Hump Day Giveaway: Pull the Wool over Your Thighs

April 20, 2011

Get carried away by wool, like Sarah has.

If you’ve read Run Like a Mother, you know I’m a textile-snob when I work out: If it doesn’t wick, I don’t wear it. Cotton fibers haven’t touched my exercising body in nearly two decades. Heck, I even sleep in sweat-wicking jammies!

Yet, we all know the scientific formula: synthetic fibers + sweat = stink. I have a lot of running buddies but, now that I think about it, they often run slightly upwind from me. Happily, I’ve found an alternative to polyester—wool. Before you start scratching and overheating, hear me out. Several companies now make itch-free wool workout wear. One of them, Icebreaker, debuted a complete line of running duds this spring, everything from the expected—capris and tees—to the wow, really!? (sports bra and running skirt). You might recall I raved about the Rush ¾ Tight (aka “capris”) in February on here. I’ve also been getting some good miles in with the Rush Bra, a pullover bra best suited for us A- and B-cup gals. And when (if??) Portland warms up a bit, I’m going to be sporting the sassy Swift Skort.

The SS Rush Crewe (not a typo--must be Kiwi spelling, as Icebreaker is a NZ company) can be one of the tops you choose

In addition to naturally fighting odor, wool is a wonder-fabric because it keeps you warm when it’s chilly, yet somehow also keeps you cooler when temps climb. Like so many of us, I often have to switch right to mom-mode when I return from a run, which means I jockey around thekitchen for 30 or 45 minutes before I can hit the shower. Wearing the wool bra means my tatas don’t turn to ice-pups before I get a chance to change.

Wondering if wool is for you? You can win top-to-toe Icebreaker running gear—your choice of a tank or tee; tights, capris, skort, or shorts; and running socks—simply by telling us: What’s your fabric of choice to wear while running?

P.S. From how do you dress to how ’bout this dress: the random winner of the Nuu-Muu dress is MelindaK., a triathlete (from the sounds of it), whose tagline reminds me of one of my favorite jokes about why the dog licks his…. But, wait, I diverge. Here’s what she wrote:

“Because I can!” I get asked by people all the time, why do you bike? why do you run? why swim? why tri? why not is what i asked them back….i am young, strong and able…..who doesn’t want to live life to the fullest! get out there and do it!

Wool looks fascinating. I’ll run in anything, as long as I can get out of the house. I’d say Lycra on the bottom, white(yeah, I know, can you say pit stains) cotton T on the top.

I like anything “technical” or synthetic I guess. Whatever isn’t cotton! lol! No chaffing please!

I also prefer “technical” clothes from my local running store. I never gave much thought to what the material was. Just checked and it is a lot of polyester. I would LOVE to try the wool. Thanks!!!

I’m a big believer in wool–my year round fave socks are smartwool, for running & everything else too–but so far the rest of my body gets tech fabric of some kind. I’d love to try the Icebreaker tops & skorts for the sticky hot North Carolina summer marathon training! Nothing like a 22 mile run in 99% humidity, 90 degrees…do they make the Icebreaker with an Ice MAKER?

Honestly … I wish I could say I was a textile snob. I am usually digging through a huge basket in the bottom of my poorly lit closet for the three required pieces – bottom, top, and bra. Whatever comes out is usually what I wear (unless of course I grab a skirt and its snowing).

I wear tech fabrics in the winter and summer but sometimes do an ‘old school’ run in cotton in the fall and spring. There is something very nostalgic about running in a loose cotton T with the wind blowing through it! I have just recently have come back to wool – discovered Icebreaker from my best friend and love the softness of it. I only have their underwear now as most of their pieces are investment pieces and I’m building slowly!

    Wonderful giveaway!

Polyester! Isn’t that an odd word to write? Sounds so 70s, but most wicking fabric is indeed that. But seriously, I like the lightest, softest shirts that flutter a bit in the breeze. I’d be interested in trying out the wool–a natural fabric–instead of the plastic, petroleum-based and synthetic.

For a short, easy run I don’t mind cotton – it’s a chance to wear my old race T-shirts somewhere else than to bed! Anything else, it’s wicking (hey, I live in Florida, so we’re talking pretty much year-round). And my Thorlon socks are the only ones that stop my feet from sliding around my running shoes after a few hot, sweaty miles. Sadly, my smartwool socks are worn to shreds, so I’m ready for more wool!

  13. April 20, 2011 4:08 am

I’m with several others–I LOVE Smart Wool socks. I wear ONLY tech materials. I think my favorite shirts are Nike Dri fit–soft & lite. Can’t wait to try Icebreakers–sounds perfect!

I live in south texas…..as in a 4 hr drive south of san antonio. As in, I live 20 minutes from mexico. Not el paso, but the southern tip that touchs the gulf of mexico. That said, it is beyond humid pretty much year round. We have spring and then summer for 3 seasons, with the occasional nippy freeze every few years that lasts for a day or two during our “winter” months. My fave material is ANYTHING moisture wicking. Shoot me if I ever go back to 100% cotton, which may not be necessary because I could just wear it and pass out from the heat.

  18. April 20, 2011 4:55 am

What’s the opposite of a fabric snob? A fabric slu… No, I’m not that. I just don’t look at the tags too carefully. If it looks slippery and slide-y I wear it on my long runs, assuming it’ll wick. If it’s soft and t-shirt-y, I might where it on a short run.

Oh yeah, tech fabrics, head to toe. I love the silky feel of a good wicking shirt (and am intrigued by the PJs you mention in your post!)…I’d live in them, but can’t as I have to save them for my runs. So when NOT running, cotton Ts. But when reaching for running gear, I hear a voice in my head that says “cotton is evil!” (from your book perhaps?)

BTW, may I take this opportunity to rant about races who give out 100% COTTON UNISEX sized shirts? I’m pretty proud of my marathon, but can I wear the shirt? No way – it’s a scratchy stiff cotton (with EMBROIDERY) and a mock neck…and it’s cut for a guy. Le sigh.

Wow, this stuff looks great – and I have to check out the bra, I’m in a desperate quest for new running bras. Love smartwool and synthetics for all purposes. But my new favorite is Capilene (not sure what it is, but it’s synthetic and Patagonia makes stuff with it) – for my recent half marathon in cold temps, I threw Capilene underpants under my Nike capris and discovered they wick more than anything else I’ve found! After the race when I was changing clothes, I noticed that while most of my gear was in some state of wetness (to be expected after a race), my underpants were quite dry. And they’re very soft and comfy, didn’t move at all. Now I have to figure out if I am willing to pay $$ for more of them (this was a pair I’d gotten on clearance long ago) and if they’re still making the same ones!

It seems to be the first time in 15 years of running that the true technically perfect fabric has arrived. My teko, smartwool and icebreaker socks (stole my husband’s teko socks) are on a constant rotation and my one and only wool shirt is worn as often as it is clean through the week. My temp drops like a ton of bricks after a long run in the fall/winter/early spring so it is an easy pick because I too have things to do before a shower – including ice baths which my wool gets me through!! With a toddler in tow, sometimes I have to grab opportunity when it strikes. Yesterday after going to a meeting with the preschool director for next year and having lunch out with my husband, my toddler and I hit the park next door and I ran 3 miles in my jeans. A more prepared runner would have brought or kept a change of running clothes in the car, but I was proud that I remembered to throw on my running socks and shoes and fill the water bottle and chuck the jogger in the car before I dropped my kindergartner off at school with her lunch, folder, library book, and payment for her school pictures. I ran for years in cotton. (I’m old. Did they have “tech” fabrics back then?) Now I usually have some kind of “tech” “wicking” fabric on for tops and shorts/skirts and during fall and winter wool for my socks. I have chafed in just about every kind of fabric and had great results in just about every kind of fabric. I think a lot has to do with conditions that day.

My favorite? Which ever fabric I’m wearing when I cross that finish line is my favorite until the next finish line.

Wow – I feel kind of like a loner after reading everyone else’s comments about cotton! I like the “tech” clothes but don’t the budget for it so I am usually in cotton tees. I did however get some running skirts as a gift and do have a few sports bras that are good so I have a few summer outfits. I’ve been running for 10+ years and I’ve actually never really cared about fabric – shorts & a sports bra is my usually outfit and I am usually always cold so it hasn’t been a problem. But I would love to upgrade if given the opportunity! 🙂

My fav is a running skirt from skirt sports and a drifit tank. Nothing too tight or too loose. I dont want to look like I want attention but I do want to look like I mean business. Top it off with a bondiband and some comfy low socks and I am good to go. I hate being hot so my focus is on cool, breathable clothes. But not short booty shorts and a sports bra. There is breatheable and then there is frightening. 3 kids have disabled my ability to be cool and cool simultaniously.

Hmmm….guess I know brand better than actual fabric! Yes, that’s for environmental reasons: 99% of new clothes are unconscionable to me. Sheepies and bamboo might be the only two I would consider buying new.

Grew up, moved away, earned a little, thought I knew better and ended up running around in uber-techno-syntho-euro gear. It was itchy. It was spendy. And it – frankly – stinks. The decision to try Icebreaker was based in small part on a dim memory of merino just being comfortable, but mainly on nostalgia. And the truth? Running in wool is like being a little kiwi again, acres of golden paddock underfoot and acres of blue sky overhead – fun, just fun! Never too warm, never chilly, never bulky or bobbly or smelly. I rarely run in anything else now (or walk, or bike, or camp, or work or travel….). Wool undercrackers, leggings, tee, and socks are the basics, with onion layers of fleeces, trews, hoodies, gloves and hats adjusted as required. Only shoes and wind- or waterproofs aren’t woolly. I love it.

Growing up I got allergy tested and was told I was allergic to wool- so I shyed away from it for a long time. Then I moved to the Midwest and found out I was allergic to the cold. Tried on smartwool socks and had no issues. I was turned onto icebreaker by the local fleet feet and bought a piece and asked for a few as holiday gifts. I survived winter running nearly hive free! I just started eyeing the new icebreaker line, but for now once it gets warm i’ll be running in all old race t’s (technical) and Nike or C9 target bottoms!

I have wanted to try out the Icebreaker running gear, I bought some of their layers for snowboarding last year and they are amazing. I am wearing half the bulk from before and I am actually warmer. Ever evolving. Started with synthetic wicking materials realizing how much better than cotton it was. Then every year I got a new one from a race series that I do….so because I had so many and I didn’t have to pay for them, they were my favorite!
Then I bought a shirt that is some kind of blend that is so soft. Love it but because it is sleeveless it only comes out for hot weather.
THEN…my husband bought me merino wool long undies for Christmas. I don’t think his intention was that I would wear it everyday. My irst shirt I wore daily to cross country ski, then for the odd run, then just to hang out it. It became a bit of a science experiment. My husband would roll his eyes everyday when I would say, “Smell this! It STILL doesn’t stink!!”
Since then I have gotten a couple more shirt but not any running wear. So….mmmmm….pick me, pick me!?
FYI…i have a laundry soap that is a no rinse wash for delicates that makes wool crazy soft (even softer than Icebreaker already is.) it’s Eucalan (Canadian product).

It saddens me that I can’t experience the Icebreaker socks during my running because I wear Vibram Fivefingers:( But they have been absolutely superb on my tootsies during this past winter in my unheated house (<– the unheated part was our choice partly to stick it to the energy man and see how low we could go before we wussed out, which was never!)

Since I run in Montana, and now Colorado, my gear has to keep me warm 8 months of the year. And it has to help keep me dry (from rain AND sweat) the other 4 months. Finally figured out that the right clothes make running so much more enjoyable when I’m not fretting over the elements. I have some Smartwool items that I really like ( socks and a long sleeve shirt) and never run without. I love all the tech materials, but not the cost. I am always checking the discount racks at running/sporting good stores wherever I go. Needless to say, my outfits never seem to “match” . It definitely makes it easier for my husband and 3 kiddos to pick me out of the pack at races!

I am from Austria and i love to do a lot of mountaineering and running! But I have experienced the negative effects of underware made of cotton, synthetic fibers and all kind of mixed fibers! The main problem with them is, they only keep you warm as long as you are moving and in this case are of no good use for staying warm on the mountains for more than one day! Unsatisfied with my equipment I searched for a solution and found it by wearing icebreaker merino wool underware for keeping me in the right temperature in every situation. There also comes the selfcleaning effect, which saves space and weight in your backpack! But the most important for me is, to know my skin is protected by a natural product!

However due to some gifts cards and a nice resale place I visit when I go to my moms I have a basic wardrobe of(2) wicking capri pants,(2) generic shorts, I try to stick to light weight synthetic fiber tops (unsure if they are supposed to be wicking)- I have (2) short sleeve ones and (2) tank tops. Still haven’t been able to afford synthetic or wicking long sleeve tops so for now during the colder months I got by with some basic long sleeve cotton/jersey type tops.

Being new to running, my running kit it whatever happens to be in my drawer, most often long tights that are flappy around the ankles and cotton tops. I’ve now got a proper running T thanks to the first fun run I ran in last week, and it feels way more comfortable running in that compared to my regular tops! smartwool socks are my go to for both running and everyday. tops and bottoms are usually some wicking synthetic-luon, dry-fit, etc. would love to try a wool shirt!

I love cotton (much less stink than the the tech fabrics) – the wicking from the tech fabrics is nice, but I’m worried I’ll stink away my running buddies and my family!

I’m a rookie runner, in it now for only 8months and have a 5K, 10K, and a MudRun under my belt, and gearing up for a marathon in 23 weeks. At this point, I am still learning about fabrics and why this is great or why that isn’t. Hey-I’m a girl with a fetish for high heels and painted toe-nails. I’m a-learnin’ as I go! So far, I LOVE UnderArmour for the MN winter we just got out of, and their heat shield line seems to be working for me pretty great, too. But, as I live in MN, wool is AWESOME and I never thought of it for working out. Would love to try it!

Wicking fabrics only here too. I haven’t had a problem with stuff getting too stinky, but would love to try wool for something other than socks — wool socks are a must!

I like stretchy capris and an semi fitted t-shirt…either cotton or sweat-wicking synth fabric, but its true, its a constant battle to wash out the sweat. Very frustrating to spend so much money on top of the line running gear only to feel like its wearing out so fast! Wool sounds like a doable alternative, however, I wonder how it would work for me here in Fresno, where it gets above 100 degrees during the summer?

I live in Phoenix, so the less fabric, the better! Anything that wicks is great!

As long as it’s not cotton! Any of the wicking fabrics work for me, I don’t have any wool, other than socks, and would love to try it.

I wear mostly Nike dry fit but also other technical tee’s from races. I discovered the Icebreaker outlet south of Portland and like their wool tops and sock. Haven’t tried their running gear yet.

I’m a fabric novice… I wear tech t’s when I run, but frankly I have no idea what they’re made of! Some of them I love, some I hate, and I rarely get new running apparel so I rarely get to choose what fabric I get. I’d LOVE to try some wool!

I only wear tech fabrics for running. This year for the first time I got wool running socks (Icebreakers) for Christmas from my sister because I kept complaining about cold feet. I love them, they work so well. Would love to try something else wool too!

I also wear all synthetic & love my skirt year round. Would love to try the cute wool one mentioned. It is all a big change from when I first started running 20 years ago (blows my mind to write that) & it is was all cotton Ts & shorts.

I’m a rookie and I still run in blue jeans and cotton t-shirts most of the time. On my feet, though, it has to be wool if I’m wearing socks at all.

Cool Max…does wool work in South Florida in the summer? I’d sure like to find out!

Right now, my fabric of choice is polyester. Not really by choice but by what the stores around here sell.

Normally I go with any wicking synthetics from shirt, sports bra, tank top, shorts, socks, etc., especially my capilene sports bra, which DEFINITELY stinks after awhile or wearing it over and over without washing. It does make sense to wear merino wool for running. I’ve hiked and backpacked in Icebreaker clothing and it works for sure! I couldn’t believe how you really don’t feel over heated even though you are sweating like crazy and wearing wool. If a slight breeze comes through, you still feel warm even though you are drenched. The stink factor is huge too especially when wearing the same shirt for multiple days. Yea, I basically just convinced myself to start wearing merino wool while running..

Wool? Who would have thought? I go for the wicking fabrics. I hate it when my clothes feel “heavy.”

Gotta have a tech shirt on top and spandex on the bottom. After years of running in cotton, I stay away from it now- just too heavy. Love smart wool socks, so a top layer sounds intriguing.

I generally wear synthetic fabrics. For treadmill runs, my capris need to be made of ‘shiny’ material. I’ve had a few too many sweat-soaked-through-see-my-underwear-outline sessions when wearing ‘non-shiny’ fabrics.

I am a hot, sweaty mamma and love my wool socks for running. They keep my tootsies nice and dry and odor free during normal runs and rainy runs. I also love any garment treated with odor protection because my sweat DOES stink! It’s nice to be able to put on running close that smell clean at least in the beginning!

Living in sultry hot Florida, I can only wear technical fabrics, although lately I have noticed that some of my favorite shirts have perma-stink in the pits. I’d love to try wool — sounds like the best of both worlds.

I don’t think I have a fabric of choice. Just wear whatever was on sale. Horrible isn’t it?
