and dad while getting fresh air for mom and baby!

Second choice is Netflix streaming over Blue-ray player to TV…..countless episodes of Dora and Dinosaur Train available for my 3-year-old – we try not to use it too often, but “Special Thursday” TV evening is a welcome break for all….

The best “invention” for mothers and mother runners is the ability to let go of the guilt that consumes us when we are taking time for ourselves to run. I discovered this “invention” only recently, and unfortunately spent many years without it, thus sacrificing my “me” time, my running time, and my sanity to spend the only “free” time I had with my kids. Not any more–the invention of guiltless running has been the greatest, most liberating thing ever. That and lots of wine 🙂

Oh gee, I would soooooo love to win these. As a mother of 3 kids 5 and under I could sooo use these babies. Now I have to think of an answer that will make me stand out from the 3,000 or so people that will be commenting on here. good grief. Of course I want to say the jogger stroller! Hello Holy Invention of all Motherhood gifts ever made for the running mama! Of course. Clearly, this invention is the GOLD nugget of all nuggets. I mean, you don’t even need clothes or fancy gear to run if you have your ticket of freedom…You can run naked if you wanted to if you have your jogger stroller. Oh, the freedom I’ve had from my jogger stroller! Strap em in, store some snacks and drinks, some books…maybe even a movie for those extra long runs. And go! You don’t have to wait for you husband to get home from work, you don’t need to wait for your kids to finish their nap (they can nap in the stroller) and you don’t need to take life at a snail’s pace (or two year old’s pace). If you have the right stroller, you can even tackle some grocery shopping on your run.

Oh, and for those mamas that have nursed three kids and are left with nothing but lame saggy nipples, a must have for racing and running is The Handful Bra! This might actually beat the jogging stroller for originality. Ha! All you tiny boobie ladies, check it: http://www.handful.com/ I will never go back to my normal unflattering sports bra ever ever again!

The best invention for mothers, mother runners and people who have to deal with said mother runners has to be ibuprofen. For mother runners the jogging stroller and treadmill — but for mothers everywhere — hands down it is “Pay at the Pump” for gas. I love anything drive-up — drive-up Starbucks and dry cleaners come in tied for second. Lugging 4 kids inside for any errand is a hassle, drive-up keeps me sane!!

  216. April 6, 2011 2:48 pm

For running mums (at least for this one): the jogging stroller. That said, though, I’m sick to death of pushing +60lbs of metal, fabric and grouchy 3-1/2 year old around… I can’t wait until summer and I can finally run on my own again in the evenings!

For mums (of preschoolers in particular): kid-sized backpacks WITH a leash! I know it’s not PC to call it a leash, but if you have a runner like I do it’s perfect. My son thinks he gets his own cool bag to carry snacks and toys and I can haul him back if he starts to run away. Win-win! 🙂 Only problem now is that he’s territorial about the whole thing so he asks to hold the leash himself…

I’m going with the water belt. Mine’s an Amphipod and has space for water bottles, cell phone, car door clicker, gels, and baby washcloth (just cuz you never know when you’ll need it). I even stitched some velcro on it and superglued the other piece to a can of pepper spray so it’s always handy. I look/feel like a world’s cheesiest super hero with a utility belt, but it’s mostly to avoid embarrassment. Since having my daughter, I have learned it’s best not to pre-hydrate. I must simply sip as needed. So if I’m going to run long, or run at all in the summer heat, I must have my belt to “hold my water.”

  218. April 6, 2011 3:00 pm

Neat idea on the capris, though I think without your ringing endorsement I’d be a little skeptical of all the pockets and wonder if I’d use them. But I do like the idea of compression and the big, bold 110% on the back there. But who knows this could be my new favorite invention. For now, though it’s my headphones that go with my shuffle that let me change songs and adjust the volume of my tunes. Not too exciting, I know, but I love it!

While I love the freedom the B.O.B. gives me, I love the restraint the moving comfort Fiona gives even more 🙂 Better yet, when I finally get around to making and having number three, the easy-release velcro strap will make it easy to nurse without struggle (because just what you want to do when you’re done with a sweaty run is nurse, but….)

I love running with my kids in the joggin stroller… on shorter runs. For those long runs when pushing 60lbs in front just doesnt sounds like fun I LOVE that my gym has daycare. I don’t know if that is considered an invention but it is one of the biggest enablers when it come to my running. My husband and I have opposite schedules so I prefer not to do my “long” run on the only day we have off together. If any of you ladies run without daycare please tell me how you do it. Like these tights did for you, a clean nursing sports bra gets me out of my funk and ready to run. Keeps my “girls” compacted without hardly a bounce, allows me to run with my darling girl, and be able to nurse her when needed- for those runs to the coffee house for a chat which turns into lunch ect…. While my husband has been spending Saturday and Sundays with long Ironman trainings, the BOB has allowed me to take my little one on My own runs where I can run to the gym, swim or do weights while she’s having fun in daycare, and run back home where we stop mid-way to play and snack at the playground. I have to say either a nice jogging stroller, or a bike trailer. A mom on the go always needs nice equipment for when you have a choice of either not exercising or taking the kids along.

LilyPadz! They allowed me to run while nursing and not feel like I was leaving a trail of breastmilk behind…. Also as a combo, sports bras that hold the girls in place…
and I agree with a comment above that says “Coffee”!

The best invention for mothers (and mother runners)…the supportive family and friends who understand why you just need a good run and offer to watch the kids while you’re gone. I couldn’t do it without them.

Wow! So many good comments… wish I had time to skim through them all…

For me, it’d have to be my new iPhone. *Love* all that it can do and that I am both accessible when I am out and that I can call if I would need assistance.

This week I’d have to say the best invention for mothers or mother runners is the locking door. It gets me that 5 minutes of privacy I need to breathe, calm and readjust my attitude for another stint in the trenches. (It’s spring break. Can you tell?) I also could not function as a mother or a runner without coffee.

Best invention has to be the iPhone. I can listen to tunes while running, know I won’t miss a call from school, and hand it over to the 5-year-old when I just need him to go race a car, I mean learn some spelling 🙂

I’d have to agree with the iPhone being one of the best inventions for mothers and mother runners! I love that I can go out for my long run, be available to answer questions for the babysitter, listen to my music and text my husband about picking up more milk on his way to pick up the boys…all on one devise while I’m trotting along!

I hate to be crass, but, probably the best invention for *this* mother runner is–ahem–extra thick, overnight pads. Otherwise known as “Depends.” Without them, I would not be able to run. You don’t hear about too many daddy runners having to worry about this problem after they have kids! By the way, my surgery for stress urinary incontinence is in just a couple of weeks. I’m very excited to get on the road to recovery and then back on the road and running!

I agree with those who have said iPhone — I’ve got my tunes, my Nike GPS+, my connection with friends and family members if they really, really need me. Oh, and I love that there’s a camera on it, too, because I have so much fun snapping “captured on a run” shots, whether scenic, comical or just plain fun in nature.

    Wine. Does that count?

  363. April 7, 2011 3:25 pm

Those are without a doubt the coolest compression tights I have ever seen. Ingenious!

I couldn’t live without my jogging stroller. I have both a single and a double and I use one or the other almost daily. Even if I’m not going out for a run, life with 4 kids means constant movement and my strollers make that much more doable!

I don’t know how I would have completed any 1/2 marathons without a treadmill until my youngest reached 12 years old. It’s hard to put an 8 year old in a jogger stroller because her dad is working a 12 hour shift and I am basically a single mom for days on end. First they don’t fit and second it takes them away from Hannah Montana.

The best invention for the mother who run? well there are the obvious inventions: treadmill, iPhone , podcasts , and the Chariot. These inventions matter. These inventions are life changers. But it’s all moot without the partner who supports the mothers running. I’m not sure if a partner counts as an invention but we all hard to work hard to get good partners. We also have to work hard to buy good inventive products like these niffty compression capris that I’d love to wear these April mornings.

The treadmill and iPhone are two great inventions for mother runners. But nothing beats my supportive husband who will watch the kids while I go out on a long run, or take the kids out to dinner so I can get a run in after work on a nice evening. The other day he watched the kids dance to Just Dance Kids wii (which they love) while I was running in same family room on the treadmill! The entire family is supportive and I am thankful!

Of all the ‘things’ I have used/tried, etc since becoming a mom, my running bra is the best! http://www.fabulousathleticbra.com/ A neighbor who played soccer introduced me to this bra. The company used to be in Idaho and has since moved to Ohio (I think?). I own two bras with the first one I purchased four years ago. There is only one year difference in the bras, but I can’t tell them apart from each other. With this sports bra I can ran ultras and not have to worry about any (bra related) chaffing issues. And I even run with a hydration pack! It is so nice to get in to the shower after a long race and enjoy the warm water, instead of fearing the sting from it!

Does wine count??? For me, the best runner/mother invention is the treadmill. I live in Canada and the weather and darkness is a major issues for over 6 months of the year. My treadmill also allows me to run when I don’t have someone to watch the kids or at the end of a very long day. Treadmill with TV or iPod – PRICELESS.

  377. April 8, 2011 7:40 pm

Well my top 3 would be a sports bra because being that i am a mom and a runner “the girls” don’t stay like they used to so good support is priceless, then the jogging stroller the only way I can get a run in sometimes is early morning after I drop my 3 oldest daughters off , the husband is at work and it’s just me the little one and my lifesaving jogging stroller. and third the treadmill if I can’t get out or make it to the gym i can always fall back on a late night run once the kiddies are in bed.

Greatest mommy invention… the boppy pillow… then the Moby wrap. Two things that make becoming a mom just a little easier so that we can consantrate on things like getting back into shape. 🙂

  379. April 9, 2011 5:42 pm

I’d have to say ziploc bags are the best invention for a runner, whether they have children or not. They hold snacks for my kids and me during a run, can seal up any soiled underpants or pants from an accident when I didn’t run fast enough and keep the ice for my sore muscles when we get home!

I say my super-posh jogging double jogging stroller that I bought at a bargain off Craigslist. I can run on the trail along a highway ( It’s not the same as those quiet wooded trails, but I feel safer) and the boys can watch the big trucks go by. Hand them a snack, a drink, and the portable DVD player for extra-long runs and I can feel good about sharing this love of activity with my children. (Ok, I know the DVD player wrecks it a little, but how long can pre-schoolers be asked to sit still?)

Can I say the girl next door? She started watching my kids a few years ago, very cheaply, so I could go run. At the time, I had a 4 year old, and twin 2.5 year olds, and was losing my mind. I realized that I need to run away for just a bit, then be able to run home again. And so the girl next door saved my life by willing to watch my 3 young kids for an hour, 3 times a week. Best thing ever!

The running stroller. It saved my life when my children were little. So did the nursery at the gym.
