C is for chiseled moms

Cindy
Mother of: 1
My last run was: a sunrise run of 10 miles along the cliffs of Del Mar coast. Our 10-mile Wednesday group normally runs the trails of Rancho Santa Fe, but we opted for the coastal route this week due to “astronomical surf” forecast, which made for excellent scenery.

Running is: my passion.  It’s my job, my hobby, and I love it.  Thomas, my 6-year-old would respond to that statement, “Then why don’t you marry it?”  Hmm…if only.

My last run was: Glorious! Something was unleashed! 5 miles: 1.5-mile warm up, 2 miles at my pre-pregnancy “tempo pace”  and it was comfortable(!!), then 12 strides. I’m on top of the world!

I race because: I’d be running anyway, and once in awhile it’s nice to make it a party with refreshments!

I started running in: August of 2009.  I joined a running group through Title 9 in Portland, Oregon, and we met once a week for about ten weeks, culminating in a 5 mile race the day of the Portland Marathon. I was hooked. I’ve since done a 10K, a 5K, and am training now for my first 15K.  I never would have thought this was possible 6 months ago!

The Susan G Komen Race for the Cure: started it all for me. I ran in honor of my friend who is a survivor.  I loved it and signed up for four more 5ks! I hope to do a 10k next! And, yes I run in basketball shorts…that is my first love!

After having five kids: I found myself with about 50lbs more than I had started with! Over the years, I tried many ways to exercise, but nothing stuck until I went back to running, which I did in high school and college. It took me a while to be able to run very far, but now I am training for my first half marathon.

Running: has helped show my children how I’ve set goals, broken them down, and executed them to the best of my ability.

I run: mostly in charity races so my daughter never has to. I want all these horrible diseases and terrible disasters to be solved so that charity races aren’t necessary anymore.  I want to fix them before they become her problems.

Running is: just a way of life for me.  I ran until I was 35 weeks pregnant and am working back to being an ultrarunner again. Hopefully someday.

I started running: about 20 years ago and ran sporadically after having my first child. Last year, I joined that huge group of running moms–those returning to or getting into it after having kids–and wondered what took me so long.

I love: the feeling of leaving my worries and stress on the road.  I can almost visualize those things just falling behind me.

Mother of: 3 boys
My favorite run: would have to be Boston, hands down. The first year I ran it, my then 5-year-old son was waiting with a sign on Boylston St. cheering and crying because he was so happy to see me. I look forward to the day when my little men can hop out of the (gigantic and heavy) jogging stroller and run beside me!

Mother of: 2 girls
I run: to decrease stress; I run to be healthy; I run so I can eat candy; and I run to be an example for my daughters. I want them to grow up thinking that is what all mothers and women do. I am an orthopedic surgeon and a very busy working mom. I run for me.

After a marriage and two back-to-back pregnancies, my third (marathon) time was a charm. Although race day was unseasonably hot, I finished the full marathon smiling, upright, and  finally feeling as though my life was complete.

Mother of: 4
What I love about running is: that after getting back from a run, my kids greet me like they haven’t seen me in three days, as opposed to 30 minutes!

Cal
Mother of: 5
I actually do love my treadmill because: between my husband’s and my own hectic schedule, I know I can run on it anytime.

Christy
Mother of: 2
Best running compliment ever: was by my running bud while running our first half marathon together. After coaching her to the finish, she said I am “as energizing as a case of Gu and as supportive as your best jogbra!

Christi
Mother of: 2 teenage boys. (“ACK!” she says)
I get my “girl fix” by: coaching a Girls on the Run team at a local elementary school. I started running when I was 40, and now I’m looking forward to my first half marathon.

Courtenay
Mother of: 2 “fabulous *running* daughters”
Running: transformed my life in ways I could have never imagined! It has taught me to push past my self-imposed limitations and always strive to be a little better than I was the day before.

Cathy
Mother of: 2
I started running: for myself, but kept going for my kids. I want to be a healthy and active role model for them.
